Suggestions on finding rentals?

Hi! Looking to stay in Door County for a long weekend this summer with a group of 5 adults. We’d ideally like a 3-bedroom rental, but 2 bedrooms could work too since we only need 3 beds total.

I’ve been looking mainly in Sister Bay, Fish Creek, and Egg Harbor, and I was wondering if anyone has advice on the best ways to find good-quality rentals that aren’t outrageously expensive. I’ve found a few decent options on Airbnb and VRBO, but wasn’t sure if there are better local rental companies or other sites I should be checking.

I’d also love opinions on which of those 3 areas you’d recommend staying in! The reason I’ve been drawn to each:

- Sister Bay: seems the most lively/walkable with lots of restaurants, bars, and things to do
- Fish Creek: love the outdoorsy feel and proximity to Peninsula State Park
- Egg Harbor: really like the quaint/cozy vibe and wineries

Would love any recommendations or tips from people who know the area well. Thanks!

***Edit: looking to stay 3-4 nights, I’ve been successful at finding some around $350-$550 a night on VRBO, so looking around that budget.

Death’s Door Boat Tours

Considering doing one of these in June but we are curious about the bathrooms in board. Looks like this is the same company that does boat tours out of Fish Creek, and their bathrooms were not readily accessible to those with mobility issues. DDBT site says boats have bathrooms, but they also encourage people to use the facilities near the dock before boarding, so…

Meeting new people

(F20) I’m curious how 18-20 year olds (specifically not old enough to sit and socialize in a bar) meet people around here? I’m here seasonally- I’ve met my coworkers, amazing people but all older than me and in different stages of life. My house mates are all the opposite gender as me, so i’m not too buddy buddy with them at least yet. And i’ve been finding it hard to find people my age that like to hike, fish, or anything.

And with that, outside of hiking and shopping, what activities are around here? Like the bowling arena or fish creeks drive in theatre? i’m looking to make the most out of this summer and hope to not spend 3/5 months just searching for people to spend my time with :)

TICKS

Hi all - I know this is always a concern, but for those of you who have been up to the Door already this spring or live there - how bad are the ticks? We live in northern IL and they are unusually bad right now. A friend just pulled 26 off her dog after walking on a paved, wide, forest preserve path, and the local park district actually closed a local wooded area to school trips because the ticks are so prevalent. I have never heard of this happening before - it's very unusual.

I've been reading that people are finding ticks crawling on their blankets in the sand at Nicolet beach, and even at the beach in Sister Bay, and they're on the picnic tables near school house beach. We are considering staying in a bayside house near Sturgeon Bay in mid-June, and won't be doing any hiking. We'll have young kids with us and plan to take a boat tour, visit the Farm, etc. However, I'm absolutely terrified of catching Lyme or other illnesses and am hesitating reading about the increase in tick related ER visits in the area. A friend is a doc near Door county and has said tick bites definitely seem unusually high. Anyone have some recent insight or does it just seem like business as usual? A friend with a home near Sister Bay said Peninsular State Park is bad right now? (please no snarky comments...I know ticks are always as issue, but things are definitely worse right now where I live. I've been visiting Door county my whole life and used to have a home there when I was little, but this wasn't as big an issue then). Thanks so much.

Crazy lights in sky last night

Did anyone else see the crazy lights in the sky last night around 11:20pm. I’m pretty sure it was a rocket plume with some auroras. It was spectacular to watch.

Gravel Bike Routes

Coming for Memorial Day, staying in Sister Bay. Trying to decide whether to bring gravel bike or road bike. Preference is for gravel, but my brief research has indicated there doesn't appear to be much around. I'm looking to do 80-100 miles and am OK if less than half of it is on gravel as long as I can stay away from cars. Or you can just tell me to bring the road bike! Thanks.

Perch fry for lunch on Fridays?

My mother in-law is asking about a lunch fish fry for a thing in mid June. I’m never around mid day Friday unless I’m trying to catch a ferry. What do you guys recommended? My first few thoughts are not open for lunch.

Best dinner spots to watch the sunset?

Staying in Fish Creek this coming Thurs-Sat. Any recs for dinner spots nearby to get a good view of the sunset?

Also - with flies hatching, wonder if those tend to be a bother when walking the sidewalks by shops and restaurants or more so only if you’re hiking/staying right on the water? We spend a lot of time with lake flies this time of year at home so aren’t strangers to them, just trying to plan (and the ones we have leave green dots everywhere - is that the case with these too?)

Tours 3.5 to 4 hours. Any suggestions?

Hello, I'll be brining a group of around 60-70 people to Door County in August. We are looking for an activity or tour for approximately 3.5 to 4 hours on Friday afternoon. We'll be staying at the Stone Harbor in Sturgeon Bay, but we could get anywhere. We've done the Trolley Tours and the Fish Creek Boat Tour. Any other options you would recommend?
