At the time of the article, Destiny had 169,998 unique log ins for a dead game

https://popularity.report

Per popularity report, this “dead game” still had nearly 170,000 daily unique log ins across all platforms. This has since jumped to 228,000. Baffling that they would kill the franchise that still pulls these numbers in its darkest time.

Fine. I'm coming out of retirement. Time to redownload the game. I'll be there June 9th to show I care.

Bungie cannot survive without Destiny. Marathon cannot sustain them without Destiny. We need to show Sony we don't want this, we ABSOLUTELY DON'T WANT THIS.

We want D3. We want the stories to come to the most optimal and idealistic conclusions. We cannot be left wanting forever.

It's time to OVERDELIVER as a community.

I will be signing on June 9th. Join at the final stand. We must show them this game matters. It cannot join the IP graveyard that Sony has gathered over the decades.

Trust me. I'm a Legend of Dragoon fan. They will bury Destiny forever out of spite because Pete Parson overrepresented D2's worth and Sony overpaid.

We cannot let Pete Parsons kill Destiny.

There's no substitute, don't search for it

Destiny 2 is basically an umbrella, you CAN be the type of player that enjoyed some niche part, be it its activities, or becoming a collector, the lore expert or the raid nights and at the same time find a game that fills that niche.

But if you loved Destiny as a whole, I'm sorry, but there's no substitute for it. I don't mean it as doomposting, see it as a friend trying to help you, truly.

I tried Division 2 and Warframe, I played somewhat a good bit of Warframe but dropped after feeling locked behind needing platinum to unlock more Warframe spaces. The gameplay didn't do it for me, but the gathering of resources, crafting and acitivity diversity was what appealed to me. As for The Division 2, I just feel the game is bland. It does its homework well and I think that's it. There's no appeal or hook, it's just a fine game. I think I would like it more if it was a FPS, but being third person really puts me off.

This is just to say that, before the inevitable end, I tried searching for it and got to this conclusion. The only thing that may come close to a substitute is where you'll find friends and build memories again. When you find a special place to call a second or third home. If you go to these games with the refugee mindset, you'll get yourself disappointed. They're good games, just not what you want. You want Destiny, we all do.

Mourn this loss. Play the update. Try to gather your friends, like I am trying, for a last hurrah. You can even make news friends that are in the same emotional state as you. Do some final moments with Pantheon Nights or SRL fun. Anything, really. Take your time.

When the time comes, just like Destiny in 2014, you'll boot a game without even knowing that it may change your next 10 years forever. You'll find home.

Eyes Up, Guardians

Diablo II, Age of Empires 2, StarCraft II, WoW Classic, Team Fortress 2. what do they all have in common?

People still play them years later because players genuinely love those games. Even after live updates slow down or end, great games survive because communities keep them alive.

Even Destiny 1 still has players today.

Destiny 2 Evergreen will be the same. We’ll still raid, chase loot, run PvP, help new Guardians, and make memories because there’s simply nothing else quite like Destiny.

No one makes gunplay, raids, music, atmosphere, and that feeling of being a Guardian the way Destiny does.

I’ll be here.

Forever in Destiny 2 Evergreen.

There is nowhere to go for refugees

Let's be completely honest, there will never be another game like destiny until they decide to make 3 (if it's even possible)

FF14 is apples to oranges, you won't get to shoot the ace of spades and feel the high of handcannons anymore

Warframe has literally no endgame and it's just an endless pursuit of money to trade with other people, and much less builds once the meta is figured out and they only add 1 to 3 missions every few months

Borderlands 4 isn't really an MMO

Division 2 you aren't space wizards or ninjas or whatever

Our only option is to leave this genre entirely in order to enter something that will never come close to how this game made us feel

Edit: I'm trying Warframe for the fifth time, sorry for my wrong assessment of warframe

also wanna add subscription based games suck ass and they should remove that shit forever

Luke Smith talks after long time going dark: "At its best, content was a machine to create memories and friendships. No new content stings. This pain is about losing a place where so many memories were made. It stings not because of what it was, but the realization of what it won't be."

Play June 9th

Play Pantheon 2.0. Play dungeons. Play strikes. Play crucible. Play anything. Just play Destiny.

The only thing Bungie management and Sony care about are numbers, so show up and contribute to the number when the update drops. Show them what they will be missing out on by abandoning us.

today marks the second time I have cried over destiny 2

I have been playing destiny since I was... I wanna say 8, give or take a year or two either way. even when I took extended breaks I always knew it was there, a safe game for me to have fun and just blast some aliens in. that safe space is gone now. sure the game will still be up. but I'll never see something new come from the game I have grown up playing. I do not know where to go anymore. it feels like I've lost one of the few constants in my life. and I am aware I am not alone in this feeling, but lord I needed to find some way to collect my thoughts. I don't know how to move on from this game. I don't know if I ever will. it's been a good run. better than I ever couldve thought. and with that it's over

Helping my husband with the end of the game

Putting this is guide because I have no idea what I’m doing, I don’t use Reddit much.
My husband has been playing destiny 2 for years now and he’s devastated by this new announcement that they’re gonna do on June 9th. I personally don’t play destiny, I play more cozy games, but I’ll be there with him during the announcement because we both know he’ll cry watching it 🥹
I was wondering, how is this fandom dealing with the grief? Is there anything I can do to help him through it? It’s been his main video game for years and I really want to help him, he can’t stop being sad about it…
Anyways thank you! And sorry if it’s the wrong flair or if it’s a common asked question, I bet this kind of discussion must be really popular right now

"It's just a video game."

For over a decade, Destiny has been a cornerstone of the cultural zeitgeist for millions of people around the world. It has carried many through dark times. It has forged lifelong friendships and offered a sacred ritual to look forward to. It has been a place to wash away the weight of reality and an escape that made life bearable; where the monsters of the real world paled in comparison to the ones on our screens. It is a challenge to overcome, a mystery to uncover, and a shared journey that a huge community of fans took together. Destiny has always been more than the sum of its parts, and is far, far bigger that means so much to so many.

Yesterday, we read its eulogy.

Some see a canceled piece of entertainment, others mourn the loss of creativity, community, and what this fantastic world beyond the stars represented. I for one feel a void left in my love for gaming that will likely never be filled again. It is truly the end of an era, and millions of passionate players are now left grieving all that could have and should have been.

Destiny is dead. Long live Destiny.

*edit - no this was not written by AI, good grief.

I am devastated

I think im not the only one feeling this way. But this game means so much to me and i have not stopped thinking about the news since it came about.

This is the only game I have legit fallen in love with. The only game I play and the one game I am always looking forward to play. I've been playing destiny since TTK and my biggest regret was not buying it when it first came out.

Destiny 2 is the only video game that made me feel this way. It helped me through so much shit in my life. Break ups, family loss, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, etc.

It is crazy to think that a video game has helped more than people realize, and the fact that we wont get any more updates kills me inside.

The one thing that keep me going in life was more destiny (this sounds so dumb I know) but to think that there were more expansions and content coming was always my reason to keep going. Even if the content wasn't the best. I would always find the time to play it no matter what. Even if it was for a couple of hours a day.

I've cried a couple of times because I never saw this happening. Sure, I knew it was going to end someday but never in a million years though it was going to happen in the next couple of months.

I want a destiny 3 sure but I want destiny 2 to keep going. I want closure. I want a proper ending like the final shape was to the light and darkness saga. I want the best ending possible for this game and for our Guardians. I dont want a "hey so next update is the last one so yeah"

It kills me to think that the executives just let this happen to one of the greatest game I have ever played.

I also feel bad for the devs and people that actually cared about the game.

I will keep playing untill the serves are done. Destiny will always be with me.

I feel lost.

I just needed to get this out of my chest

Totally accurate, not at all made up facts about Destiny 2 that are super canon (Finale)

  • The Last City is being placed on indefinite lockdown due to reports of increased activity from the Conductor. This is not out of fear but rather lack of interest in dealing with her.
    • Eido has started a Last City book club. The member count is in the thousands.
    • Elsie Bray is extremely annoyed that she now has ample time to explain.
    • Guardians are annoyed that they are only now getting sparrow racing back after 12 years of its absence.
    • The Vanguard would like to remind the Last City’s population that the city has existed 323 times longer than the Dark Age city of Concord, and will always live in the hearts and minds of its people.
    • Warlocks are encouraging the Vanguard to finally pick a new Speaker, given that the last one died 12 years ago.
    • Fynch and Ikora have started a new matching service to pair orphaned ghosts with lightless guardians. The working title is “Boo.”
    • Empress Caitl is working to purify the Leviathan in order to convert it into a space colony. The working title is “Apex Philanthropy.”
    • Crow has adjusted to his role as Hunter Vanguard by ignoring the lockdown orders and continuing to send Hunters on missions.
    • The city’s smiths are being encouraged to take this time to make new hunter armor that isn’t asymmetrical for no discernible reason.
    • Saladin would like to remind all guardians that 12 years without SIVA returning is an unambiguously good thing for humanity.
    • Pete of Pete’s Autoshop has been declared an enemy of the Last City, and is to be detained on sight for crimes against its people.
    • Crow and Mara Sov have begun trying to reconnect by having a weekly meet-up where they watch golden age soap operas together.
    • The Drifter was seen ring shopping in the Eliskni district. Anyone who reports this to Eris Morn will be severely reprimanded.
    • A statue of Commander Zavala holding a red lance has been constructed at the tower. Everyone agrees it is the least that can be done for him.
    • Saint-14 has begun teaching Eliksni and Cabal children how to headbutt. The results have been mixed.
    • The thunderbolt contingent has established permanent outposts on all hostile planets. Any with the spark of heroism in their hearts are welcome to enlist, be they titans or not.
    • There are rumors that Dredgen Bael has been killed by Shin Malphur. We will likely not know if this is true until we hear from Bael again.
    • Lodi is considering starting a podcast that is just him being told about the Last City’s history by Eido and Ikora.

If I can break kayfabe here at the end, I would just like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone that has expressed their enjoyment of these posts over past 4 years. Your kind words have meant more to me than you will likely ever know, and I will deeply miss making these every month. If you can think of other games this type of thing would be fun for, please dm me and let me know. I am truly grateful for this community, and for the devs who put in countless hours of work into making one hell of a game. I don’t know what the future holds for Destiny, but I know I’ll see y’all again somewhere. See you in the stars, guardians.

Destiny's Ending - The Five Stages of Grief.

You can really tell this game meant a lot to people because I have seen all five stages of grief over these last few days. These are my sentiments in almost this exact order and I know much of the community is feeling the same way.

Denial - there is no way that this TWAB is real and this is how it ends

Bartering - Okay Destiny 2 may be ending but they have to have Destiny 3 coming down the pipeline right?

Anger - What a terrible ending. Fuck Pete Parsons.

Sadness - I can't believe it's over, I grew up with this game and now it's ending. Somebody hold me.

Acceptance - It was time for it to end. Let's enjoy the new content and then move on.

We all have to wrestle with these feelings but I just want to say it was a pleasure.

"At least the stars will remember the shape I gave them." - Oryx, The Taken King

I think this quote by one of the best characters of this franchise we've had the pleasure of knowing sums up the best possible way the impact both Destiny and Destiny 2:

A franchise that was a hit in 2014 and will continue to live through the words of the people that experienced it, which met a saddening end thanks to mismanagement, corruption and greed.
