WANT HAIR UK - Liv Harley Street Hospital

My 3,488-graft FUE experience with Want Hair / Liv Harley Street Hospital – what I wish I knew before booking

I’m posting this because I wish I had found a detailed account like this before booking my transplant.

I had a 3,488-graft FUE hair transplant in July 2025, arranged through Want Hair and carried out at Liv Harley Street Hospital / The Harley Street Hospital.

My main concern was my crown. Before booking, I sent photographs and specifically said: “I only need the crown done, brow done two years ago.”

I was also worried about who would actually perform the procedure. Before booking, I specifically asked about the surgeon’s involvement and was told in writing that the surgeon would do the surgical aspects of the transplant.

That reassurance mattered to me.

On the day, a treatment design was produced and 3,488 grafts were recorded. During the procedure I was told they could not fit any more grafts into my crown and that the remaining grafts would therefore be placed further forward to create density.

Three technicians were substantially involved in carrying out the transplant. I do not recall being clearly informed beforehand that this would be the delivery model, being told who they were, or being given information about their qualifications and experience.

I also have photographs taken immediately after leaving the clinic and over the following days, when the recipient sites were still clearly visible. Those photographs provide a contemporaneous record of where the grafts were actually placed.

As the transplant matured, I repeatedly raised concerns about the crown and the developing result. I followed the advice to wait rather than judge the outcome too early.

It is now around 13 months later and I remain extremely dissatisfied with the crown result.

Want Hair’s position has been that I should wait 18 months. However, independent hair-transplant professionals I have consulted have advised me that while some further maturation can occur, the result at around 12 months is generally representative of the eventual outcome. I am now obtaining independent professional assessments in writing regarding the original planning, graft distribution and result.

I made a formal complaint and requested a refund or compensation. Neither Want Hair nor Liv Harley Street Hospital has offered me a refund or compensation.

I have also referred my concerns regarding the doctor involved to the General Medical Council. I’m not suggesting the GMC has made any finding; I have referred the matter so that the appropriate regulator can consider it.

One of the biggest lessons for me has been to independently investigate the people and organisations involved rather than relying mainly on marketing, reviews and impressive before-and-after photographs.

I checked the British Association of Hair Restoration Surgery (BAHRS) membership directory and could not find Want Hair or the doctor who performed my procedure listed as members.

If I were booking again, I would insist on written answers to these questions before paying:

  • Who will actually perform each stage of the procedure?
  • Who will extract the grafts?
  • Who will create the recipient sites?
  • Who will implant the grafts?
  • Will technicians perform substantial parts of the procedure?
  • Who are they and what are their qualifications?
  • How many grafts are actually intended for the area I specifically want treated?
  • What happens if the agreed plan changes during surgery?

This experience has cost me more than the £3,194 treatment price, including travel, recovery, time away from work, and a huge amount of time and stress pursuing the matter afterwards.

I have retained the contract, WhatsApp correspondence, treatment design/clinical record, pre-op photos, immediate post-op photos, current photos and complaint correspondence.

I’m posting this so other people researching Want Hair or Liv Harley Street Hospital know the questions I wish I had asked before booking.

Based on my treatment, the result and the way my concerns have been handled, I would not choose either provider again.

7 months in - great deal too

Hey all, 7 months in on my hair transplant and I couldn’t be happier. Lighting is a bit bad in the after pic, but it’s completely changed my life. Got it done in Fort Lauderdale for $1 a graft, they were amazing, follow up constantly and offered me a free PRP session too if I booked that month.

My crown area has filled in immensely too. Glad I didn’t go all the way to Turkey to get it done.

4500 grafts enough?

I was quoted 4500 grafts by Dr. L @ absolute hair clinic. Is that gonna give me good results?

I’m 44. On minoxidil. Quit finasteride 3 years ago cause of side effects.

9 Months Update | 4,200 Grafts | Hair Center of Turkey

Hey everyone! I wanted to share my 9-month hair transplant journey and current results.

I had 4,200 grafts at Hair Center of Turkey, and overall, I’m really happy with the process. I’ve been through the same journey, so I know the feeling checking the mirror every day, waiting for growth, and wondering if everything is going as it should.

What made the journey easier for me was the support I received throughout the process. My doctor, the medical team, translators, and consultants were always there for me. Whenever I had a question or concern, I could message them and always got a response. That really gave me peace of mind.

I’m now at month 9, and I wanted to share my progress. 👇

If you’re considering a transplant or you’re already going through it, feel free to ask me anything. I’m happy to share the products I used, my aftercare routine, and my personal experience.

I know how many questions you have at the beginning, because I had them too. If my experience can help someone, I’ll be happy. ❤️

Need opinion about hair transplant.

I’m 34 years old. Over the years since I was idk like 16 I have had my hair exactly like this. It’s never changed. Problem is my hair went from when I was 10 years old a full set even in the crown area to what you see now and that’s all I did. Thinking about getting 3500 grafts done since that’s what they said I needed. My issue is does it last forever? How long does it last?

Why isn’t Long Hair FUE more mainstream? (Besides the cost). Genuinely curious about the downsides.

So I’ve been deep-diving into FUE and keep seeing clinics pushing the "unshaven" or "long hair" technique as this magic bullet—walk in, get a transplant, walk out with your locks intact and no one knows. On paper, it sounds like a no-brainer for anyone with social anxiety or a corporate job.

But here’s what I don’t get: if cost wasn’t an issue, why aren’t more top-tier surgeons recommending this? There has to be a clinical catch beyond just the price tag. I asked a few reps and got vague answers, so I dug into the actual surgical literature and spoke to a couple of techs. Here is the real reason the industry hasn't fully shifted, and the true pros/cons.

---

The #1 Reason (It’s NOT money): Graft Transection & Survival

When you shave the donor area, the surgeon sees the exact angle, direction, and curvature of each follicle as it exits the scalp. With long hair, the weight of the hair pulls the follicle slightly sideways, changing its trajectory.

To extract safely, the punch needs to be perfectly parallel to the hair shaft. In long hair, the shaft bends, making it incredibly hard to gauge the true angle of the bulb below the skin. The result? Even experienced surgeons see a 10–15% higher transection rate (chopped follicles) with long hair compared to shaved. That means you’re killing 1 in 10 grafts just to avoid a buzz cut. Most elite surgeons won't risk your limited donor supply for that.

---

The Real Pros (Why some still do it):

· Zero "Ugly Duckling" Phase: You don't have to wear a hat for 4 months. The existing long hair covers the recipient redness immediately.
· Return-to-Work Speed: If you're a CEO or in client-facing sales, you can be back in meetings on Day 2 without anyone noticing the micro-scabs.
· Psychological Comfort: For some, losing their remaining hair via a shave is more traumatic than the balding itself. This avoids that shock.

---

The Brutal Cons (The "Other" Reasons):

  1. Post-Op Care is a Nightmare
With a shaved head, you can gently pat the recipient area with saline and see exactly where the scabs are. With long hair, the crusts get tangled into the native hair. You can't wash vigorously, so the scabs cake up and stay longer, which actually suffocates the new grafts and can lead to folliculitis (infected/inflamed follicles).

  2. The "Graft Placement" Illusion
In a shaved recipient, the doctor can see the natural micro-patterning of your native hair to perfectly angle the new ones. With long hair covering the field, they are placing grafts blindly between existing strands.

· Result: Higher risk of "cobblestoning" (bumpy skin) or grafts placed at the wrong angle. If the angle is off by 10 degrees, it won't matter when short, but when that hair grows to 3 inches, it'll stick straight out like a wire brush.

  1. Shock Loss is WORSE (not better)
People think long hair protects you. Nope. The trauma of extraction and insertion often triggers "telogen effluvium" (shock loss) in the native long hairs. When those 4-inch hairs fall out at week 3, it looks devastating—like you lost way more than you gained. With a shaved head, shock loss is just stubble falling out, and new growth catches up uniformly, so you don't notice the shed as a "massive bald patch."

  2. It Takes Twice as Long
The techs have to constantly part the hair, hold it back with clips, and meticulously separate strands just to see the skin. This increases the time the grafts are out of the body (ischemia time), which reduces their overall viability. Longer surgery = more swelling and more trauma to the scalp.

---

The Elephant in the Room: Who offers it?

Notice that the famous, top-1% surgeons (Konior, Shapiro, Feriduni, etc.) rarely push unshaven FUE as their standard. They offer it, but warn heavily against it.

Conversely, the budget clinics in Turkey and cheaper US chains heavily market long hair FUE. Why? Because it’s a marketing gimmick to get the insecure patient in the door. They don't care if the survival rate drops to 85% instead of 95%—they just want your booking.

TL;DR: The industry hasn't shifted because graft survival > vanity. Unless you literally cannot shave your head for a wedding or work, the shaved method gives the surgeon better visibility, better angle placement, easier aftercare, and 10-15% more guaranteed growth. Saving money is just the cherry on top—the real cost of long hair FUE is paid in lost follicles.

Would I do it? Only if I had a ridiculously thick donor area and a surgeon who showed me 100+ cases of their long-hair work with high-res follow-ups. Otherwise, buzz it off and wear a hat for 4 months. Your future density will thank you.

PSA for anyone flying home post-transplant: DO NOT skip the wheelchair/special assistance.

I just finished my FUE transplant, and I highly, highly recommend you pre-book airport wheelchair or special assistance for your return flight. I ignored this advice, and I deeply regret it.

I found myself having to literally sprint from one end of a terminal to the other for 25 minutes to make my connecting gate. If you've just had 3,500 grafts extracted, you know that keeping your blood pressure low and your heart rate down is absolutely critical for the first few days. My head genuinely felt like it was going to explode from the stress and physical exertion.

If you book the special assistance, you breeze right through VIP lanes and security without having to rush.

Also, a reality check: Turkey is sweltering hot right now, and some of the air-conditioning in the airport is not adequate for the heat. On top of that, you will occasionally run into staff who are completely overwhelmed and not very helpful. Don't leave your health up to chance—call ahead and arrange the assistance.

Trust me, saving 20 minutes is not worth the risk of increasing your intracranial pressure and potentially damaging your fresh grafts or donor area. Protect your new hair and book the help. Safe travels, everyone!

Currently 3.5 months post OP -> will it become thicker?

Hey guys!

Here are some photos of my hairtransplant, its growing in quite nicely.

Since my natural hair is super thick, the transplanted area still looks thin and out of place.

Will it still improve a lot these coming months?

Trapianto - risultato dopo 8 mesi - Dr Canberk Turan - MedBlue, Istanbul - 8 Months Results

I was skeptical for many months, but the result doesn't seem bad to me.

Clinica MedBlue

Ho 34 anni.

Operato l’11 dicembre 2025.

Unità follicolari: 4300.

Tecnica: FUE.

Attualmente assumo Finasteride (da 5 anni) e Minoxidil.

Dutasteride isn't working for me. Can I combine it with finasteride?

I've been using dutasteride for a few years now, and I even had a small hair transplant at my temples. But the hair loss continues. First it was at my temples, and now it seems to be happening all over my head. I also take 5mg of oral minoxidil and currently have mesotherapy with dutasteride and vitamins once or twice a month. I want to try adding finasteride since I've seen some successful cases. I've never had any side effects.

9 months post hair transplant - 3,000 grafts. How does it look?

Hey guys,

Just hit the 9 - month mark after my transplant (about 3,000 grafts) and thought I’d share where I’m at.

Overall I’m pretty happy with how it’s coming in so far, but I’m still hoping the density fills in a bit more over the next few months. From what I’ve read, results can keep improving up to 12 months (sometimes even longer).

What do you think of the progress at 9 months? Does the density look about right for this stage, or is there still a decent amount of improvement left?

Would love some honest opinions.

Hair transplant after 13 days

Hii, this is my 2nd hair transplant after 1 year to enhance the density of my temple area. I’m attaching the picture after day 13. Please tell me, if it’s good or it could’ve been better.

The second picture is from my first hair transplant after 12 days.

Is it risky for me to get a HT?

24 years old, family history of balding/thinning, don’t smoke or drink, can’t tolerate Finasteride despite oral/topical, 1mg daily, 0.5mg MWF, 0.25mg daily, even 0.0025% dissolved into liquid minoxidil (mental side effects of anhedonia, anxiety, etc)

I have like 5 month supply of topical minoxidil, and a
Dr Pen micro needling pen. I’m aware that it’s risky to get a HT with those variables taking place
(24, family history of balding, can’t tolerate Finasteride)

If it’s relevant, I can grow a very big beard easily, so that could be an option for donor area extraction.

Willing to do 1-3 transplants if needed total.

6 Month update (HLC Ankara, 3153 grafts)

Just hit the 6 month mark post-op (procedure date: February 13th). I’m 36 years old and have been on fin and min for over 13 years. This is how it looks straight out of the shower with zero product.

Really happy with how the new hairline is shaping up. Definitely a noticeable improvement vs 5 months. Just waiting for the density to start. I've noticed that the right side seems to have grown in a bit more than the left, but hopefully will all catch up in the next 6 months. How's it looking?

Dutasteride and minoxidil don’t work

I've been taking dutasteride and minoxidil for a few years now, and my hair is still falling out. A year ago, I had a hair transplant at my temples, but now I'm noticing hair loss all over my head again. I'm taking 0.5 mg of dutasteride and 5 mg of minoxidil. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there any way to fix it?

9 month. Worried about results. Have I had a failed transplant?

Thoughts on this HT? Honestly I feel worried. Almost nothing in the crown. They did like 400 grafts there, and also worried about the front. Looks pluggy and spacey. Clinic in Sweden around 3000$
