Fitzcarraldo LP Original Release

Does anyone know where to find it? I’ve read that some songs were reworked for the more common reissue but would love to hear it.

Same for the deluxe versions of Another Love Song, Dabce the Devil and The Cost.

Heyday - The Mic Christopher Story (movie on Tubi)

Glen was a big part of Mic’s life and the film hits even harder now. I watched this again tonight as I try to come to terms with Glen’s passing. It may have been a massive mistake, but I think it helped. Too soon to tell. I just wanted to make sure people knew this was available and free to watch.

Also from here without ads I think: Fawesome.tv

Paying My Way - picking pattern?

Hi all,

I've just discovered this track, and I am really enjoying hearing a more bluesy side to Glen's vocals.

I've been tinkering with Falling Slowly, and I'm wondering whether it's the same picking pattern but in G, rather than C?

Would be very grateful for any intel.

Thanks,

Casey

Personal live footage

I'm actually someone that hates it when people get their phones out during concerts or gigs but I have to admit that I'm using the personal footage of Mr Hansard on YouTube to get through this period.

I've seen him 4 times in London.

I'm still not over his death and I think the personal footage is really helping me in some way.

Strengths to all.

Glasgow Barras gig…

I somehow ended up being asked to get Glen a pint (I am Lou) and then he gave me a couple of records towards the end of the night. I looked for ages after the gig to see if anyone had captured the moment on social media but could never find anything.

Just been sent this and it made me so happy to see it, but so sad all over again.

How come The Frames never released another album after The Cost?

Did Glen's focus just shift to Swell Season and his solo career? Had they run their course in the studio?

'Bird of Sorrow' is a masterpiece.

Ashamed to say I've only started listening to Glen's music properly since his untimely passing. As an Irishman, I knew of him, of course, but nothing outside of the two films and 'Falling Slowly'. But wow, what a songwriter and performer. Full of passion and authenticity. 'Bird of Sorrow' is genuinely one of the best-written songs I've ever heard. "You've bet your joys on all tomorrows". So depressingly beautiful. Rest easy, Glen. 💚

New fan

Sorry for the long post, just want to get this off my chest. Sadly I was not very familiar with Glen’s music before he died. I love the show House MD and the scene in season 6 where Seven Day Mile plays has stuck with me for a long time. I adored that song and that scene was what introduced me to The Frames. I found Star Star from the same album and it became one of my favorite songs to listen to while driving at night; it’s like a warm blanket. I found Falling Slowly from it being one of their most popular songs on Spotify. I remember being struck by the raw emotion of it; it’s a song you just feel in your chest and the pit of your stomach. Later someone recommended Fool’s Game which I also loved. Glen was one of those musicians I always planned to get more into because I loved the few songs I had heard, but somehow I just never got around to doing a deep dive. Now I feel absolutely gutted that I didn’t get more into his music earlier.

I spent the day after he died watching his performances on YouTube and I was stunned at how unbelievably good he was. His performances are so soulful, he puts so much emotion behind every note, it’s just gut-wrenching and beautiful. I don’t think I’ve ever been so moved by a live performance in the same way. I watched the National Library of Ireland performance and started crying listening to Bird of Sorrow. You know that feeling of incredulity and excitement when you discover an artist and you just know they’re going to become a new favorite? It’s a bit like falling in love I suppose. It’s been so bittersweet to have that feeling with every new song I’ve found and realize he’ll end up being one of my favorite artists and I’ll never get to see him live. And of course his performances with Markéta are stunning. The way they look at each other and the way their voices blend together is so beautiful. It’s obvious from the first notes they were musical soulmates. I watched Once a few days ago and it was just as touching as everyone said. I love playing music more than anything but sometimes I go through phases where I don’t feel motivated and I always know a song is special when I want to start playing again. Listening to Glen and Markéta immediately made me want to sit down at the piano (and then just strum the hell out of my guitar trying to learn Say It To Me Now).

It hurts that someone who gave so much of himself through music, charity, joy, and kindness could have such a tragic end. He should have had more time with his wife and son. I’m thankful and excited that I have many hours of more songs, performances and interviews to discover and that he lives on through his art, but I feel crushed that I’ll never get to see him perform and experience that magic in person. It’s strange to grieve a person I never knew but I think it’s a testament to his talent as an artist that he could connect so well with an audience.

I haven’t felt this sad about a stranger’s death since Scott Hutchison. I had already been a huge Frightened Rabbit fan when Scott died and following the news of his disappearance and when his body was found was horrible. I’d planned to go to a Frightened Rabbit show but had a conflict and a few months later he was dead. Not going to that show is one of my biggest regrets and Glen’s death has brought back a lot of those feelings because I know I’ve missed something incredibly special. I have a lot of sympathy for long term Glen fans and just want to send everyone a big hug and say thank you for the music, Glen.

I hope you’re all ok

Because I’m really not. I’m of an age where I remember the Commitments and how big that was. I saw it. Liked it. Bought the soundtrack. I liked the frames even though they really didn’t grab me initially. Loved Once and I’ve enjoyed Glen’s work ever since but not a day one buy for me and I never saw him when he came through town. So, I cannot for the life of me work out why his passing has completely knocked me for six. It feels like grief but it makes no sense. So, if I’m feeling like this I can’t even imagine how his true fans are feeling. I hope you’re all ok and taking care of yourselves.

When Your Mind's Made Up by Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová (tribute cover song I made)

I bought Set List by The Frames in 2004 when I was 22. I absolutely loved the album. I was so excited to study abroad in Ireland (being from Minnesota) and was able to do so in 2005. That same magical year The Frames played The 400 Bar in Minneapolis, and I was there. I remember being so excited I yelled: "Revelate!" (like a tipsy eejit) and Glen made a joke about how they would obviously play Revelate so it was a wasted request. He maneuvered between tear-inducing songs and then having a craic. His skill with scéal was unmatched.

The 400 Bar offered little room to evade enthusiastic fans, so when Glen hopped off the stage I offered to buy him a pint (although I was still a broke college student). Much to my friend and my surprise, he obliged, and drank with us, telling stories, laughing heartily, and generally endearing himself to us for the rest of our lives.

Following his career closely after that (The Frames, The Swell Season, standing and cheering when Once won the Oscar, the Broadway show, etc.) I was privileged to see him live again on larger stages with far less access to sharing a pint with him.

I am so sad that he died and have not come to a place of acceptance. I have not been able to watch the tributes yet. This is what I have been working on since I heard of his death. Trying to cover one of my favorite songs of his. I am so grateful to be Irish and to have had his wonderful music in my life. I am so sad for his wife and child whom I heard him speak of so lovingly recently in different interviews. Although I am in America at the moment, my heart is in Ireland. Rest in Peace, Glen.

Grief is a funny thing

At first the news of his death felt like an immediate pang of grief and pain, and sickness

Then it subsided after watching the funeral, I felt I’d moved some pain along

Today it strikes again, profound sadness. I just hope he didn’t suffer. Trying not to think about that.

You were loved. So loved.

It’s very weird having pseudo-relationships with a musician that you considered a friend.

Missing you, Glen.
