People who moved from the Bay...

To people who moved from the Bay Area to San Diego, how has your experience been?

I have a verbal offer from Apple in San Diego, but I’ve been in the negotiation phase for a few weeks now. I’m being downleveled, and if I accept, I’d most likely be taking a pay cut, at least on base pay, which may be a hard pill to swallow at first hoping I'll be better off in the future.

I’m trying to think through both the career and lifestyle side of the move. From what I’ve heard so far:

  • San Diego isn’t much cheaper than the Bay Area -- the nicer apartments I looked at had a monthly rent a bit higher than what I pay now in the South Bay, which was surprising...
  • salaries are generally lower
  • limited job opportunities
  • nature is not as diverse as the Bay Area (more desert-like than redwoods etc)
  • beaches and weather are better, though I’m not sure how hot/humid summers actually feel
  • unsure about how good the social/outdoor scene is (running/biking/sports/kayaking/hiking clubs etc)

For those who made the leap, do you have any regrets? Does the vibe make up for the career and pay hit?

Made it to H1B lottery but switching employers…

I’m currently on TN and was selected in the H-1B lottery this year through my current employer. I also have an offer from a different company, but I haven’t discussed the situation with either employer yet because I’m not sure what the realistic options are. Also I haven’t received an offer in written so it isn’t finalized so don’t want to risk things yet.

If I leave my current employer before October, does that basically mean giving up the H-1B selection? Or is there any path where the new employer can still use/transfer it before it becomes active?

I’ve wanted to work at Apple for a long time, and after interviewing with multiple teams, I finally landed a verbal offer with one of them.

The role is in SD, and the recruiter mentioned a base of around $167K. It’s not finalized yet, but honestly, I was pretty surprised by that number. I currently make more than that in the Bay, and I have a little over 6.5 years of industry experience.

As much as I’ve always wanted to work there, I’m feeling pretty conflicted. It would mean relocating to SoCal and potentially taking a pay cut. I’ve also heard that promotions at Apple can be slow, and that depending on the team, you may end up owning a smaller piece of a much larger puzzle rather than having broad ownership.

I know the brand itself carries a lot of weight, and the work could still be very valuable long term. But I’m trying to be realistic about whether it’s worth taking a step back financially and moving for it.

How good is $500/month with 3K down for a 36 month lease for BMW i4?

I’m debating b/w lucid air (employee) and i4 but at the moment, I’m getting a better deal with i4.

How’s i4 been in terms of the drive, reliability?

This will be my first EV nevertheless.

For air, there’s no down but in looking at just over $600/month

Looking for recommendations for a weekend getaway for a birthday celebration. Ideally, I’m hoping to find a nice hotel, resort, lodge, or cabin that can help arrange simple birthday decor in the room, like balloons, flowers, or a cake.

Preferably somewhere with nature nearby, nice views, and spa options so it feels like a relaxing couple’s getaway. Open to driving a bit farther if the place is worth it.

I went through the full loop and got feedback pretty quickly at each stage, so I wasn’t really expecting ICT3. One wrinkle is that the original team/req may have changed during the process, and I ended up doing an additional round with a new manager/team for fit.

I don’t have the actual numbers yet, but the recruiter asked me to send anything, like my current offer letter or pay stubs or something to make a strong case for Comp Committee, which I will go over with him in a few days. Should I keep any hope at all?

For context, this would also require a Bay Area -> San Diego move, so the level/comp would need to make sense.

Is there any realistic hope of pushing this to ICT4, or should I assume ICT3 is basically locked once they mention it?
