My EMR course at Columbia starts in a week. Slightly nervous, any final advice?

I'm a life guard so I have a (very slight) background in medical but I want to make sure I am setting myself up for success.

I've done all the prereading but I'm going to go back this week and review it one more time. I've also made some google docs on the drug monographs with onset, indications, contractions, and cautions and dosages.

Is there anything else I'm missing? I just really don't wanna fail and have to pay and do it again, trying to jump into licensing ASAP. Overall I'm eager to get out into the field before PCP school. Any advice or notes you have left over would be absolutely invaluable. Thanks :)

EMR Learning Credit Suggestions

Hey everyone,

I obtained my EMR license earlier this year and am planning to start achieving my learning credits needed to stay certified.

Any suggestions on what courses to take? The list is huge and I want to take something that is beneficial while also achieving those credits!

Thank you so much!

Rural EMR questions

Hi everybody I am planning to get my EMR/Class4 license to work rural/remote EMR and I have a couple questions.

So currently I am in undergrad out of province and I was wondering about the feasibility of working as an EMR during undergrad. I am wondering how the education leave works. By the time that I am fully certified I would only have one last semester of school left. Would I be able to work EMR from May-December, then take education leave to finish my last semester and come back the following May?

I also might be able to get certified a year earlier depending on scheduling. In that case I would have 3 semesters of school left, would BCEHS allow me to work one summer May to Aug (2027),then take education leave until the following May-Dec(2028). then finish my undergraduate to return the following summer (2029)?

Given that I work rural/remote EMR as a casual would I generally be able to get enough shifts for full time, and would I have overtime opportunities aswell?

If I go through with this how would accommodation work? I am planning to commute from Vancouver. From my understanding UC’s would generally shift commuting EMRs with multiple shifts back to back. Is that correct? And between back to back shifts would I be able to stay at the station. Also how would the on call shifts work accommodation wise.

What are the best rural/remote EMR stations for high call volume, and closest commute from Vancouver?

Thanks everybody so much for your help, this is a career that I am really interested in and would love to be able to work and gain experience/seniority while I wrap up my undergraduate degree.

Best locations to accumulate hours/seniority/experience as a new PCP hire?

Planning to do my EMR and PCP next year and am hoping to get hired with BCEHS. Just wondering if anyone can give any insight into best strategies for both working lots of hours as well as gaining seniority/experience as a new hire. Got a lot of debt to pay off and dependents to support so would like to hit the ground running as much as possible.

I know a lot of it is likely just doing the time and being patient until you've been around the block a few times, but are there any locations in particular that might help to apply for? Seems like there's a push to hire more PCP's in some of the more rural areas in BC, but I'm wondering if that wouldn't also come with the drawback of working less hours since there may not be as many calls in smaller centers.

Really appreciate any advice.

Med administration requirements.

I'm studying for my EMR licensing exam and my classmates and I can't come to an agreement on what info you're required to get before administering medications. Help?

ASA we agree you can give without vitals, (just ruling out contraindications)

But all other meds. What is required? Vitals? Sample? OPQRST (if applicable)?

Are any meds different? Like EPI, for example, where it's obviously something we're going to want to give asap.

We can't find the hard and fast rules for this anywhere.

Emr licencing exam vernon vs victoria

Just curious what people who have experience taking the exams think. Ive heard vernon exams tend to be harder? Is that just hearsay or does anyone have anything they can share.

Also looking for more prep materials and tips and tricks for my first attempt at licencing.

Thanks in advance

License continuing competence

I am currently not working as an emr and I know I need to take courses in order to keep my license valid. Where do I find a list of courses I can take ? Are there any free ones as well ?

Is there a specific website or link I can access with all the courses available ?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated :) 😀
