GKS Interview Tip: Speak slowly — nervousness makes you rush and lose clarity

I wanted to share a simple but important tip about the GKS interview that often gets overlooked:

Speak slowly and clearly.

When applicants get nervous, they tend to speak faster without realizing it. This is especially common in the GKS interview because:

  • You usually only have about 5 minutes per interview.
  • The more nervous you feel, the faster you try to explain everything.
  • As a result, your tone gets higher and your speed increases, making it harder for the interviewers to fully understand what you're saying.

Even if your content is good, if the interviewers can’t clearly follow your answers, it weakens the overall impression.

Why this matters:
Interviewers are not just evaluating your answers — they’re also evaluating how clearly and calmly you can communicate under pressure. Speaking too fast can make you sound less confident and harder to understand.

Practical advice:

  • Be aware of your speaking pace before the interview.
  • Practice answering common questions at a slightly slower speed than usual.
  • If you feel yourself speeding up during the interview, consciously slow down. It’s better to say less but clearly than to rush through everything.
  • Remember: You don’t need to say everything in one breath. Pausing briefly is okay and often sounds more professional.

This is a small habit, but it can make a noticeable difference in how well your answers come across.

Has anyone who already had their interview noticed themselves speaking faster due to nervousness? Or do you have any techniques you use to stay calm and speak at a steady pace?

Would love to hear your experiences.

PS: I used AI to refine the wording (because I'm not a native speaker of English), but the content is based on my own experience. I worked in a Korean university’s international relations team for 7 years, so I’m familiar with how these matters are usually handled.

GKS And YONSEI

Hi!

So, I graduate in December, but I'm wanting to apply to Yonsei for Business Management (Applying from the U.S) . I know the GKS won't be applicable to the UIC, but I had a few questions regarding the scholarship and college..

1.) The required language training: Will they determine where I take my language courses based off of my Korean TOPIK level? Will I be taking my courses at Yonsei? (I saw a post that said whichever college you apply to if you get accepted is where you study the language..)

2.) If I get accepted for the GKS, do I automatically get accepted into Yonsei or do I also have to apply to Yonsei?

3.) Will I take my 1 year Korean language course when the Spring semester starts and I'll essentialy spend 1 year learning only the language?

4.) What's the difference between the GKS-G and GKS-U?

These might be dumb questions, but I don't have a personal college advisor so I hope I can get some answers here!

IELTS ISSUE.......

IELTS It's not available in my city , and I really wanna apply for the GKS scholarship to have a chance to be a Yonsei undergraduate student, but they require an IELTS test? What should I do? Even though my English is really good.....

My Marks in 9 grade : 93% In 10th grade : 86%
in 11th grade :80% cause basically I didn't study in any exams this year😅 In this last year of high school, I am aiming for above 90+ % I have done so many activities in school , will my chance be good if I applied without the IELTS test and replaced it with Doulingo?

Applicants who submitted two recommendations in the past

Hey guys! Just looking for insights here. If you submitted two recommendations, how did you do it? Did you put both of them on the recommendation letter section or did you put one as a recommendation and the other as an additional document at the end?

certificate of expected graduation.

hi! i applied for the GKS through the university track and after the interview i passed to the (NIIED) second round. however, i’m overthinking a lot and i’m anxious about one thing.

i submitted a certificate of expected graduation from my current university, but it didn’t include the exact expected graduation date. it only stated that i’m expected to graduate in the academic year 2025/2026. could this become a problem for NIIED?

has anyone had a similar experience before and got accepted? i’d really appreciate hearing from other applicants, i’m stressing about it a lot right now. thanks!

Regarding persona statement

Hi! Just a quick question, how much can I write for the personal statement in GKS U? And for the study plan? I know it's basic but someone told me it is 1 page, and I don't know what that means in terms of amount. Also someone told me it was 2, so idk.

Tysm in advance!

GKS University Track (R&D Program) — Chances after University Recommendation to NIIED? [Pakistan🇵🇰]

Hi everyone, I’m applying from Pakistan 🇵🇰

I wanted to ask about the GKS University Track specifically for the R&D/graduate program.

If a university already selects you after the document screening/interview process and officially recommends your application to NIIED, then what are the chances of getting the final scholarship?

Does NIIED usually reject many candidates even after university recommendation, or is the selection rate relatively high at that stage?

I know it may depend on quotas, nationality, documents, and competition, but I wanted to hear from people who went through the process or know someone who did.

Would really appreciate any experiences or insights. Thanks!!!!

Reference letter

I somehow ended up teaching Korean to the future deputy ambassador of my country in Korea and I was thinking it would probably be a good idea to ask her to write a reference letter for me, to use in my application next year. I am mostly writing this to hear some advice on how and what to ask of her. This would not be the recommendation letter that is required in the application (I will have my professor/department head write that, so he can assess my academic capabilities etc.), I would just put it under additional documents. I sort of just need it as proof that I even taught her tbh, since idk how I would prove it otherwise. So yeah if anyone has any experience with asking something like this, I would appreciate the advice, because I really do not know what this letter would include. She has no way of knowing my academic capabilities and she's not like my boss or anything you know, technically I am the teacher so it's a bit different to other reference letters probably. I'm already feeling awkward about asking lol, so when I do finally ask her I want to have an actual plan of what to say and what I could expect in this sort of letter.

Is it possible to pass Embassy Round 3 without any emails from universities?

Hi everyone, I wanted to ask if anyone has experience or knows anyone who has been in this situation. I noticed that some scholars from 2025 did not have any interviews at all for all three of their chosen universities. Does this mean they didn't receive any emails at all and were just sent acceptance emails at the end of the month? Is that possible? I still haven't been contacted at all so I am a bit worried and I have been seeing a lot of people around me being emailed for extra documents or interview invites.

GKS Embassy Track Interview Tip: Why showing visa knowledge can help build trust

I wanted to share something that came up during a discussion about the GKS Embassy Track interview.

Since the interview is conducted by embassy staff (not professors), they are the ones who regularly handle visa-related matters. Because of this, showing that you have some basic understanding of visa terms and requirements can actually work in your favor.

Why it can help:

When you naturally mention things like:

  • D-2 visa
  • Visa qualifications / requirements
  • Your intention to follow the rules properly

The interviewers may subconsciously think something like:
“She knows the terms. She understands the qualifications. She’s less likely to become an illegal overstayer.”

It subtly signals that you are responsible and have done some homework about what studying in Korea actually entails from a legal perspective.

How to bring it up naturally:

You don’t need to force it. You can mention it when talking about:

  • Your motivation to study in Korea
  • Your long-term plans after graduation
  • Why you are committed to returning to your home country

For example:
“Since my goal is to contribute to [your field] in my home country after graduation, I understand the importance of complying with the D-2 visa conditions and returning after completing my studies.”

Important note:

  • Don’t overdo it or sound like you’re just trying to impress them with legal terms.
  • Keep it natural and brief. The goal is to show awareness, not to lecture them about visa rules.

Has anyone who already had their Embassy Track interview mentioned visa-related topics? Or do you think it’s better to avoid it completely?

Would love to hear different opinions on this.
