New (to me) colonial US cap lace

#WIPWednesday : I'm finally remaking the lace for my colonial cap. I put one of my first lace projects on it before, but I'm better now! And I found a lace that is more period- and region-appropriate. My early Torchon white piece is on the left. It is less skilled, let's say....

I think it needs to be a smidge smaller still, so one more iteration to come. I think the fan threads should be tighter together as cloth stitch. But this is fine for now.

I reverse engineered the pattern from this #MFABoston cap.

I'm learning bobbin lace and made my own pattern :)

I did tweak a couple things as I went (the main one being the direction of the cloth stitch at the toe) and I have to improve on some things, but I'm honestly thrilled! I started learning about a week ago and I guess I wanted to challenge myself in all the ways at once.

Very open to feedback! Things I am aware of and will improve on:

  • I used threads of different thicknesses because they're what I had at home. This was my first project with color and I didn't realize until I was too far in
  • The shoelaces on top look honestly pretty shoddy, I think I need to add more twists in
  • I did almost all the dark green before doing the medium green or the navy, and if/when I go again I think it makes more sense to do it all together rather than awkwardly weave new threads in later
  • I saw some comments in other threads about putting your pins in at an angle. I'm curious how this applies to projects like this one where I had to rotate my pillow as I went, so the angle would suddenly be pointing at me instead of away from me

Thank you for any comments!

My first attempt - a book worm

I got the pillow made on wednesday and started with a pattern from a book I bought. My mother in law did bobbin lace and taught it for 20 years and handed me down her bobbins 🥰

Rainbow Vest is (almost) done!

I did it!

I designed and made 12 strips of torchon, and sewed them together to make the front and back of a flowy rainbow lace vest! (Pics 1 2 3)

Pic 4 shows the next step to ACTUALLY finish this peice - making the sides to join the red front to the orange back under the arm. (and then the same for the purple front to the blue back on the other side)

I decided on shorter and narrower strips of each colour that feature honeycomb ground 'holes' along the side, in order to thread a ribbon through to join them together (shoelace / corset style) at whatever width looks best. And to cap off an insane project with an insane idea, i am BOBBIN LACING MY OWN RIBBON with the dame colour threads. Here's hoping i have enough thread left on the spool to replenish the worker if I run out 😆

Once it is complete I will post a pic of me actually wearing it! I can’t beleive I'm this close!

First project completed

It's my first time ever doing lace. It was a little frustrating, but I'm glad I finished it, and I learned a lot doing this first one. I can't wait to become good at bobbin lace.

Just starting out with Bobbin lace

Just posting this for anyone who’s in the same situation as me.

Hi, I just started out with bobbin lace, and I’m really enjoying it. When I first saw the bobbins years ago and the material costs, I gave up on learning it because it was crazy expensive to buy the supplies online in my country. But I really, really wanted to learn it. Then one day on Instagram, I saw a creator using clothespins as bobbins, and seeing that opened up a whole world of DIY possibilities in my head.

So, after using DIY bobbins, these are my attempts.

I know they’re not great, but finally doing bobbin lace after stopping myself for such a long time really brought me joy.

Pic 1: Bracelet

Pic 2&3: Part of a rainbow motif - the creator’s pattern was expensive, so I just made do with whatever was available on her page and tried to copy it. It’s an experiment in progress, and I hope to improve more in the future. (Just wanted to see if I could make it using just the videos or will I have to eventually buy the patterns)

Pic 4: Actual rainbow motif (Creator: Lacybotanics on Insta)

Pic 5: Carving my own bobbins (in progress)

Samples on the works!

I'm currently making some samples for an upcoming Bobbin Lace panel I'll be hosting. I know while I'm not super experienced I want to help point others in the right direction for trying to learn bobbin lace. So, If you have any suggestions for information you wish you knew when you were learning or any tips you'd like to give for people just starting out please suggest it! The panel will be in June so any suggestions would be lovely!

First ish time

This is technically my second attempt, but I don't want to count my first one I rage quit when my thread got tangled together. I'm using a garden knee cushion with some fabric over it for my pillow.

My first torchon lace project

This is the 4th project I have completed, but the first torchon project. Im still a little confused by torchon. My book seems to have some slightly different instructions than what im seeing online. Im gonna just keep doing more torchon projects for a bit until it makes more sense. Still loving bobbins though!

Book- advice for 80 year old who wants patterns for her birthday

I have an aunt that goes weekly to make lace with friends here in Spain, she is turning 80 in June and asked me and my friend to get her motif patterns.

She has magazines and such but she wanted to see what else is out there. She showed us photos of flowers and animals etc. To get an idea.

She is advanced, at 79 still goes to workshops to learn more it's truly beautiful ❤️

Any advice is welcome for a proper book or resource

Thank youin advance!

New setup

I can already tell this is going to be a lot easier.

I got my new bobbins for a steal, 36 for £6 on vinted and the cushion is some kind of floor cushion for meditating.

I have more pins and more colours of silk coming tomorrow hopefully.

Im going to do the fans in 2 different colours, a gold and a pale green so I'll see if I mess up.

I feel very professional now XD
