More on Story Questions

9 Chapter was a blast for me. I've never thought that someone will write down my thought of how to handle the meaning of a scene. And then a milestone of set of scenes. And an arc for bunch of milestones. It was something that gave me chills. Then I've played Microscope RPG a lot. And at some point I've lost the way I used to set and execute the story questions for a games. People around didn't realize what I wanted to ask them with the whole surrounding area of all the rolls, mechanics, rules introduced to the scene.

Now I do realize that if you're not introducing players into the story question you're asking--it's getting quite hard to explain what for you're playing at. It's like a Fate Golden Rule in reverse. How a GM makes an obvious statement about the reasons of a scene to happen at first place. And setting a mechanics, that gives you a way to handle a game part to achieve or not the stakes at the table. And it seems like a great tool to synchronize the scene list you actually want to make to be able to uncover the arc for the character.

My new love with the story questions started with the Mindjammer game from beloved Sarah Newton. The 22nd, 23rd Chapters of the said book are just masterpiece. They are incredible. I just can't explain how valuable, and insightful those become for me. Using this Themes, Styles, Tones, Tropes, and Genre system to create a big great campaign to play out. It's just incredible. It's like a more complicated to ask questions in a bar. Instead of speaking about something really complex, you're playing this out. What's a family is in a constantly changing future? Dark realistic gritty setting of mining on an asteroid. Playing against a monster on it with your colleagues. But the game is not about the monster--it's an instrument to ask you questions for a milestone. Who's your family now? Where are they?

It's great way to make a really overcomplicated conversation between players. And do not use it for burning your life with goblin's blood spelt out on a grass or dungeon floor. It's the way to ask you, how should we live together with an angry green people who wants his own happiness, and good living. But they can't cooperate for some reason. They want to be a respected well species. How can we play this out? The actions of your character would be the answers. This depicts to me the meaning of "drama" word. Choice of a player--answer--conversation I have with him. This still gives me so much chills in my loved hobby.

Subnatica one shot horror fate

Hey all I got the idea of running a subnautica themed horror one shot, however still very new to Fate. I wanted to see the ideas the hive mind would come up with. How would you change the system, how many aspects? Would you reduce the amount of skills everyone can have leveled up and how many Stunts? Overall what ideas do you think would make the game better! Thanks all!

Resources for running Cultivation/Xianxia in Fate?

I've been looking into running a short campaign for my local game group based on Cultivation/Xianxia fiction, with the primary inspiration being the Cradle book series. Given the reason my players are interested in that genre, Fate seemed like it might be a good pick for telling those sorts of stories, but I'm relatively new to the system. I've had the book for FATE Core and a number of supplement pdfs from Bundle of Holding for a while now and generally understand the mechanics, but haven't actually run it and need some advice and framework for how best to run that particular style of game. Are there any books, toolkits, resources, etc. that y'all would recommend? Does FATE work well for the bombastic and semi-hard magic style of Cultivation? Any direction or advice you can provide would be appreciated.

Batman's Fate Character Sheet, as voted by the community! (Final Day - Results and feedback)

Here are the final results! Thank you again to everyone who participated in this game and for all your support! I've been having a blast this week reading every idea.

Yesterday's top-voted Stunts were "Bat Utility Belt" by u/bythisaxeiconquer, "Contingency Plan" by u/HadACookie, and "I'm Batman" by u/zacharydamon. All of them cover different parts of the character, so I didn't need to edit a thing! Very cool :)

I've also expanded the list of skills to include the top 9 in the ranking.

I know there has been a bit of debate on whether this is a truly "perfect" character sheet. I think it ended up pretty neat! But as I've been saying, I think the true value of the exercise is in the variety of ideas, the explanations behind them, and the discussion around what gets chosen or not. We created a lot of great examples that will be here for future reference!

Discussion posts: High Concept , Trouble , Secondary Aspects , Skills , Stunts

-

Now, today's post is for giving feedback. I have some questions for you!

  • What did you think of this game? Did you enjoy it?
  • Was it an interesting choice of character?
  • Do you like the resulting character sheet?
  • Would you like this game to be repeated in the future?

And, if it were repeated:

  • What things would you change?
  • How frequent would you like the game to be? Every week? Every two weeks? Once a month...?
  • And most importantly: what character would you like to do next?

I'd say it would be cool if it were a very different type of character, to really show the versatility of the system, but of course they have to be very popular so everyone can participate.

-

My personal takeaways/changes: if we do this again, I'd probably add the two missing slots for the secondary aspects and add the Top 3 from the third day. For skills, I think putting the top 9 in the ranking works nicely, and for the stunts, I think this top 3 system worked great. It also encourages people to look deeper for candidates to vote for instead of just looking at the ones already at the top.

This system has a lot of "snowball" effect and heavily favors the submissions that come first. I know there is a "contest" mode on Reddit, but I don't know how I can activate it, maybe it is something the mods need to enable.

Thank you for reading! See you in the comments :)

(Hope you like my corrected version of the sheet)

What would be the top 3 skills of Batman? The three most voted are added to the Fate Character Sheet! (Day 4)

Yesterday's most voted comment was "Gotham's Golden Son" by u/panossquall, winning by a landslide with 80 points! Thanks to everyone that participated with amazing secondary aspects, there were a lot of great ones and a lot of interesting discussion yesterday.

We arrive at the middle of the week and this step will be a little different. For the skills, I'll comment all the standard skill list from Fate Core and you can vote my comments to try and democratically rank them. (Please don't downvote me to hell lol, not upvoting will probably drive an option to the bottom anyway)

You can also comment to discuss why some skill should be higher, lower, and adding your own custom skills if you think the standard list isn't great for this setting!

But, being in the middle of the week, let's take this opportunity to talk about the game! Are you enjoying this experiment? How would you change the system if we played again? Do you have ideas for characters that would be cool? Any feedback is welcome, I read you :)

Zones, Creatively Used

I was working on a Sci-Fi setting where multiple drones can be controlled remotely using specialty cybernetics. I decided that an (N)PC is able can have any number of drones in play, though they need to transfer their consciousness to other drones by "moving" to that drone's "zone."

Can the community please share other ways they've used Zones in a non-geographical way to facilitate gameplay?

Is Fate really that easy?

Hi everyone, I've been playing Fate since 2020 and have been a Game Master for a while since then. Since then, I've always seen Fate veterans saying it's a simple system, however my players, especially those coming from other systems, find it confusing. Have you experienced this? Do you know any way to reduce this resistance and rejection?

Hey everyone! We are making a video game using FATE RPG mechanics

Hi everyone,

We are a small team focused on narrative RPGs. We’re currently working on a game called Kardiya: The Winds of Fate, heavily inspired by FATE RPG. As a team, we’ve been building our own universe for about 4 years and have been actively designing it to be played using the FATE system.

About 3 years ago, we created our own RPG book based on FATE (it’s in Turkish, so I’m not linking it here, but I can send the PDF via DM if anyone is interested ^^). Around 2 years ago, we also produced what is currently the only comprehensive “How to Play FATE RPG” YouTube series in our country.

Now, we’re taking the next step and turning these ideas into a PC game. At its core, the game is a narrative RPG with dicebuilding and roguelite elements. Our main focus is to bring FATE’s core philosophy into the game, especially the aspect system, fudge dice, the stress mechanic, and most importantly the idea that even failed rolls should not stop the flow of the story. Instead, they should push it in different directions. We believe we’ve managed to capture that feeling.

We’ll be starting a playtest soon. If anyone is interested, you can join our mailing list through our website. I’d especially love to see people from the FATE community take part in the test. <3

Thanks in advance.

How to implement Shouts from Skyrim

So, recently I stumbled at this The Elder Scrolls hack(https://docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/1LrwjJtmQL1XaJd\_UBGWxvMXNi-pDMeTccy50RPbNrcw/mobilebasic) and became super exited at trying to DM Fate with this, but I have exactly zero experience with this system. And the problem is, I want at least one of my players to use Thu'um/Shouts but I'm not sure how to implement it. Should it be used with Speech skill and aspect, it's own separate skill, or be purely stunts? And how to implement ability to use weaker version of shouts by using only 1 or 2 words instead of full 3?

If someone doesn't know, Thu'um is a powrful ancient type of magic, originally learned from immortal dragons, and is done by shouting 1 to 3 words(more words - stronger effect) in dragon tongue. While it's use is natural to dragons, mortals need extensive training, a lot of time and spiritual contemplation to learn even single shout. Unlike regular magic, where it is divided into disciplines with many thematically similar spells, each Shout is unique.

What would be a perfect Trouble for Batman? Top comment gets added to the Fate Character Sheet! (Day 2)

First of all, thanks a lot for all the support and aspect suggestions! Yesterday's top voted comment was "I am vengeance; I am the night" by u/tunisia3507

Today, we discuss and vote what would be a good Trouble for Batman. What is the internal conflict of this character? What haunts them? What makes them get into problems, make their life difficult, and interesting?

And again:

I've compiled some guidelines from both Fate Core and The Book of Hanz to make good aspects, just as a reminder:

  • It says more than one thing.
  • It has a double edge (can be used for the benefit or against the character).
  • It can be easily understood on itself, without extra explanation.
  • It can be used in a lot of different ways and situations.
  • It makes the character cool!
    • Granting permission for doing new stuff
    • Adding an interesting flavor
    • Complicating their life
    • Adding details to the setting
    • Forcing failures where there would usually be succeses

Remember to write for the context of the setting. We’re assuming a world similar to the DC Universe, so no need to specify he’s a "comic book hero."

Comment below with your best Trouble! The one with the most upvotes by tomorrow wins. I'll post everyday around 7:00AM-EST / 1:00PM-CEST.

Had a successful playtest of "Traces to Nowhere" the third adventure for ESPionage.

This replicates the Brindlewood Bay mystery mechanic using Fate's Overcome.

They didn’t solve the mystery, but they had fun getting sidetracked and joined a militia.

I plan on two more playtests, one in person and one on the Discord. Meanwhile, the Kickstarter for the second adventure, Sunny Days and Rain is in the works.

Critique My Encounter

I am working on a number of smaller encounters, meant to be playable in one session, for my setting Criminal Spirits. The first one I've finished is attached. I'd like to ask for opinions and advice on the format I've decided on for these, as well as the adventure itself.

There are some limitations. The point of the format is that every adventure will fit into a single page and I'm not going to be budging from that. I also am not willing to reduce the text size any further than it is, so word count is very limited. Please consider that when making suggestions. The frame and colors are placeholders to show how it will be laid out and preserve space for what be hopefully be artwork and actual visual design in the future if this ever gets crowdfunded.
