What do you mean I can’t keep Dojo Loaches?! 😭

I am beyond CRUSHED! Dojo Loaches are my dream fish and I’ve only just realised they’re not legal in Australia.

I’m just a girl that wants to keep some freaks ha.
First it was African Dwarf Frogs… illegal. Next Pac Man Frog… also illegal and now Dojos.

Please drop you goofy noodles below because apparently this is as close as I’m getting and I need some cheering up ☹️

Update! Against all odds, I have two (not small anymore) babies!!

A month and a half ago, I posted asking about the chances of getting fry from my actively breeding rasboras. At the time, I had one tiny fry that was quickly eaten but a couple of days later I spotted a couple more.
Fast forward a month and a half and I think I can safely call it. I now have two more additions to the mixed bag school!

I know two fry might seem a little ridiculous to celebrate but considering my pH is higher than ideal for successful rasbora breeding, I’m feeling incredibly lucky and honestly so proud that my tank was able to support them and grow them this far.

Now for the real question… what babies do I actually have?! The current school of 14 were sold to me as harlequins but I think I may have a mixed bag of lambchops, harlequins and purple harlequins 😅

When your mystery snail has main character energy!

Was just trying to film the aggressive booty shake when of course my mystery snail had to be the star of the show!

Unusual Bladder Snail?

This is by far my favourite (not so little) hitchhiker! I haven’t seen another quite like her. Dark body, frosty shell and she’s grown quite large. She’s got mystery snail personality in a bladder snails body. I love her!

Setting up a new tank for a future Clown Pleco. Enough hiding spots?

In the very early stages of setting a new tank and planning to add a single Clown Pleco as part of a community with Corydora, Rasbora and Shrimp. Trying to create the best home I can before I start cycling the tank.

The driftwood pictured is made up of three pieces, so I can still change the layout if needed. There’s quite few tunnels/ crevices/ hides throughout but I’d love some options from people who keep Clown Plecos.

Enough natural cover in this wood? add more? Keep playing around with the layout?

I’ll be adding sand and plants. I’ve got a preference for blackwater style tanks so lots of leaf litter and botanicals as well.

Thanks in advance!

Stocking Ideas - 120L

I’m picking this tank up on the weekend and thought it’d be fun to see what everyone would stock if it was theirs.

Dimensions:
59.5 cm (W)
44.5 cm (D)
46.5 cm (H)
Works out to about 123L (32 US gal).

At the moment I’ve got:
• A community tank with Leopard Kuhli Loaches,
Harlequin Rasboras, Neocaridina shrimp and Mystery
Snails
• A wild Betta smaragdina ‘Copper Guitar’ blackwater
tank
• A Half Moon Betta tank

I’d like this one to be something a bit different rather than just another version of my current community.
I love blackwater tanks and natural, botanical heavy scapes. My tap water is pretty hard, so I’m thinking this might finally be the excuse to invest in an RO unit and do a proper blackwater setup.

I’ve been tossing around the idea of an Apistogramma community but I’m definitely open to other ideas.

What would you stock in this tank? Any species you’d recommend (or avoid) with the 60 cm footprint?

Would love to hear some ideas!

Something about this scape feels off to me… or am I overthinking it.

I’ve been slowly putting together my Copper Guitar Betta* Smaragdina (Grumpy Gus)* **tank over the last 6 months and Gus has been living in it for almost a month now. He seems incredibly happy and uses every inch of the tank.

That said, something about the scape still feels unfinished to me and I can’t quite put my finger on it. I think it might be the empty space in the middle/right of centre. There’s some Crypt Mi Oya back there that’s just starting to establish, so I know it’ll fill in over time but I’m wondering if it still needs a bit more vertical structure.

One thing that doesn’t really come across in the photos is that all of the driftwood is raised rather than sitting flat on the substrate**.** The main piece through the centre forms an arch and the driftwood on the right is perched on a stone. That creates heaps of natural tunnels, crevices and shaded hiding spots underneath and Gus spends a lot of time weaving through them.

My thoughts are:
Add a few more branchy sticks for some extra height and to tie the hardscape together.
Add another larger plant (maybe an Anubias) around the centre right.
Or both…

The goal has always been a messy natural looking blackwater inspired tank rather than a perfectly manicured aquascape. Maybe it’s just starting to look a little too “clean”. The mini ramshorns really did a number on my frogbit roots, so that definitely hasn’t helped. Thankfully Gus has decided ramshorns are a tasty snack now!

It definitely needs a tannin and botanical top up and it’s also water change day, so I know the water level is a little low.

So what would you do? More sticks? More plants? Both? Or am I just staring at it for too long and inventing problems?

Pangio Appreciation Post

I’ve lurked this sub for a long time, slowly learning and planning out this community tank. The goal was always to build a tank around kuhli loaches and I think I’ve finally achieved it.

I got my 10 leopard noodles a week ago and I was honestly worried I’d add them to the tank and never see them again. That definitely hasn’t been the case!

The Noodle Council is confident and out and about all the time! They’re constantly weaving through the driftwood, peeking out from under leaves or just lounging in the open. Finding a random little head poking out from somewhere unexpected genuinely makes me laugh out loud every time. I honestly adore these weird little fish more than I ever expected.

Thank you to this community. I’ve learned so much just by lurking here over the past few months. Reading everyone’s advice and seeing your tanks gave me the confidence to finally build my own.

From a depressed gal who’s been trying to rebuild her life one fish tank at a time… thank you!

Harlequin Breeding - Any chance fry will survive naturally?

My harlequins have been going through a breeding/mating frenzy over the last few days.

By absolute chance I managed to find a tiny fry!

After finding the fry and sitting back and watch the tank, I caught one of the females hanging upside down under a leaf. Managed to find eggs attached to the underside.

I’m curious what the chances are of any making it to adulthood naturally in a community tank?
Current tank mates are:
Harlequin rasboras
Leopard kuhli loaches
Mystery snails

The tank is heavily planted with plenty of cover but I’m assuming most eggs and fry will end up as snacks. Has anyone had harlequins successfully raise a few babies in a community setup without intervention or is it incredibly rare?
