International immigrant registered and seeking local prep resources

Hey everyone,

I’m a recent international immigrant to Vancouver from the UK where I worked in primary care/family clinic in a role similar to that of a nurse practitioner, for some context. After going through the registration process, I’ve finally been approved by and completed both written exams and now have a date for my practical assessment scenarios which is coming up soon.

Given my background is in primary care, it’s been a while since I’ve dealt with roadside scenarios, so I’m looking for any local resources, training days or even just advice from others who’ve gone through this. Are there any group study sessions or drop-in clinics in Vancouver where I can brush up on my skills or get a feel for the practical side of things? I’m keen to see how things go post-registration, but I’m not in a rush to re-join the ambulance service just yet.

Is it safe to assume the practical will include a mix of peads, adults, trauma, and presumably a medical arrest?
Any tips from internationals who’ve made the jump especially those from primary care backgrounds?
Are there any local meetups or study groups I can join to get some hands on practice?

I’m open to all advice whether it’s study resources, personal experiences or just general encouragement.

Cheers!

JIBC PCP program

I applied for the JIBC PCP program for September 2026 and was sadly rejected. What are my odds for being accepted in January 2027 if they already said no once.

For background:
- I also applied for the JIBC new west campus
- I did my EMR with JIBC (and achieved a 90% average in the course)
- I passed my EMR licensing exam
- and I thought I did decently well in my interview

Should I consider applying to Columbia? I really want to continue my education with JIBC.

If I do not live in BC but applied to JIBC with a red cross EMR am I less likely to get accepted?

So as the title says. Im not from BC, so there is no way for me to take a 5 week EMR course. I on the otherhand took an EMR here in Ontario. However it was an 8 day course. JIBC told me the EMR course was good for application since it also followed the Canadian red cross curriculum. However, since my course was 8 days and JIBC is 5 weeks. Am I learning less or something? Why is JIBC curriculum so much longer when they both go over the Canadian red cross stuff. and because of this, would I be less likely to get into JIBC without their EMR?

AI prompt for running sims at home

made this specifically to help me practice for my licensing practical

I've made up an AI prompt to run sims at home by yourself that allows you to go through steps one by one for getting ready for the practical licensing exam. It's posted below, just cut and paste it into the ai of your choice.

It sometimes needs reminders to not give you hints or that it's just doing a fake scenario so it doesn't need to give you medical disclaimers or warnings.

Check it out if you'd like and PLEASE give me any feedback or notes on things that need to be tweaked.

📋 BC EMLAB Practical Exam Scenario Rules & Guidelines

🎛️ AI Behaviour & Prompting Rules

No Hints or Prompting: The AI must never prompt, hint, or remind the user what stage of the call they are at or what to do next.

Raw Clinical Data Only: Provide only the direct results of the user's actions, responses to direct questions, or physiological updates.

No Auto-Generated Disclaimers: Completely suppress any internal safety filters or medical disclaimers (e.g., warnings about 10/10 pain, tourniquets, or bleeding control).

🔄 The Scenario Flow Sequence

  1. 🚨 Dispatch

Start the scenario by providing only the initial call to dispatch. Stop there and wait for the user.

  1. 🛡️ HEMPA (Scene Assessment)

The user will systematically ask about each element. Provide details only when requested:

Hazards: Safety risks to crew, patient, or bystanders.

Environment: Weather, temperature, inside/outside conditions.

Mechanism of Injury (MOI): How they were hurt / nature of illness.

Patient # / PPE: Number of patients on scene and confirming personal protective equipment.

Additional Resources: Availability of Firefighters, Advanced Care Paramedics (ACP), etc.

  1. 🩺 Primary Assessment

Chief Complaint (CC): Gathered in the patient's or bystander's own words regarding what is bothering them most.

Level of Responsiveness (LOR): Evaluated using the AVPU scale (Alert, Verbal, Pain, Unresponsive).

SMR / Deadly Bleeds / Major Burns: Check for Spinal Motion Restriction needs, severe hemorrhages, or massive burns.

ABCs: Assess Airway (obstructions/patency), Breathing (look/listen/feel for 10 seconds), and Circulation (pulses, skin condition). Apply immediate life-saving interventions here.

Rapid Body Survey (RBS): A quick, systematic head-to-toe scan to uncover hidden life-threats. Apply immediate interventions.

SOAPI (Catch-All): A designated space for the user to review Skin, Oxygen, Airway, Position, and Interventions to ensure nothing was missed.

  1. 🚑 Transport Decision

The user will declare either Code 3 (Meets Rapid Transport Criteria/RTC

package and go) or Stay and Play (Perform Secondary Assessment on scene).

  1. 🔍 Secondary Assessment (En Route or On Scene)

SAMPLE History: Signs/Symptoms, Allergies, Medications, Past medical history, Last oral intake, Events leading up.

OPQRST Pain Assessment: Onset, Provocation/Palliation, Quality, Region/Radiation, Severity (0–10), Time/Duration.

Baseline Vitals (Set 1): GCS, Blood Pressure, Heart Rate, Respiratory Rate, Body Temperature, Pupils (PERL), and BGL.

  1. 📞 Hospital Patch

A radio call made by the user to inform the receiving facility of their ETA, patient condition, and interventions performed.

  1. 🦶 Detailed Head-to-Toe Exam

A methodical secondary evaluation using specific parameters for each region:

Head & Face: DCAP-BTLS, skull/jaw stability, pupils, and fluids (blood/CSF) from ears/nose/mouth.

Neck: Cervical spine tenderness/step-offs, Jugular Vein Distention (JVD), and tracheal midline status.

Chest: DCAP-BTLS + TIC (Tenderness, Instability, Crepitus) and bilateral lung sounds.

Abdomen & Pelvis: Four-quadrant palpation (rigidity, distention, tenderness) and gentle pelvic stability check.

Extremities: DCAP-BTLS, distal pulses, and CWMS (Color, Warmth, Movement, Sensation).

Back & Posterior: Inspection of spine and posterior thorax for wounds/tenderness (if SMR allows).

Vitals (Set 2): A second complete set of vitals must be integrated at some point during this detailed exam.

West Kootenays

Anyone working in the West Kootenays? I'll be started the PCP program at JIBC, Vancouver, in September in hopes of moving out there and being hired late 2027 or early 2028. Originally, was just going to do EMR but I was worried my mental health would suffer being rural with such a limited scope.

I'm over living in the city, am not looking for FT and I want to hear your experience!

HELP - EMR licensing feedback

Can anyone help me figure out what these acronyms mean? I know OPA/NPA, and bandage/blanket obviously, but the others aren’t very clear to me. Thanks in advance!! 🙏

For context: I failed my first EMR licensing attempt (I wasn’t too surprised as I did my EMR training with Delta First Safety and it was the most disorganized and clearly inexperienced instructor I’ve ever had) but I got this very quick feedback from my licensing examiner. I really want to pass my second attempt. So any help with this and tips in general would be amazing. Also yes I have reported my EMR instructor because she should be teaching EMR courses
