☀️ Summer Writing Goals ☀️

Hello everyone! Hope you’re all doing well.

With summer quickly approaching, I thought it might be fun to check in on everyone’s writing goals and plans.

A few questions to get the conversation going:

• What stories are you currently working on that you want to finish or make progress on this summer?

• What parts of your writing craft are you focusing on improving right now?

• Are there any new fandoms you’re thinking about writing in for the first time?

• Any old fandoms you’re planning to return to?

• Are you writing any new characters or OCs lately?

• Any new ships or pairings you’re exploring in your stories?

• Is there a story idea currently burning a hole in your pocket that you really want to write?

• Do you have any summer-themed scenes, chapters, or ideas you’re hoping to work on?

Feel free to answer one question or all of them.

This thread is just for fun, so please be respectful and kind to each other.

Have a great day and happy writing! 🌻

Lana helped motivate an IRL student 🎒

I don't think anyone will appreciate this moment more than this sub. My OC made an IRL impact.

Today was the first day for a new student joining my class (we’ll call her “A” and I don't know why she started on a wednesday). “A” is enrolled in our summer program, but her parents wanted her to start a few weeks early to get her used to the school. She was shy, as most 5-year-olds are in a new environment, so I sat down with her to learn more about her interests. When she mentioned that she liked mermaids, I knew it was Lana's time to shine. Conversation went more or less like this:

Me: "I know a mermaid. Her name is Lana. We talk every day"

A: *visibly excited* "No way! I thought mermaids weren't real"

Me: "Do you want to see her?" *shows "A" the Lana art on my phone*

A: "That's a drawing, not a picture"

Me: "Lana doesn't like cameras" (a fact that's also canon in the story)

A: "Can I meet her?"

Me: "Maybe when you're older, but I want to check how you are doing. I know being in a new place can be scary. But I promise, my class is safe and everyone is nice. Lana enjoys school, and I would love to tell her that you had a fun first day"

A: *Slowly nods* "I'll make Lana happy"

It wasn't perfect by any means, but "A" made more of an effort to interact with the other children and do the activities, which as a teacher was amazing to see. But now I need to explain to her mom why she told me "tell Lana I tried my best" when she got picked up.

The point is, your characters have a chance to make a difference off the page as well as on, so never stop working on them.

Show Us Your Best Character Moments

Two days ago, I did action. Yesterday, I did romance.

So today, it only feels right to focus on the moments that make a character feel like themselves.

Every fandom has those scenes where a character’s whole heart shows through: the choice they make when no one is watching, the line they refuse to cross, the mistake they finally admit, the kindness they try to hide, the anger that reveals what they care about, the quiet moment after a loss, the joke that says more than a speech, or the decision that shows exactly who they are.

So let’s show them off.

For this activity, share one of your favorite character moments from your own writing.

Rules:

• Keep the excerpt between 200 and 500 words.
• Start with your fandom name in bold.
• Add a tiny bit of context if needed, but keep it short.
• A character moment can be anything that reveals who someone is: courage, fear, grief, loyalty, humor, growth, regret, pride, vulnerability, mercy, anger, sacrifice, stubbornness, tenderness, or a hard choice.
• Please mark major spoilers if the excerpt gives away something huge.
• Only give critique if the writer asks for it. Otherwise, this is for hype, appreciation, and character love.
• Use spoilers for NSFW material.

Suggested format:

Fandom: Name
Character: Name
Scene Type: Growth / grief / loyalty / humor / courage / vulnerability / hard choice / etc.
Context: One or two sentences

Excerpt:
200–500 words

Optional: What part of this moment do you think shows the character best?

Let’s see the scenes where your characters stop being just names on a page and become people. 🕯️✨

Share Your Best Romantic Scene Excerpt!

I did action yesterday, so following it up with romance only feels right.

Every fandom has those moments where the noise drops away: the almost-confession, the first kiss, the dance, the quiet hand-hold, the “I came back for you,” the long-awaited admission, the married couple being soft, the enemies finally lowering their guard, or the one look that says more than a whole speech.

So let’s show them off.

For this activity, share one of your favorite romantic excerpts from your own writing.

Rules:

• Keep the excerpt between 200 and 500 words.

• Start with your fandom name in bold.

• Add a tiny bit of context if needed, but keep it short.

• Romance can mean anything heartfelt: first meetings, confessions, kisses, yearning, banter, domestic tenderness, dancing, reunions, quiet devotion, jealousy, proposals, or “these two idiots are finally honest” scenes.

• Please mark major spoilers if the excerpt gives away something huge.

• Only give critique if the writer asks for it. Otherwise, this is for hype, appreciation, and soft scene sharing.

• Use spoilers for nsfw stuff

Suggested format:

Fandom: Name

Scene Type: Confession / first kiss / domestic fluff / reunion / slow burn payoff / etc.

Context: One or two sentences

Excerpt:
200–500 words

Optional: What part of the scene are you proudest of?

Let’s see the moments where your characters stop dodging their feelings and the story lights the lanterns. 🕯️💕

Fic Page Tango

The Cell Block Tango from Chicago is one of the most iconic songs in all of Broadway! And because of how iconic it is, there have been animatics and even parodies of the song. Which gave me the idea to put our own fanfic characters, both canon and OC, in the same scenario.

How?

We make our own verses for them, of course! You just describe a scenario from their perspective on a murder, attempted murder, or maybe even accused of a murder they didn't commit, in the style of the Cell Block Tango, with a word to represent the case, and a quip at the end about the murder. Bonus points if it's actually styled like one of the six cases presented in the song. And no worries if you don't know or forgot, because here's the lyrics to the Cell Block Tango right here.

And now, the many merry murderers of the Fanfiction Exchange county jail in their rendition of the Cell Block Tango!

Sibling Exchange

SIBLINGS! Love 'em, hate 'em, throw grapes at 'em when they get their head stuck in a fence (or maybe that was just me?)... today it's time to celebrate 'em.

If your fic features siblings, it's time to throw it in this exchange. If a fictional sibling has passed, it's included in this exchange too.

To enter, you may submit up to 2 links and in return you must read and review 2 chapters/one-shots by different authors.

Please include in your entry: Title/Link, Fandom, Rating, Word Count, Summary, Warnings (use spoiler for NSFW or triggering content), and a Review Counter (0/2).

Entry Deadline: Thursday, May 21st, 5 PM CST

Review Deadline: Monday, May 25th, 5 PM CST

Reviews must be genuine, thoughtful, detailed, and a minimum of 50 words about the fic itself, demonstrating that you have actually read the story. Constructive feedback and mentions of being “fandom blind” or “from Reddit” are opt-in only. Only include these if the author has explicitly stated they are welcome.

You should leave your reviews on the works itself (AO3, FFN, or other fanfic sites) then reply to the author’s entry here to let them know, like “K&C” (Kudos and Commented).

Do not delete your entry once you have joined. Have fun!

The Octave Rating Exchange - Part 1: G&T Edition (General Audiences & Teen and Up)

EDIT: CLOSED TO NEW ENTRIES! Happy reading and reviewing!

**

G'day, mates!

(For anyone wondering about the title: an octave is the distance from one musical note to the next with the same name; it spans eight scale steps.)

It's been a hot minute since I hosted one of these, so I decided to bring this back. Welcome to the eighth round of the Ratings Exchange!

Just like the previous seven versions, this RE will be split into two parts, and they'll run the same as before.

Part 1 is specifically for stories and/or chapters rated General Audiences and/or Teen and Up. As always, the ratings will be based on the ratings system on AO3. (Link's there as a refresher; I also know we have some peeps here who post outside of AO3.)

To the exclusively Mature/Explicit writers, don't worry. Your turn in the spotlight is coming. But you're more than welcome to drop by and give people some love if you wish. Love makes the world go round.

I said "stories and/or chapters" because I'm also allowing chapters from a Mature/Explicit story that meets the criteria for General Audiences/Teen and Up. We've all been there; writing a story predominantly G or T but having to bump up the rating because of one NSFW chapter/scene.

The rules are pretty simple. Everyone can submit a maximum of two (2) stories/chapters. You can submit any of the following combinations:

  • 1 General Audiences story/chapter and 1 Teen and Up story/chapter
  • 2 General Audiences stories/chapters
  • 2 Teen and Up stories/chapters

Your submissions must include the required information - link, fandom, rating, tags, warnings, etc. NSFW/triggering tags/warnings need to be spoilered.

Due to the nature of this RE, unrated stories (i.e. stories set to Not Rated on AO3) will not be allowed. If your story is tagged 'Rating May Change', you're allowed to submit it if it's G or T at the time of this RE.

Same rules apply to works outside AO3.

Participants will have to review two (2) authors. At least one (1) story by each.

Reviews should be at least 50 words (not including quotes from the fic). ConCrit, fandom blind and/or 'from Reddit' are opt-in only. Only include these if the author explicitly states it's okay.

Same deadlines as always from me: 48 hours to enter, one week to complete reviews. Submissions will close Wednesday May 20 6pm AEST. Reviews will be due Wednesday May 27 6pm AEST. Reminders will be sent out 48 hours before the deadline.

To recap:

  • This is the G&T round of the Ratings Exchange - stories rated General Audiences and/or Teen and Up. Chapters from Mature/Explicit stories that meet the criteria are welcome. Not Rated submissions are not allowed.
  • Participants can submit up to two (2) stories and must review at least one (1) story by two (2) separate authors.
  • Submissions close Wednesday May 20 6pm AEST - reviews are due Wednesday May 27 6pm AEST.

But above all, have fun and happy reading and reviewing!

Meet my OC 👥

Does anyone else never tire of showing off their OC? After all of the endless hours we've spent bringing them to life, they deserve to be known and enjoyed by others. In my opinion, the more chances to do that, the better!

Like most of these kind of activities, have them answer a quick survey to introduce themselves, along with any other questions posted for them in the comments. (Bonus points if you add a picture so we can get a visualization of who we're meeting).

You may do multiple characters if you want, just make each one its own post so there's no confusion.

Fandom:

What is your name? Do you have a nickname?

How old are you?

Who is in your family? (parents, siblings, pets)

What is your favorite/least favorite memory?

Do you have any powers/abilities?

What are your hobbies? How do you spend your free time?

Do you have a favorite possession?

What are your best/worst traits?

Are you spontaneous or a planner?

What makes you angry?

What would you change about your world?

Are you in a romantic relationship? Do you have a crush?

At the moment, what is your most pressing problem?

At the moment, what are you happiest about?

(Optional in the comments) "What else do you want to know about me?"

One Word Relationships-Excerpt Challenge

Hello everyone! Hope you're having a good day.

For this excerpt challenge, we’re focusing on relationship dynamics — the kinds of single words that describe how characters relate to each other.

Rules

  1. Post up to three separate comments, each with one relationship word.

Examples: rival, mentor, sibling, partner, stranger, witness, guardian, enemy, ally.

  1. Reply to others with an excerpt that fits the relationship.

You can use an existing work or write something new.

Around 100–400 words is a good guideline, but not a hard rule.

You don’t need to state the word in the excerpt — let the dynamic show through naturally.

  1. Please mark NSFW content as spoilered.

  2. Make sure to comment on other entries and share the love.

Be respectful, have fun, and enjoy reading what everyone creates.

Elevator Pitch

Need a summary for your fic, need to bust writer's block, or just want to gush about your story? This is the place for you! An elevator pitch is 1 minute/100 words (or thereabouts) summary that introduces your story; it's so short and concise that it can be said and done in one elevator ride, hence the name. Come write one for your fic!

Sell Your Fandom: Pitch Why Yours Rules 💖

Hey everyone!

Since we all write for wildly different fandoms, and there’s no single “universal” one everyone knows, I thought it would be fun and useful to do a “Sell Your Fandom” thread.

The rules are simple:

Sell us on your fandom like it’s the best thing since sliced bread.

Tell us:

• What makes it so addictive that you keep coming back to write for it?

• The characters, world-building, dynamics, vibes, ships, lore, or whatever lights you up.

• Drop videos, trailers, clips, fanart, GIFs, screenshots, or anything that captures the magic.

This way, we can all get a better feel for the fandoms we’re reading about in each other’s fics and maybe even discover new ones to check out!

How to participate:

Just reply to this thread! Start with your fandom name in bold so it’s easy to spot.

Example format, feel free to copy and tweak:

Fandom: [Name]

Why I’m obsessed:

Key characters / dynamics I love:

Media that sells it perfectly: [links or embedded images/videos]

Bonus: One-sentence pitch that would make someone click “read” on your fics.

Let’s hype each other up and spread the fandom love! 💕

What fandom are you selling today?

Fanfiction Diversity Fest - Identity and Truth

G'day, mates!

By the way, shoutout to the amazing u/tsuki_anne for the beautiful poster.

We are so excited to announce the return of the massively successful Fandom Diversity Fest! This is an opportunity for us to showcase the uniqueness and diversity of fandoms in our sub!

Please read the post in its entirety as the rules for this fest and the subsequent exchange are different than most of the fests/exchanges we do on the sub.

This year's theme is...

Identity and Truth

This means your fic must be on the theme of identity and include the word "truth" or some variation like "truthful". You do not need to include the word "identity". All fandoms, ships, ratings, genres and tags are welcome, and you can include any tropes you would like. This fest is also open to OG works as well!

Conditions:

  • This fest is 18+ because of the different kind of reading requirement.
  • All participants will write a fic on the theme that is 2500 words or less. The fic must be written specifically for this fest and cannot be an already published work. Once again, your fic may be at maximum 2500 words. There are no exceptions to this rule due to the increased reading requirement for the exchange.
  • This fest is only open to active members of the sub. In order to be considered active, you must have participated in at least two review exchanges to participate. (Yes, we do check.) If you're not an active member before the deadline to sign up, your sign up will not be accepted.
  • By participating, you agree to take part in a special fest review exchange after all the expected works are posted to the collection when the deadline for writing passes. This exchange will have a much longer deadline than usual, because we will review all the other posted works (participants will be able to opt out of a set number of works for any reason). If you submit your work, but do not participate in the exchange afterwards, you agree that your work will be removed from the collection.
  • If the group is too large for everyone to feasibly read everyone's fics during the time limit, we may split everyone into smaller groups.

Deadlines (all deadlines are 11:59pm EST):

Sunday June 14th is the last day for sign-ups

Friday July 31st is the last day for submitting your work

i.e. you have just under a month to sign up and just over six weeks from the signup deadline to write and post your fic. The collection will be opened on AO3 at a later date.

In the days following July 31st, a fest RE will be opened. The review deadline will be at least one month, depending on the number of submissions.

Sign Up Here. For any fields where you're uncertain, just put TBD. The only compulsory ones at the moment are the Reddit and AO3 usernames. If you can't access Google Sheets, send us a modmail and we'll add you. The sheet will ask for the following details: Reddit Username, AO3 Username, Fandom (or OG), Pairing (If Applicable), Genre (Optional), Status.

You can also sign up to be a beta or brainstorming buddy here. In case you can't participate, this would be a great way to still support your fellow community members. Of course, even if you do participate, you can still offer to be a beta or brainstorm buddy.

Just a note to please share content warnings with your beta before coming to an agreement.

Thanks for giving this post your attention, and happy writing, everyone!

Long Deadline Profile Exchange 🦋🧭

Happy Friday everyone, and welcome to the Long Deadline Profile Exchange! It's time to explore some profiles! 🧭🕵️

What's the Long Deadline Profile Exchange?

This is a subreddit event where everyone posts their AO3 (or FFN, etc.) profile with some information about the sorts of stories they write. Then, participants look through the available profiles, and read and leave comments on stories (one-shots or a chapter of a longer fic) by authors who catch their fancy. Leaving a kudos would be nice too!

DEADLINE FOR ENTRY is Sunday 17th May, 10pm BST (UTC+1)

DEADLINE FOR COMPLETION is Saturday 23rd May, 10pm BST (UTC+1)

Here's a time zone converter for anyone who needs it.

What Are the Rules?

Post your profile link with a short summary of the kinds of stories one might find there (fandom, genre, rating, etc.). Please spoiler anything triggering or NSFW.

Once you enter, you will have to review at least 4 stories/chapters from 4 different profiles (one from each).

Please include in your submission a counter such as, "Reviewed 0/4" so we can keep track of the number of reviews you've done. There's no need to also note which stories or authors you have reviewed.

After you've left a comment, reply to their post on here to let them know. For anyone new, 'K&C' in a reply stands for 'Kudos and Comment'.

Your reviews should be thoughtful. The writer should be able to tell that you read the story. Say what you like about the story. Did something crack you up? Were you brought to tears? Did you have a favourite part? TELL THEM ABOUT IT! At least 50 words per review. ConCrit, stating you are "fandom blind" and/or "from Reddit" are opt-in only.

Please only reply to an individual entry when you've read their fic or if you want to ask a question. Also, please refrain from adding GIFs and images to replies as they are not relevant to whether you've reviewed a fic. We're happy that you're excited about reading, but unfortunately these make it hard for users (and mods!) to navigate the thread.

If possible, it would be awesome if everyone read at least one person who is new to them.

If you enter the exchange, please do not delete your entry. You must complete the required reviews for the exchange. Please talk to the mods if something comes up and you have concerns about doing something in a timely manner.

But above all, have fun and happy reading and reviewing!

🧭OG-Fest Review Exchange🧭

THIS EXCHANGE IS ONLY FOR THOSE WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE OG-FEST WRITING EVENT.

To join, your fic must have been written for this event and added to the collection. You have until May 18th 11:59 pm EDT to add your fic and post your entry here.

Deadline for reviews: May 30th 11:59 pm EDT

In your entry, include: Title (link), Rating, Genre (optional), Summary, Word Count, Content Warnings (please spoiler NSFW and/or triggering content), and your review counter (0/6)

As per Rule 8, reviews must be genuine, thoughtful, detailed, and at least 50 words about the fic itself, clearly showing you’ve read it. Concrit (constructive criticism) and/or mentioning that you’re “fandom blind” or “from Reddit” are opt-in only, don’t include them unless the author says it’s okay.

If you join, do not delete your entry. If anything comes up, please reach out to the mods via modmail.

Happy reviewing!! 💟

Shipping the characters

Hey there, everyone! Hope you had a good friday!

We all write for characters we love, as well as ships we enjoy quite a lot, often shipping the characters, wether with other canon characters, our ocs, our ourself

So for this activity, let's do what fandoms do best and give them more ships! For this purpose, comment who's your character or characters (try to keep it around 4 or so), from what fandoms are they from, wether they're canon or oc, what do they want in a partner , both in personality and physically, and if you they any preferences (example: you prefer to be shipped only with women) Then, go answer other people's comments and give the characters someonme to ship them with! Can be one of your ocs or a canon character! And feel free to reply in character!

Since there's a chance the person might not know which character you are referring too, pictures and gifs of them are allowed! In the case of book characters that don't have an adaptation, make sure to credit the artist if you are using a fanart!
