I think it very well may be his most powerful song. So I can catch my breathe to face the world again. That and surviving all those lonely nights where I felt I didnt have a friend resonated a lot with me.
I always got pissed most of the comments on Youtube on the music video are about Adam Savage
it’s like receiving an OBLONG object between the ears it makes me want to STOP existing
Why Billy Joel Was Surprised by the Success of “Piano Man”
I've always shared the same view. Piano Man is one of Billy Joel's simpler songs. Don't get me wrong, it's far from low effort. The song has universal appeal because of its relatable theme and its raw, simple storytelling.
When I'm in the car with my parents, who grew up listening to Indian music, and I play Piano Man over Bluetooth, it inevitably puts a smile on their faces. The harmonica sections remind them of classic Bollywood songs.
Compare it with Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, which is widely considered his magnum opus, and the difference in composition and storytelling becomes abundantly clear. Piano Man is still one of my favourite songs, but it probably doesn't crack my Top 5.
Like for example I love Get It Right The First Time more than The Stranger.
Sleeping With The Television On is another banger. I'm Getting Closer is my fave on The Bridge along with Code of Silence.
To me songs like Moving Out, NY State of Mind and Scenes From An Italian Restaurant are good but way too played out at this point IMO. I love discovering or re-discovering his deep tracks.
He had lots of good ones in the 80s. I love this one for the Rodney Dangerfield feel.
Other good ones: Pressure, Allentown, Keeping The Faith, and A Matter of Trust (love the NYC scene) are just a few that come to mind.
But yeah I don't think anyone ever really associates him with music videos per se.
One of my favorites of his and most raw.
If anyone wants to play, the game is connecting 2 or more titles of songs together to make sense (play on words, puns, humor encouraged) Someone in the comments writes a title, then replies to the title are the various connections. For example, Where's The Orchestra? Half a Mile Away. Have fun.
Curious about your thoughts on this.

I’ve seen a lot of these recently and I’m gonna jump on the bandwagon and say mine as when I tell my friends they couldn’t care less.
Honourable mentions: The Entertainer, Surprises, Stiletto, Sleeping with the Television on, Somewhere Along the Line.
I was fooling around with the 1983 remix and original 1971 mix of *Cold Spring Harbor*, and after booting up "You Look So Good to Me," I noticed something odd: The vocals didn't seem to line up quite right. I did some investigating, and I noticed that they apparently used two separate takes of the song for the two versions. I've made a video with two snippets that I think help to clarify my statement in case I'm talking nonsense.

Finally! Rick Beato just mentioned that he interviewed Billy! I can't wait.

My favorite era of Billy Joel
I’m a 29 year old guy and I’m a little embarrassed to say that I’ve just recently started listening to Billy Joel’s music. Not embarrassed in a bad way, but that it’s taken me this long especially since I’m from the USA. Now, before I say more, I should mention that yes, I’ve heard Billy Joel’s songs before, but mainly just his more popular hits like Piano Man, New York State of Mind, We Didn’t Start the Fire, and Uptown Girl. While those are all great (and catchy) songs, I never actually dove more into his albums and other songs.
Now you might ask what made me just start diving into his music finally? It’s actually not what you think. My supervisor is actually a HUGE Elton John fan. Like HUGE. Has been to tons of his concerts and knows like all of his songs. What’s even more ironic, is that he’s from Long Island, NY. The catch… he hates Billy Joel. Always talks bad about him and his music. Him and another coworker of mine butt heads a lot comparing the two as the other one loves Billy Joel. While I’ve heard lots of Elton John songs and enjoy them, I just had to listen to Billy Joel of course fully expecting his music to be garbage. Well, not the case at all.
The other famous Billy Joel song I always hear people refer to is Scenes From an Italian Restaurant. So that’s where I started. Instantly, it got stuck in my head and I started playing it on repeat. Next I found Zanzibar. Once again, hooked and started paying it on repeat. Tbh, I was jamming to that one. Next up, Stiletto. Also Hooked. Then Vienna, The Stranger, and She’s Always a Woman. She’s Always a Woman is definitely more on the slower side, but still imo a beautiful song.
So then I saw everybody saying how great of an album “The Stranger” is so I decided to just play through the album from the beginning. Holy cow, Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song) is my new favorite! I’ve been jamming to that on repeat for 24 hours straight now! Where has this music been all of my life?! I know Elton John is an icon, but man Billy Joel’s got some real hits and bangers!
I know I’ve only scratched the surface of his music, but I’m really enjoying finding hit after hit of his. Just thought I’d share this! Let me know some of your other favorites of his that I haven’t listed here if you want!
