Hair System Before a Hair Transplant – Good Idea or Bad Idea?

Hey everyone! I’m thinking about getting a hair system (a wig) before I commit to a hair transplant. My plan is to do the transplant eventually, but I want to try the wig first to see how I’d look and feel. While wearing the wig during this time, I’m also considering treating my hair. I have a question—for those who used clip-on hair systems (attached on the sides)—did it affect your natural hair? Did you notice thinning or breakage? I really want to give it a go before the transplant, and I hope to use this time to care for my hair as well. I’d love to hear your honest experiences and advice. Thanks a lot!

Baldness cult

Hello all.

I’m a lady and I’m not entirely aware of all the treatments for hair loss available to men. Just going from popular consensus, people always try to make hair systems out to be undignified. I’m scrolling through this sub and I’m kind of surprised at how great you all look. I wouldn’t be able to tell nearly any of you guys don’t have natural hair.

Given I ended up here because I was looking up critiques on how r/bald seems to be some type of cult where men tell other men they look great bald even when they don’t, seeing just how good the systems look made me wonder about this cult-like behavior even further. Is this just some sort of collective cope? Do they want everyone else to be bald so they can feel better about themselves?

Obviously I don’t speak for other women, but I see nothing wrong with a man wearing a system and it seems to me like most people who criticize them are bald men who aggressively want other guys to just grow a beard and shave it off. Either that or people who have this mental image of really bad toupees, which judging by people here I see is far from the truth.

So why do you think there is such fervor in mostly millennial/gen X males trying to push other guys into that damn bald bearded look?

Is this a normal amount of shedding?

I’ve had this system for about a month and a half, it’s just a front piece, but I’m getting a little concerned as it looks like it’s lost a lot of hair up front, is this normal?

My guide to minimizing shedding & maintaining softness and silkiness

Hey guys, long time system wearer here.

For the longest time, i was dealing with really bad shedding, and my system would also become just crunchy and so dry and I could never figure out how to avoid both issues.

Its only in the past six months or so, that I've been able to solve both issues and I've never been happier with my system.

This is after many times of thinking I had found a product that would work to soften my system, and it would feel really good until it completely dried, and once that moisture was totally gone, my system just dried up super bad.

Lets talk first, about shedding. I used to think the main reason my system shedded so bad was because I got product into the poly that would loosen up the hairs, and while that might be a small part, ive found that truthfully, the main thing causing the shedding is: sleeping in the system without any protection.

You NEED a dew rag or a silk cap if youre gonna sleep with your system, point blank period. I actually like to use both a dew rag and silk pillow cases, to completely minimize friction. As you move in your sleep, it causes the hairs to get pulled out of the base, and then when you comb, or wash your hair, since the hair has been loosened so much from sleeping, the hair will just pull out even more and eventually come out all the way. Used to drive me crazy because I'd get a beautiful haircut and then a month or two down the line, the hair would be completely uneven on the ends and especially when my hair blew in the wind, it just looked super ratty and felt terrible against my face.

Now that I sleep with a dew rag and silk pillow cases, I haven't seen a single hair come up when I'm doing my hair. I used to dread doing maintenence on my hair because washing it and conditioning it and combing it would always end up with me losing a ton of hair, that doesn't happen anymore, I can even brush my hair and it stays nice and solid in the base, and I would have never dared to brush it before, would have lost so much hair.

Now let's talk about softness and shine. The dew rag comes in really handy here as well, I start out with a treatment, there are tons of good options, redken acidic bonding treatment is a great one, lately I'm using bond bar lammelar water rinse, which is only ten bucks from Sally beauty. I spray it onto my hands and then spread it over the top of the hair, and then take a comb to distribute the product throughout the hair, i try not to lather any slick products into the system because it does contribute to the hairs loosening up. Once it's evenly distributed, i will put the dew rag onto the hair so it's completely covered and then tie it, and just let it cook for a good 10 to 20 minutes, you can go longer if you want, can't hurt it, and if your system is super dry, might not hurt to go for half an hour.

Once that's done, I gently rinse the system out, meaning I dont put the water on full blast, helps to avoid any potential tangles, although when you are keeping your system soft and silky, tangles become way less of an issue.

Once I have that product rinsed out, I will take a lightweight oil, like jojoba oil, and spread some on my hands and repeat the process, spreading the oil on top of the hair and then combing it through, then put the dew rag on, put it on pretty tight.

I like to let the oil really really just sit and penetrate into the hair, theres really not a time limit.

Once you're done with that, gently rinse the hair, and then, take your favorite leave in conditioner, and repeat the same process, im using its a 10 miracle leave in, you don't need a lot, for any of the products actually. After you apply the leave in, do the dew rag again for about ten minutes or so, and when you take it off, the hair is going to be SO soft and silky, and it will actually stay that way when it totally dries.

The dew rag is the real hero here, it really helps to keep the hair wet throughout the process and helps to lock in the different products we are using. Ive never been happier with my hair, its so shiny and feels so luscious, I have to stop myself from constantly running my fingers through it.

How to apply adhesive tape to a hair system.

Pay close attention to the details, especially the sides. When applying the tape, do so carefully and attentively, always pressing down firmly to ensure a secure hold.Any questions, send me DM. #hairsystem #wig #hairraplacement

HS with SMP

Hey everyone !

I recently had SMP done, including my temples, as you can see in the first picture. After wearing a hair system for about 4 months, I decided to try SMP.

Even though I’m really happy with the result, I’m thinking about going back to a hair system to see which look I prefer.

The third picture shows what I looked like with a hair system before getting SMP.

My concern is that, since my temples are now filled in with SMP, I’m not sure whether the hair system and my bio hair will blend naturally and completely cover the pigmentation.

Has anyone here combined temple SMP with a hair system?
Does it blend seamlessly, or does the SMP become noticeable?

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences or seeing any photos if you’ve been in a similar situation.

How do you guys hide french lace mesh at hairline.

I'm using french lace with ultrahold, The lace is slightly lighter than my skin. Upon close inspection you can see the grid. And even if you miss a tiny spot or it didn't stick properly the whole edge is clearly shines as white. I'm always insecure, worrying about front edge lifting and seeing it every 3-4 hours. How you guys manage it.

Swapping systems daily

I'm planning on starting swimming daily and was hoping to put my shitty older system on for swimming then swapping back to my new system (for longevity reasons)

Just wondered how feasible this is? I currently glue and reinstall every week or so, I'm guessing I'll have to swap to a daily tape but just wondered if these are strong enough for swimming, and if the system comes off easy enough afterwards to reswap?

Thanks all.

Product Recommendations Please

Main question: looking for recommended products to keep it looking soft and healthy. One product I’ve seen mentioned on here a few times is Remy Soft Blue Max Protective Sealer - has anyone tried this?

I’m looking for recommendations for shampoos, leave in conditioner, styling products etc.

I’m currently using a tiny bit of Moroccanoil Texture Clay.

Also very happy for any kind and constructive feedback so I can continue to improve.

———

System: TopUnique, Superfine Swiss Lace, 70% density, colour #2.

———

I’ve been wearing systems for 9-10 years now. I’ve used TopLace, LordHair, Lavivid, Dylan’s Wig Closet, and Hairvivi.

LordHair has probably been my least favourite because of the shedding.

The best hairline was probably Lavivid but even their 80% density felt far too thick and I had to thin it out like crazy.

I’ve been cutting and applying my own systems since day one from watching YouTube videos mainly because of the cost. Made loads of mistakes and I cringe thinking about how bad some of the systems must have looked. I’ve got better but it takes me ages to cut and install - we’re talking a full day. I have been tempted recently to try a salon, there have been two really good ones I’ve seen on here, but again it’s expensive and knowing me I’d be unhappy with the result.

This is my first 70% density system, sounds very low but this is the first system I’ve worn where the amount of “poof” has actually been just right. The only thinning I’ve done this time was on the ends to blend the system.

As my sides are really fine, I use hair powder in a little stamper thing like this one HERE.

Even after so many years using hair systems, I’ve not been successful in making them last very long so this time I’m trying things a little differently with products etc.

Advice on Options: having my cake and eating it too?

Hi, I am M24. I've been on minoxidil and only minoxidil (no finasteride) for a bit, and its been okay I guess, its not getting worse, it definitely looks worse if i grow it out a bit too long, so I keep it buzzed usually, and I've grown to like the feeling of it being buzzed, especially for sports as I play football on the weekends, but also just for general every day. I want to look nice sometimes though, have my old hairstyles from a few years ago when I grew my hair out a bit, maybe for some pictures or on some dates. I was wondering what are my options are if I wanted something that I can just put on and take off, while still keeping my head buzzed rather than bald, doing my little bit of research I found that I either shave the top part and glue a hair system on, which is a bit too permanent, or for clip on, I have to grow my hair out which makes my thinning more obvious.

(the style I want would be an undercut so blending in the sides I imagine wouldn't be as necessary)

22 years old, 3 months with a hair system – my honest experience (with photos)

I wanted to share my experience because I rarely see people around my age posting about hair systems. I’m 22 years old, and I’ve been wearing one for about 3 months now.
For context, I started losing my hair pretty young. It affected my confidence more than I wanted to admit, and after thinking about it for a long time, I decided to try a hair system instead of waiting until I was older.

Honestly… it has been a rollercoaster.
The first week was amazing. Looking in the mirror and seeing myself with hair again felt surreal. Nobody around me noticed it was a system. Friends, coworkers, even my barber were surprised only after I told them.
But then came the learning curve.
I’ve made almost every beginner mistake:
Used liquid glue and got adhesive everywhere.
Got glue in the hair itself.
Applied the system crooked.
Had to remove and reattach it multiple times.
Learned that tapes are much easier (at least for me).

Maintenance definitely takes time, and I won’t pretend it’s “maintenance-free.” You have to clean it, style it, and learn what products work. It took me weeks before I felt comfortable doing everything myself.

The good part?
I genuinely feel much more confident. I don’t constantly think about my hair anymore when I’m outside. I wear what I want, go out without a hat, and people simply treat me normally.
Would I recommend a hair system?
If you’re willing to learn and accept the maintenance, yes.

It’s not a miracle solution, but it’s also nowhere near as scary as I thought before getting one.
One thing I don’t see discussed enough is younger guys wearing systems. I always felt like I was “too young” because most people I found online were in their 30s, 40s or older.

So if you’re in your early 20s and considering one, you’re definitely not alone.
Feel free to ask me anything. I’m still learning myself, but after 3 months I’ve already learned a lot.

(The last pic is from April)

4 months in with the System - thoughts?

I got my system 4 months ago. It’s a poly system which I got adjusted in a studio in Germany.
I’ve been so happy with it!

Tell me your thoughts please!

Thinking about a hair system

Hey everyone,
I’m planning to book a consultation at a local private hair system studio soon, and I wanted to get some advice from anyone who has a similar hair type and hair loss pattern as me. The last photo is me at 16 before when the hair line started recessing before the density was lost. I’m 22 now:/

My hair has been genetically thin my whole life, but I started noticeably losing density when I was 16. I’m currently on Minoxidil and Finasteride, but because my baseline was always thin, I’m not expecting miracle regrowth. I’ve come to the realization that a hair system is probably the best route for my overall confidence.

I want something that mimics my natural hair but obviously provides much-needed density on the crown and strengthens my hairline. I would like to keep my hair relatively long on the back and sides.
Style-wise, I plan to wear my hair down with bangs. I want the bangs to be thick enough so it doesn't look like my hair is visibly thinning anymore.

My Questions for You:

  1. For guys with diffuse thinning or lifelong thin hair, what type of base (lace, poly/thin skin, hybrid) has worked best for you?
  2. Did you go with a partial topper or a full system?
  3. What questions should I be asking at my consultation to make sure I get exactly what I want?
Any advice, personal experiences, or knowledge you can drop before I take the plunge would be massively appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Which Type of Hair System is this ?

Hi All
Could someone help me identify the type of hair system I have? I recently got it installed at a salon three weeks ago, but I never asked about the specific type because I was a newbie and just wanted something that felt good. Now, after reading this forum and realizing I need a long-term solution, I’m trying to find a product that matches it on “Superhairpieces.ca.” I’m considering eventually ordering it online and doing a DIY installation.

First attempt at going Solo

So been wearing a salon installed system for 6 weeks. Decided to give a try ordering my own thinskin, cut the base from a template myself, attached and went to my normal hairdresser who attempted her first cut in on a system. She was more nervous that I was.

Here are the results, not bad for a first go im hoping definatley learnt ways to improve for next time.

Dr. Couto quoted me 3000 grafts for NW3 Vertex. Thoughts on this breakdown? Worth it?

Hey guys,

Got my quote from Dr. Juan Couto (Madrid) for an upcoming FUE procedure: 3,000 grafts.

I’m a NW3 Vertex with thick, dark hair. My hair loss is stable on blockers (currently switching to a low-dose topical Dutasteride + Minoxidil to avoid systemic fatigue) and my donor area is solid.

Instead of just blasting the crown, the doctor suggested a full multi-zone layout to touch up everything:

Hairline & Temples: ~1,100 grafts (subtle drop, closing the angles).
Mid-Scalp: ~600 grafts (adding density between native hair).
Crown: ~1,000 grafts (just closing up the swirl, not full blanket coverage).
Sideburns: ~300 grafts (touch-up to clean up the profile view).

Given Couto's reputation and my thick hair type, do you think this full-head approach is worth it? Or should I just focus on one area?

Would love to hear your thoughts on this strategy. Cheers!
