[US] Sold car privately via Facebook and got "scammed" (money is real, buyer wrote down fake info)

Background:

  1. Buyer's name and driver's license number could be fake

  2. Buyer's address is definitely fake because it doesn't exist

  3. Buyer's date of birth is fake (wrote different things on title and Form 5049)

  4. The money is real - paid partly in cash that I deposited at an ATM and partly via Venmo that I withdraw to my bank

  5. The odometer reading on the back of the title is close but may not be exact when sale happened (buyer wrote 150xxx from what I could see and it's 1508xx, but maybe it's just handwriting issues)

#What can we do now to best protect ourselves?

Planning to do this on Monday:

  1. Call and email MO DOR about this (Motor Vehicle Bureau at (573) 526-3669 mvbmail@dor.mo.gov, and also Missouri DOR Compliance and Investigation Bureau (573) 526-5122 cibmail@dor.mo.gov)

  2. Send the title and Form 5049 via certified mail with signature required to MO DOR ASAP with fastest delivery option - there are mismatches in buyer info but it is what it is --> should we attach a cover letter explaining the situation??

  3. Make an official police report to document everything just in case

(Follow-up question:) Honda dealerships - horror stories about Napleton for buying a new vehicle?

Napleton is universally regarded as the worst and to avoid..... but so far they (and Frontenac) are the only ones willing to negotiate the OTD price.

Looking for Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna with ~$35K budget - what makes most sense? (1a) Carvana/CarMax w/ warranty (1b) Certified Pre-Owned (2a) Carvana/CarMax (2b) Used from dealer/private (3) Stretch budget to get new Odyssey

#Main considerations:

  1. Local dealer with a CPO 2024 Odyssey EX-L with 17K miles for $38K, <<- --preferred option if dealer will go down to $36K ish, but they are adamant on the price and gave me a really bad vibe when I asked if there was room in the price given that a dealer 4hrs away has a similar car for much less money. They literally said I should go buy that car insead in a rude manner.

  2. Dealer 4hrs away with a CPO 2024 Odyssey EX-L with 33K mles for $34K, <<-- problem with this is logistics with travel and getting the car checked out by my mechanic

  3. Carvana/Carmax Hondas and Siennas with various year/trim/odometer combos for $25K-$30K

  4. Other local dealers who have Odysseys and Siennas that are used but not CPO for $30K ish or lower if we go back years or high on odometers

  5. Private sellers haven't had much luck here so far in terms of clean titles and no accidents and year/odometer preferences

#Questions:

  1. Is the CPO actully worth a premium? Or is it just a gimmick and if I do need the warranty Honda/dealership will give me legalese and I'm SOL?

  2. Is it worth it to buy warranty from Carvana/Carmax on a used car so that it's "like a CPO"?

  3. Hondas will need a timing belt change at ~90K miles which is a $2000 cost, but AFAIK Siennas don't - so is it better to target a Sienna even if it is a little older or has higher odometer? How far back can I safely go for a Sienna XLE? 2017-18 for reliability for the next couple years assuming odometer is under 80K?

  4. Lastly, a brand new Honda Odyssey EX-L is $42K and while that's beyond our budget, it's only a little bit higher than the CPO at the local dealer.

[USA-MO] Buying CPO Honda Odyssey with excellent credit (770-809 FICO) and flexible with upfront cash and yet the best rate I'm getting is 5.69%?

I understand that rates in general are high right now - and especially for used cars - but is there something I can do to get a better APR than 5.69% that a local credit union is offering me?

I submitted info to a bunch of them today and only one of them had a result (it said "I'm pre-qualified for 5.69%" for 36mo and the % goes higher as I go up to 48/60/66/62/84 mo term) and others all said they will get back to me in 2 business days.

Should I try asking the dealership to shop rates for me?

Am I missing something that can help me get a better APR? I have an okay job that pays close to six figures before bonus and 100% credit payment history (although I have a bunch of hard pulls on my credit files thanks to light /r/churning, something like 2 personal cards and 2 business cards per year at most over the last few years)

Location: Missouri. Ameren (electric company) "trimmed" down our giant Maple tree and now its branches are drooping/breaking/falling. Do we have a case against them?

Or are we going to have to spend money to take the tree down?

They've trimmed all the trees that are near power lines often in the past, but this last time they were extremely aggressive/negligent and totally destroyed multiple trees in our neighborhood by "trimming" them so much they'll all likely die off soon.

Need a car - risk private sale or local used car shops OR go with CarMax/Carvana/dealerships through Costco?

BUdget: $18K ish and need a car/van that has 3rd row seats and ample trunk space.

Coming from a 20yr old Honda Odyssey that needs $2000+ in repairs (air conditioning compressor). We do 2-3 roadtrips per year and 3-4 family visits per year so the 3rd row is quite handy.

Follow-up - whether to buy a Walmart 'managed' Pixel 8a

Seller says that the phone gets a notification saying managed by Walmart and will be resetting soon, but the IMEI comes out clean when I checked on TMobile/Visible/AT&T/Mint.

What could "Walmart software" be that's installed on a Pixel 8a? Seller says they can't uninstall it and are selling for parts for that reason

Trying to figure out whether to buy a Pixel 8a that's listed "for parts due to software issues" for $70 on Marketplace. Assuming the IMEI is clean, what else could the software issue be? Seller says

Does that mean it's likely a stolen phone from a Walmart employee?
