should we move to save on commuting?

our lease ends in february, will then be two years in this rental.

upside: spacious, close to amenities, affordable, neighbours practically nonexistent, no landlord/REA disturbances.

downside: it’s a 40 minute commute each way to my husband’s work, to my work, and to my uni. i WFH 1-2 days a week, uni 2 days a week, but husband is a barber. public transport is difficult as multiple changeovers would be needed and would take 3x the time which isn’t feasible for us.

we’re considering moving somewhere more central where commute will reduce by half for literally everywhere. our works, my uni, the city, to beaches etc.

we have family and friends that can help with the moving and provide transport, so removalists or truck rentals won’t be necessary. no kids or pets either, just husband and i.

we’ll most likely be moving into a smaller, older house at either the same or slightly higher price, just based on our budget.

tbh i’m mostly worried about costs. we can’t really afford thousands to move. but unsure if that’s even a factor to be considered since we don’t need removalists.

is it worth it? what would you do?

TLDR: current rental is great except it’s super far from everything. move would be easy with family + friends help. would be downgrading, so unsure if it’s the right move.

street parking bundoora

i’m seriously desperate. im only 2 weeks in and i cant pay close to $20 each week on parking in the white bays. public transport isn’t an option for me either due to me living quite far.

if anyone could give me the name of streets that have free parking, i’d be SO grateful. feel free to dm me if you don’t want to publicly share.

Anyone ever quit APS and come back years later?

I’m a casual while studying at uni. Have had plenty of opportunities to go full time but haven’t as it would’ve been impossible to manage while being a student. Obviously planning to quit APS once I finish my degree and go into my field.

After having a conversation with my husband the other day, he asked me why I would work something (in my field) that is a clearly large paycut from what I could earn as an APS FT employee. For me, it comes down to my values and how I want to spend my time.

But if the future takes a different turn and I want to go back to APS, would it be a kind of easier process as I’ve worked in it before? Anyone ever gone through that kind of situation before?

Do you have to apply again while in a merit pool?

Apologies if this has been asked before, I wasn’t able to find a direct answer.

But if someone was put into the merit pool a month ago and a position has opened again for the same job you got put into the merit pool for, do you apply again? Or just leave it and hope to get a call?

pre-placement requirements

Hey everyone, I’m a new student set to start my MTeach next sem. I received an email on Wednesday 6th advising me that pre-placement requirements are due on the 10th.

Immediately, I completed the student deed, already had a WWCC so I uploaded that (it’s been verified) and I completed the Child Safety & Wellbeing module. I also completed the other little stuff such as updating info, school contacts, etc. The thing I’m worried about is that it’s due today/tonight and the deed and module still haven’t shown up as verified in InPlace. I know it takes 3 business days but I’m worried that even though I completed it before the due date, it hasn’t been verified yet so it will affect my placement.

Does anyone have any experience with this and can ease my concerns? Do I have anything to worry about or should I contact someone?

Kind of bizarre they’d send that email 4 days before due date, and what if I wasn’t enrolled in the placement unit yet? Idk, I’m just stressed lol.
