Starting my curling journey

Hi guys. Just wanted to start off by saying that this Black guy (22yo M) has been interested in curling since the age of 13after having discovered it during the winter games in Pyeongchang in 2018, but didn’t get my first experience with it until age 21. I had an awesome time at my local curling club (Peachtree Curling Association) in the Atlanta area, and look forward to starting a new season this year. However, I did want to say that I wish that I could find other Black people who have genuine interest in this sport and would want to take it somewhere. As we know, there aren’t many BIPOC in the world of winter sports and I want to change that. As for resources and community, does anyone have any ideas on where I can find them and bond with others with the same interest outside of the curling clubs? Thank you 🙏🏾.

When does your club's season start?

I'm starting to see bigger teams season training restarting and I'm getting excited once again! (Still enjoying summer obviously!)

When does your club typically start/ end the season?

Can someone please explain to me hog to hog timing and what are the ideal numbers?

I’m having a really difficult time researching this and even asking the experienced players at my club.

For example, I’m looking to fill in these blanks but I’m confused with the different variabilities happening

Examples:
Time [A] is ideal hog to hog for a zone 2 guard on normal ice. If it is [up or below by ] then the ice is [slow or fast by ]

Time [B] is ideal hog to hog for a t line draw on normal ice. If it is [up or below by ] then the ice is [slow or fast by ]

Time [C] is ideal hog to hog for hack weight on normal ice. If it is [up or below by ] then the ice is [slow or fast by ]

But what confuses me by these A, B, C numbers is the individual thrower themself. Let’s say the person is not fully consistent.
- If the call was a t-line draw
- and then the result was light
- but the hog to hog number was say faster than expected

Then how much of this can I attribute to the individual thrower? Or to the ice changing?

Thats why I’m still preferring the back line to hog line weight just to see if the thrower is too fast or too slow and I can see where the rock ends up and then they can adjust accordingly

But I know this is what more novice intermediates teams do but I’m confused
how the more advanced teams interpret these hog to hog numbers

Streaming in US

Is there a guide anywhere for US fans to somewhat closely follow curling?

I haven’t watched much outside of the obvious Scotties and Brier on YouTube plus whatever Peacock is showing for the past couple of years. I’d like to watch more this year.

So far I’ve come up with: rockchannel.com for GSOC and curlingchannel.tv for European events. Looks like there is a cost associated with both but no information is on either site.

Presumably, tsn+ or sportsnet+ would be an option via a VPN but I’m not sure if the amount of curling on either really makes it worth it.

Some individual events would have YouTube broadcasts based off of past years.

I realize there are similar threads on here but they are many years old and a lot of the info is out of date.

Is being accused of bowling a common curling term?

I’ve been playing online curling on flyordie.com and in some of my games, my opponent uses the chat function to accuse me of “bowling.” I assume they mean I’m playing a lot of takeouts rather than draws, but in my 3 years of real curling I’ve never heard this. Is this a real thing? I also assume whenever someone does this that they don’t curl in real life since they’re talking trash in a curling game lol.

Rock League Tickets

Does anyone have any insight into when they will release tickets for this? I looked into going to one of the GSOC events but hotel prices are outrageous for cities I have no real desire to travel to. I either have been or there is no real draw (haha) for me to travel there besides the curling. I like to explore the city while I'm there. Instead I am looking at attending rock league but I cannot find any info as to when tickets might become available. Looking at the GSOC events they have lots of tickets still available. Maybe they are waiting for sales of those to improve before they release RL? I was hopeful with the tv deal announcement a RL announcement would be coming shortly.

Helsinki Metro / Finland Curling

Hi Curling gang,

Trying through here since I am a bit stuck on the ground, but I am looking for a connection or advice on how to go about joining a league/team/club in the Helsinki metro area.

We just recently moved here in summer and would like to continue curling, but it seems the structure is very different from how it is in North America so we have been having little luck finding a club.

If anybody is from the area or has contacts, I would love if you could share (gladly via Chat/DM) so that I can follow up and get in touch with folks, hopefully before the season starts.

Thanks, good curling.

[John Cullen] Krista Scharf is back. Reports of her retirement were greatly exaggerated, it seems. Team Despins out of Thunder Bay announcing on IG that Krista will be their new skip after an injury forced Nicole Westlund Stewart out of regular play for the season.

Need major advice/help with skill issues in curling.

Hey everyone. i know it’s not curling season just yet, but this popped into my head from last year. I am 16F, and will be doing curling for the second year in a row this winter, And i remember everyone else in my classes were able to effortlessly slide down the sheet to the other end, and when i try to walk down the sheet of ice to the other end (without my grip, when i get too confident) it takes me forever, and all the others in my group are able to just slide down i. seconds.
I can slide out pretty far (past the centre line) but only with a crutch, or just a rock, (both hands on the rock), even getting up and walking a few feet out of the hack i sometimes slip and fall.
It’s really embarrassing for me, because i feel like no one else has the problem, and everyone else in my group is learning way faster than me and can use the broom to push out.

Six months into curling as a complete beginner -- what actually surprised me about learning this sport

Picked up curling last fall through a learn-to-curl night at a local club, mostly because a coworker dragged me along and I had nothing better to do on a Thursday. Expected to slide around, throw some rocks, laugh at myself for two hours, and never go back. Instead I signed up for the beginner league the following week and have been going every Sunday since.

The thing nobody really tells you before you start is how much of the early learning curve is just about your body position and balance, not about the rock at all. I spent the first month basically fighting the hack and trying not to faceplant in the delivery. The rotation at release felt completely unnatural at first, like trying to pat your head and rub your stomach. Once it started clicking though, it was genuinely one of the more satisfying physical feelings I've had learning a new sport.

Sweeping was the other surprise. Watching it on television it looks almost decorative, like something to keep players busy while the rock travels. Actually doing it, reading the ice, communicating with the skip in real time -- that part is way more demanding than it looks. My first few games I was basically useless with the broom because I had no idea what I was seeing or how hard to actually push.

The social side of the club is also something I did not expect to matter as much as it does. Everyone stays for a drink after the game, opposing team included. It has a genuinely different atmosphere from most recreational sports I have tried, more cooperative even between competitors somehow.

Curious whether other people who came in through a learn-to-curl event ended up sticking with it the same way, or whether it usually takes a few sessions before it really hooks you.
