Minnesota Boundary Waters could become toxic due to new GOP-backed mining project

The pristine Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness could see toxic impacts if a mining project proposed by a Chilean company with a lengthy history of pollution moves forward.

Fishing Rod Tube

What do you guys use for protecting rods/reels while not in use? I’ve got 2x 2pc 6’ rods I want to bring but also protect, the longest pieces are 44”.

Best thing I’ve found is the Flambeau Bazuka case, but I’m worried it’s too heavy and meant for flying more than camping?

PermitPulse is now live on Google Play

I got tired of constantly refreshing recreation.gov every day looking to see if the BWCA permit I wanted had opened up, so I made an app. PermitPulse let's you enter a entry point and an upto 5-day window and will notify you within 5 minutes of a permit becoming available.

The first watch is free, and additional watches are $1 each. I know there are a few other sites that do this, but I found them either hard to use or more expensive than I wanted. I’m mainly trying to keep this simple and cheap while covering server costs; no ads or subscriptions.

Side note: I do plan on bringing this to iOS shortly, so keep an eye out. After that, I plan on opening up other recreation.gov managed sites, so if you have a request on what to do next, I'd love to hear it. I already have one for Rocky Mountain National Park.

RABC and all

Howdy, going into Mudro and LBF soon and want to know about using the Canadian side. Our group has Ontario fishing licenses purchased - do we need to figure out this RABC thing or somehow check into a ranger station to fish from the Canadian side or paddle?

There is a lot of conflicting information, and emails to Ontario Govt have not been returned so far. Thanks

Thoughts, considerations, or Warnings for hiking in the BWCA.

Will be entering through little souix (ep 14) June 3rd, about 5 days with a buddy.

Primarily fishing and camping but would also like to do some hiking/exploring. What I’m not sure is what I need to think about when starting a hike off of or not on a known trail. Is the forest so dense that losing bearings can be a real thing, or dangerous thing?

Any tips, thoughts, or words of caution appreciated.

Entry Point 16- Moose/Portage River

I was wondering if anyone has used entry point 16 before and what I was like for them. I have a permit for July and am wanting to know what it is like to take the river to Lake Agnes. Satellite imagery shows what look like beaver dams on the river and wondering if that is accurate to what is actually there.

Cots yay or nay?

Looking to go up here in july canoeing in from fall lake entry to basswood.

I am getting a few practice trips in with my gear. Would cots be too much? Most of my canoe camping has been on rivers with little to no portage so idk if cots will be too much or too heavy

Lake Trout Mid July

Headed out on Knife for my first time in early July. I've never caught a Lake Trout and hope to do so. Been reading about baits. Several mentions of purple tail dancers and blue and silver spoons. Any tips or advise is HUGELY appreciated!

Mystery Animal in water (Lower Basswood)

This weekend we were staying in Lower Basswood falls and we saw a mystery animal out in the water. We were all confused in what this animal was.

What do you think?

Which of these will keep your feet warmest? Settle the debate!

Which of these options would keep your feet warmest while sitting in a canoe on a cold windy day:

  1. Mostly dry bare feet in quick dry sandals

  2. Very wet wool socks in quick dry sandals

  3. Very wet wool socks in very wet cotton tennis shoes

Isle Royale > BWCA > Voyageurs Itinerary

How many days duration would make a trip of all 3 areas feasible?

How many days would you give each area?

I want be realistic and not overfill an itinerary. For a 33YO couple who are intermediate outdoorsman, if that matters. Planning for sometime this summer. Ideally we want to do some overnight paddling plus backpacking or day hikes. Any insight on pitfalls, issues, or tips when planning would be greatly appreciated!

Climbing on Sea Gull Lake

I'm trying to go climbing on Sea Gull Lake. There's a mountain project page for it, but it doesn't have a bunch of details. I'm only planning on doing TR.

If anyone has climbed there before would love some input.

Do you think 30m is enough static rope? Any other protection suggestions?

Will it be safe or ethical to climb after rain?

Is there anything else I should be aware of?

Stashing Vehicles

Good morning!

We have our first trip booked for EP 84 Snake River.

Would it be acceptable to leave a car at EP 33 Little Gabbro for our exit? Or is potentially clogging up a parking bad etiquette?

The initial plan was to do an in-and-out at EP84, but we could see a couple more lakes if we left our vehicle at EP33 and shuttled to EP84 from the outfitter.

Thanks!

Single Kayak vs Tandem Canoe Speed

Have an odd number group this year and don’t really want to do a 3 man canoe. Been thinking about buying a kayak lately anyway before this issue came up. I’m not really looking to debate the various pros/cons of each, just wanting some opinions (facts?) about if a single kayak (this might be a large variable but) say 50 lb plastic 10’ or otherwise with that persons camping gear on it can keep up on the water with a Kevlar tandem canoe with 2 people’s gear plus the food pack (assume one of the canoes will carry kayakers food).

Does anyone have a Cooke Custom Sewing silicone bug shelter tarp?

I've heard good things but I cant find many photos or videos outside of their website.

They're very expensive so I want to make sure it's the correct product for me.

Seems like the Nemo Bugout 9x9 (discontinued but maybe I can find it used) is quite a bit lighter than the 10x10 1.9oz CCS shelter.

My main question is how small they pack down? Either the 1.9oz or 1.1 oz, do they pack down smaller than the Bugout?

Going to try wet footing it. I was debating between some socks with some trail running shoes, but after loads of research I’m going with some lightweight boots that are hopefully quick drying (as far as boots can be) paired with some Darn Tough wool socks. I’ve read some portage reports (thanks Paddle Planner) and some have “boot sucking mud” which made me decide on these. Made by Nortiv 8. Cheaper($70 w/shipping) I wanted something TIED to my foot and tied well. I’m also carrying a pair of crocs with me should it be warm enough and I wanted something TIED out of wet feet. Also a pair of camp shoes. That’s three total pairs. I’m sure I’m WAY over doing it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

What’s on your feet in Early June??

EDIT: I am taking feedback into consideration. Specifically the comment about perhaps retaining too much water being a weather resistant boot. After some thought, I think I will drill smaller holes into the soles (boots have removable insoles) and perhaps melt some relief points in the Cordura nylon. Not terribly expensive so I’ll see what can be done.

Edit #2: Provided water temps first week of June, adding neoprene socks.

Anyone tried them? The 14L grizzly sack by Adotec is certified bear resistant (like Ursack), weighs 199 grams. It's basically a thick dyneema rolltop bag. Ursack weighs in at 249 grams.

Of course it costs more than an Ursack, but not that much. I've gone in the direction of bear resistant bags over BV450's, I think overall it can be lighter.

Adotec has larger bags, but only the 14L is certified at this time. Rangers have def stopped me in the BW and enquired about my bear-resistant systems.

Oh, by the way, make sure not to stumble and fall into the STAUBER if you get up at night to take a leak.

Now about those bear bags - anyone tried one?

Adotec is a tiny company run by a Canadian couple. I love supporting such a venture.
