If Deliveroo Is So Terrible, Why Do Riders Keep Choosing to Log In?

If Deliveroo Is So Terrible, Why Do Riders Keep Choosing to Log In?

Every time Deliveroo advertises work, the same critics appear claiming that riders are paid less than minimum wage, forced to work long hours, and exploited because they are vulnerable.

But if the platform is genuinely so awful, why do thousands of people continue choosing to sign up, log in, and accept orders?

Deliveroo is flexible work. Riders can decide when to work, whether to accept orders, and whether the opportunity fits around their existing job, studies, or personal commitments. It is not being presented as a traditional salaried job with guaranteed hours; it is self-employed delivery work, and that model naturally comes with different responsibilities and risks.

That does not mean every rider has a perfect experience, or that concerns about earnings should be ignored. But describing every independent worker as “exploited” simply because they choose flexible work is patronising. Adults are capable of deciding whether the pay, hours, costs, and freedom make sense for them.

If people believe the rates are unacceptable, they are free to reject orders—or choose another job. What is the point of attacking Deliveroo every time it hires when the very flexibility people criticise is exactly why many riders use it?

Are we really profiting off of unemployed people

I’m a network engineer who just lost my job due to contract negotiations. They decided to hire off shore people(Indians) to do our job for pennies on the dollar. It is what it is. Don’t give your life to a corporation etc etc. Anyways, I decided to go to the job boards and check for work. I hit LinkedIn, monster, indeed, etc etc. We know the usuals to try and get another gig(if you got leads drop them for me please). Anyways I just so happened to see a Sequoia-Connect. They had a couple of NetEng/CloudEng job postings that seemed enticing. Why are they trying to make you PAY for the ability to have them help you gain employment?! Like WTF?! They are trying to make you pay $230-$990 dollars?! The job market is already fucked and now I have to PAY you to help me get employment?! And you’re probably going to still take a piece of my check after the fact?! I would Neeeeveeeer…but, has anyone used this?! Does this work?!

Indeed is full of fake jobs and I’m done pretending this is normal

I’m beyond pissed off with Indeed now.

Half the jobs on there feel fake, half feel dead, and the rest get reposted over and over like some cheap scam to keep desperate people clicking. You spend time applying properly, tailoring your CV, writing a decent cover letter, and then get absolutely nothing. No reply. No update. No rejection. Just silence like the vacancy never existed in the first place.

And the worst part is the competition is completely cooked. You’re not just competing with people in the UK anymore, you’re competing with everyone and their dog spamming the same role from every country on earth. So even when a job is real, the pool is bloated, the response rate is dead, and the whole thing feels rigged from the start.

That’s what really boils my blood. Not just that the jobs are fake — it’s that they waste your time while pretending to offer opportunity. It’s disrespectful. It’s lazy. It’s dishonest. And the platforms just let it happen because they care more about traffic than whether anyone actually gets hired.

Indeed has turned into a landfill of ghost jobs, recycled adverts, and fake urgency.

Apply once.

Get ghosted.

See the same job back up next week.

Repeat until you want to throw your phone at the wall.

This job market is an absolute joke.

Indeed/Linkedin is garbage for jobs.. so I'm trying Reddit out

There's something seriously wrong with job boards as of recently so I'm venturing out in new ways, please delete if this isn't allowed on your channel** The uptick in fake candidates is wild and disturbing and it's hard for the real people to be seen.

Hospitals have so many openings for physicians, RN's, Imaging (cardiac/echo/xray/MRI all of them), pharmacies at hospitals in the US.

If you're applying and not getting an interview, that's why.

There's roles for New Grads with sign ons too.

I've been a redditor & lurker for 7 years, happy to finally contribute lol

THE UK JOB MARKET IS COLLAPSING — AND THE GOVERNMENT IS PRETENDING EVERYTHING IS FINE

The figures are bad. The reality behind them is worse.

UK companies cut 13,000 jobs in June — then cut another 13,000 in July.

That isn’t “a few businesses restructuring”. It means 26,000 pay packets disappeared while politicians continued pointing at economic growth.

Vacancies have fallen to around 707,000. Youth unemployment has hit 16.1%. Nearly 1 million people aged 16–24 are now neither working nor studying.

Young people are being told to get experience while entry-level jobs vanish. Graduates are leaving university and entering a labour market where suitable jobs have fallen by 33%.

At the same time, employers are being squeezed by:

\- Higher employer National Insurance

\- A higher minimum wage

\- Rising energy and operating costs

\- Borrowing costs near 5.45%

So businesses are doing what businesses do: freezing recruitment, leaving vacancies empty and refusing to replace workers who leave.

The result is a silent jobs massacre:

Fewer interviews.

Fewer first chances.

More people stuck on benefits.

More graduates moving back home.

Less tax revenue.

More government borrowing.

Higher interest costs.

The UK can keep claiming GDP is growing.

But if the number of people earning, spending and building careers is shrinking, this isn’t prosperity.

It’s economic decline being hidden behind a single headline number.

I wouldn't mind being suspended from Indeed and Glassdoor if they would stop spamming my inbox with jobs I can no longer apply for.

Can someone tell me this is scam or not?

They contacted me through Indeed and I was suspicious. Because they invite me to quick video interview in monday in august 18th. But august 18th should be tuesday. So I try to google it and found that Medinova Group Co was in the health care sector. Not whatever is written in the job description....

JOB SCAM: Avalex Waste Management

If you apply for this job on indeed, please know that it is fake. My father in law was almost scammed out of $5k by this fake job. Me and my in laws knew it was a scam but there was zero information on it when we looked it up. Just one sketchy website in Dutch. there was no information on whether it was a scam or if it was legit. They sent a $5k check, which my father in law deposited. Thank god he didn’t spend the money because he went to his bank and they confirmed this was a scam. Putting this out there so if there’s any other victims out there looking for a new job, this is not it!

For details on the job they wanted to hire him for: data entry remote job for $29 an hour. They stated that they were opening up an office in Florida Lakeside, but they are stationed in the Netherlands. They said that they were a waste management company.
They sent him $5000 in order to buy equipment for this so-called “job” and then send the remaining to their vendor.

Please be aware!!

seems like fraud company- Beaware of this in uk- Regenthire

I wanted to share this with the Reddit community because your previous posts/comments helped me realise that I may have been targeted by a recruitment scam. Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences — it potentially saved me from losing a significant amount of money.

I applied for a Senior Accountant position advertised by Regent Hiring, with a salary of £55,000–£65,000.

Job advert:
Regent Hiring – Senior Accountant job advert

Senior accountant

I completed a pre-screening interview and subsequently received an email from someone calling himself James Kingston, Careers Advisor.

The email told me that I had performed exceptionally well and was one of their strongest candidates. It then said the only area requiring attention was my lack of regulatory certifications.

They recommended two specific courses:

  • ICAM – CIFA
  • Accounting Principles & Compliance in Practice (APCP)

They then instructed me to enrol on one of the courses, update my CV to show the qualification as "in progress", and send them the updated CV together with my enrolment letter.

The email stated that they would submit these documents to their senior, who would then submit my CV to the hiring manager after verification.

The email I received was from:

James Kingston
Careers Advisor
Email: james@regenthire.co.uk
Regent Hiring: regenthiring.com
Telephone: 020 3310 6273 / 020 3310 6298

At first, this seemed completely legitimate because the recruitment process and communication appeared professional.

However, I started researching the company and the course provider and found multiple Reddit users describing very similar experiences involving Regent Hire and candidates being directed towards paid courses.

That's when I became extremely concerned.

What made me suspicious

The job itself is for a Senior Accountant, with responsibilities such as:

  • Management accounts
  • Statutory accounts
  • Month-end/year-end
  • VAT
  • Budgeting and forecasting
  • Financial reporting
  • Audit support

Yet a paid AML/regulatory certification was presented as the missing requirement preventing my CV from being submitted to the hiring manager.

I am an experienced accounting professional, so this raised questions for me.

Thank you Reddit ❤️

I want to specifically thank the people who posted about their experiences before me.

Those posts made me stop and investigate before proceeding further.

I found other candidates describing similar situations, including people who said they had actually paid for courses after being told they were needed for the recruitment process.

I'm now keeping all emails, job adverts, messages and other evidence and will be reporting my experience to the appropriate authorities.

I'm posting this mainly as a warning to other jobseekers.

If you've had a similar experience with Regent Hiring / Regent Hire, or were directed to Accredited Finance Courses, please share your experience below. It would be useful to establish how many people have encountered the same process.

Please don't send money to anyone connected with a job application without independently verifying the employer, recruiter and requirement first.
