The Handheld pie vendor got harassed at the market today.

The town idiot posted a video on her Facebook page and the hateful algorithm put it in my feed since it was related to Davis. I did not watch it, but it was clear by the responses that Beth harassed one of the markets kindest vendors today for no reason.

I think it would be nice if we were all more attentive and stood up to her when she does this shit to people in our presence. I got to the market late today and didn't see this in person or I would have lost it. Also, maybe we should all support the handheld pie truck next week and make them sell out.

Hate should not be tolerated here.

Where are the Latinos/Hispanics??

Hello, I’ve been living in Davis for about a year now after living in a big city for a while. The one thing I can’t find here is my Latino community, where do yall hang out at??? It felt so weird going from a place with a lot of Latin events to a place with barely anything. I am a Latino grad student and want to find community here as it’s been tough not being able to express myself fully.

If there are not places in Davis, are there places in Sac or maybe SF??

The MU and Eureka Freedges are stocked!

The MU and Eureka Ave Freedges are stocked. Sorry if the bread looks different. I'm using Costco flour and I'm still trying to work out the ratios as there's less gluten in them. I have gotten a lot of support for what I'm doing! I'm thinking about making a list of ingredients and supplies and their projected costs so I can keep making bread as it's my passion and it also helps feed people :3

I'm not letting this passion die, so I'm thinking about reaching out to the Freedge people to get an index of where the freedges are in the city as lists online are inaccurate (I checked). I might also ask the university for a bread making room if they have a room to spare that's hygienic and has electricity (perhaps The Pantry has room?) and I might approach the city council for funds. idk I'm playing it all by ear

Author looking for perspectives on Davis

I'm writing a horror/comedy novel set partly in Davis, along with San Leandro and a rural stretch near Live Oak. I want Davis to feel like a real character in the book, not just a backdrop, and I'd love input from people who actually live there.

Full disclosure: my only exposure to Davis was a single visit in 2002, dropping a girlfriend off at UC Davis. My impression - clean, chill, safe, orderly - was almost certainly just the campus bubble, especially compared to my own childhood in South Sacramento.

So I'm turning to you all: what's Davis actually like to live in? A few things I'm curious about:

  • How much does the university dominate daily life, versus the "real" town underneath it?
  • Any weird stuff? Local legends, ghost stories, odd landmarks, or "everyone in Davis knows about X" type things?
  • What do people actually do for fun, where do they eat/drink, what's the traffic/bike culture really like day-to-day?
  • Is Davis as uniformly comfortable as it seemed to outsider-me, or are there rougher edges; parts of town that feel different from the postcard version?
  • Pet peeves about how Davis gets stereotyped or misrepresented?
  • Since it's horror/comedy, I'm especially interested in anything that has an eerie or uncanny edge. Abandoned buildings, isolated roads at night, weird local history, unexplained incidents, that kind of thing.

Any details, even mundane ones, are genuinely useful. The small specific stuff is what makes a setting feel lived-in rather than researched.

Looking for some good recommendations for Gardner

Hi! I’m looking for some recommendations for gardeners to take over looking after our yard. We live in Wildhorse area. Current gardeners have been less than stellar for many reasons. Would appreciate this community’s referrals. Thank you! You can dm me or leave it here.

Co-operative housing in/near Davis?

I know of the domes but AFAIK it's only for students. Are there any other intentional living co-op houses where residents share in tasks, are mostly plant based, etc?

World Cup in Davis

I’ll be passing through Davis during the USA v Bosnia & Herzegovina game today. Are there any watch parties happening? Outdoor screens? Other suggestions to watch the game?

Help Find Kirby

Hello! I’m sure many people have seen Tony, an unhoused man, around downtown. He is always with his cat, Kirby, who rides on his shoulders!
Tony takes extraordinary care of Kirby, but the little guy disappeared last night!
If you see this cat downtown, or anywhere else, you can deliver news to any workers at Temple coffee. Or, better, Tony himself if you can!

New in Davis

Hi future neighbors!

My family and I will be relocating to Davis this August because I'll be starting a new position at Sutter Health. We are a family of four with two young children—a 5-year-old who will be entering kindergarten and a 3-year-old who will need daycare or a preschool/Pre-K program.

We're still in the process of finding a home, so we don't have a permanent address yet. I would really appreciate any recommendations for quality daycares or Pre-K programs for our 3-year-old. We're looking for a safe, nurturing, and reliable place, and we'd love to hear about your experiences.

I also have a question regarding kindergarten enrollment. Since we haven't finalized our housing yet, is there a neighborhood school or district office that can help us with enrolling our 5-year-old while we're still searching for a home? We'll definitely be living in Davis, but we're concerned about making sure he's able to start school on time.

Any advice, recommendations, or tips for a family new to Davis would mean so much to us. Thank you in advance for your kindness and help, we're excited to become part of the community!

Robert E Willet VS North Davis Elementary

We’re planning to move to Davis and have narrowed it down to two housing options.

Option 1: Assigned to Robert E. Willett Elementary. It’s a 2 bed, 2 bath and relatively small. I also don’t love that it doesn’t get much natural light.

Option 2: Assigned to North Davis Elementary. It’s a 3 bed, 2 bath in a very nice neighborhood. The house is relatively new, clean, and overall much more appealing. The downside is that it’s about $400 more per month. Interestingly, the house is actually closer to Robert E. Willett than to North Davis Elementary.

We plan to rent long-term and hopefully expand our family, so the extra space would be nice. However, I know Robert E. Willett has an amazing reputation.
Would it be worth choosing Option 1 just for the school assignment? I need to make a decision by tomorrow and would really appreciate any advice or similar experiences from others. Thank you!

Pregnant in Davis… surely I can’t be the only one?

Hi everyone! I’m currently pregnant with my first child, and I don’t really know any other expecting moms around Davis.
I can’t be the only pregnant woman here… right? 😅 I’d love to find other expecting moms to chat with, grab coffee, go for walks, or just share the ups and downs of pregnancy.

If there are any pregnancy support groups, prenatal meetups, book clubs, or communities in Davis (or nearby), I’d be so grateful for recommendations.

If you’re expecting around Davis, please say hi! And if you know another expecting mom in the area, I’d love an introduction. Who knows, maybe there are enough of us to build a little community together. I’d love for this post to be the beginning of it. 💜

Pools?

Hi! I recently moved to North Davis and I’m still getting to know Davis as a whole. This might be a weird question, but are there any apartment complexes or community pools around here that are pretty relaxed about guests/day passes or generally don’t mind non-residents using them?

I don’t wanna cause any problems anywhere or seem like i’m sneaking in - I just love a pool and my neighborhood/community unfortunately does not have one. :/

DAE hear the police copter above north/central Davis

I’m by the Savemart and I can hear them in the sky right now. They’re announcing something from the helicopter but I was only able to capture “The police are looking for a white…”. Anyone know what’s going on?

Useless evacuation alerts

I just received a useless 'immediate evacuation' alert from the Yolo County OES. I live in north Davis; the alert is for "DUN-OO9, between Country Road 2 to 6, and Country Road".

Two things - I've no idea what the coordinates are for the alert. I suspect most of us would not know. Was just informed by a kind dispatcher that the alert is for a wildfire in... Dunnigan. Pretty long ways away from Davis.

How do we get Yolo OES to send more helpful, relevant alerts?
