Moving to Bath - rent question

I'm moving to Bath soon so I've started looking on apps/FB groups. Unfortunately I mostly see student sharing houses and via agencies. I have pets so I think my best options will be without agencies and no sharing, like a 1 bedroom (outside the city? Given the pets). Is there any app you'd recommend for that? On spareroom it's mostly student sharing and on rightmove is mostly via agencies. I would appreciate any help, thanks.

Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

Spots with a lot of ants close to town centre?

Bit of an odd question, I know. I got into ant keeping and with mating season having begun, I'm looking for convenient spot to catch a queen. Does anybody know any place not too far from town centre with large, active populations of ants?

Anyone know what's going on with the new shop at Westgate Buildings?

Can't remember the name, but it sells vapes and online TikTok trend type tat. It's in the old Maplins shop, next to Tesco. It's been closed for a while now but it had not long opened. These kind of shops often hit problems but if it's hit the wall already I think it might be a new speed record.

Anyone recognise this guy?

He emergency braked in front of me yesterday on Lower Bristol Road, before jumping out his car and attacking a pedestrian on the pavement. Unfortunately I didn’t get footage of the attack, only him running stopping in the middle of the road, running out of shot and shouting at someone. Anything I can do to report him?

3 nights in bath

Hi everyone! 👋

My friends and I are staying in Bath for 3 nights and we’ll have a car. After Bath we’re heading down to Dorset, so we’re trying to make the most of the surrounding area before continuing on.

So far we have:

Stonehenge (already stopping there on the drive to Bath)
Castle Combe
Salisbury

We’d love any recommendations for other places worth visiting as day trips from Bath before heading to Dorset. Hidden gems are definitely welcome!

Also, how long would you recommend spending in the New Forest? Is it worth a drive through: half day or just a few hours.

Thanks so much !!

Free Libraries/Take a Book/Leave a Book

Anyone know of any spots for leaving books in terms of free Libraries or things like that?

I know a couple but it would be good to have a list.

So far I have:

  • Stratton House on Park Lane
  • Inverness Road, Twerton

Are there any cafes that have this?

Obviously charity shops are good too. I just feel weird about only giving one book at a time.

Anyone know of any sumac trees in or around Bath?

This is a long shot but I'm hoping to find some sumac trees so I can use the berries for cider and other drinks this summer. I've seen only a couple but they are growing in gardens near busy roads. If anyone knows of any away from busy roads, it would be greatly appreciated!

I come from Canada where sumac grows all over the place and I'm missing that flavour.

Commuting Keynsham to RUH bath

Hi all,

My wife and I are looking for somewhere safe to live, commutable to Bath (and Bristol) hospitals. Keynsham seems like a reasonable choice - I know it's not particularly vibrant, according to this sub, but it seems safe enough and near to the greenery, and has the station.

The price is just not comparable to Bath, and given we're planning to buy in a couple of years anyway it seems pretty ideal.

A house just next to the chocolate quarter retirement village is available, the price is right and it's the right size for us. The commute looks completely reasonable to RUH Bath. We'd be commuting at about 7.20am, but occasionally at proper peak time e.g. 8.20am, in a car.

I wondered what you all thought about the commute - is it likely to be gridlocked and awful?

TIA

Bath locals: What would you hate to see missed in a video about your town?

Hi everyone. I’m planning to come and film Bath next as part of a series where I travel around the UK visiting towns, cities and family day-out spots.

I’m not looking to do a Turdtowns-style verdict or turn anywhere into a joke, (sub if you want to join me on the journey too). Every place has its rough edges, but I’m genuinely interested in the things that make people proud to live somewhere, the bits visitors never see when they just drive through, look at TripAdvisor for ten minutes, then decide they “know” the place. I want to film the version of Bath that locals would actually show someone.

So where should I go? Best walk, view, food spot, independent place, bit of history, family-friendly stop, strange hidden corner or a lovely building!

Also, what does bath get unfairly judged for by people who have never properly spent time there? I’ll build my route from the replies. Examples of the videos I make: ⤵️

Restaurant/things to do recommendations

Looking for some restaurant recommendations please! Bringing my girlfriend for her birthday weekend and would like to go somewhere super nice for the evening meal. Not crazy expensive but somewhere nice! Worth noting I am veggie and she is gluten free. Also any brunch recs please!

Also if anyone has recommendations of what we should do/see whilst we’re there I’d appreciate it! I already have an activity on one of the days but more recommendations would be good.

Where can I get a (beer) keg today?

Having a 4th July BBQ tomorrow, but I've left it a bit late to source a keg. Are there any places in or around Bath that I might be able to pick one up? Maybe not a full-size one as we're unlikely to sink 90 pints, even in the heat.
