Unpopular Opinion: Heroine by Thornhill (2022) was an absolute masterpiece and very overhated
I saw Thornhill play live in CLT last night and was pleasantly surprised to hear them play more tracks off Heroine than usual, giving us Hollywood, Arkangel, Casanova, and BLUE VELVET for the first time that I know of. I've been to 3 of their shows since 2024 and have only ever heard them play Arkangel & Casanova off it before, and mainly focus on The Dark Pool (also a 10/10) and BODIES. Each concert I've been to with them has been better than the last, and considering how insanely good 156/Silence was before them, I was worried they may be outshined as the headliner, but they both played incredibly well back to back. Thornhill made slight tweaks in the vocals & mixing on most of their songs, especially those off Heroine, and it was borderline euphoric.
But after hearing the best 4:50 I've experienced in my life in what sounded like a subtly remixed version of Blue Velvet, I thought back to when Heroine was first released, and the general "meh" reaction on this sub. I agree - Heroine is not pure metalcore like The Dark Pool by any means, but it aged like fine wine and was a masterpiece in itself, transcending a box the majority of artists fit in and creating something incredibly refreshing and original. It, like The Dark Pool and BODIES, is a solid playthrough start to finish. For some reason it reminds me of NIN & Deftones.
Anyways, I understand music taste is subjective, but I feel like a lot of people underappreciated Heroine for the album it was because of how good of a metalcore album TDP was. I'd say this probably isn't the sub to make this argument in, but anyone outside of metalcore isn't even going to know who Thornhill is...yet. But if it gets more popular, maybe next show we will get Hellfire Club 🙏
