If you formerly or currently are in a composition degree program as a Black student, how is your experience?

Being in the classical music space as a POC can be isolating, exhausting, and at worst, dangerous. Colleges are where the social rules of the music industry begin to brew. For many earning their college degree is one of the most challenging and fulfilling times of their lives. However being a black student in a potentially mostly white space can greatly warp the experience. We want to hear your favorite memories, your horror stories and everything in between about your degree earning experience.

Introduce yourself!!!! (Introductions and Goals of the Community)

Hi All! My name is Tanasia. I am a recent college grad with a bachelor's degree in Music Composition. During my college journey I was often the only black person in the room. I think that is a common occurrence in the classical space, especially if you are a creator of music rather than a performer. After that experience I really longed for a sense of community where I could comfortably be myself with people who understood what it was like to exist in two worlds that at times seem to contradict.

My hope for this reddit page is to create a space where Black music creators can have somewhere to joyously integrate their black culture and their love of creating music. While the word composer usually refers to the classical world, I recognize that most musicians are not one sided and enjoy creating music of all kinds. That is why I want to emphasize that this community is open to any kind of music! My personal musical inspiration is Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange). I feel he understands being a multi-faceted musician the best.

if interested, some of my music can be found here: https://youtube.com/@yeahilistentoeverything?si=zYoZ6ubcsvUkSb8G

Please feel free to introduce yourself, share who your musical inspirations are, share some of your work, and share some of your experiences as a Black composer!

IT'S GREAT TO MEET YOU!
