Hi everyone, I just wanted to give a final update from my previous posts here and here.
Firstly, thank you so much to everyone who commented, messaged me, shared my story, donated so generously to my GFM or offered support and advice over the last few weeks. I honestly did not expect the response my posts received, and I’m incredibly grateful.
After a very stressful few months, I'm so delighted and grateful, and relieved to say that I was thankfully able to secure additional funding which means my outstanding university fees have now been paid and I will be able to graduate and begin work as an Intern doctor this summer. This would not have been possible without the extremely generous donations I received on my fundraiser, and without some extra help from some very selfless people who went above and beyond to help me.
This is actually the first year of medical school that I was able to access my exam results on time. Every previous year, my results had been withheld while I desperately tried to clear outstanding balances before deadlines. I don’t think people realise how stressful and isolating that cycle can become, and how relieved I feel to finally be out of that cycle!
I also just want to say that this experience has given me so much faith in people. I’m someone who finds it very difficult to ask for help, but the kindness shown to me by strangers over the last while has honestly been overwhelming. There are some extremely good people out there, and I hope to be able to pay forward this kindness when my situation allows it.
I’m really happy with my exam results and I’m looking forward to graduating and starting intern year, I’ll be finding out my job next week!
Thank you all again for the support, kindness and encouragement. I will never forget this.
I’m a qualified doctor, practiced for a few years then moved away from it into something non medical. I’m interested in doing training in Botox and linking with a salon in my area to administer on a part time basis. I know I need to be on the IMC register and have my own insurance. Is there anything else I need to be aware of? Anyone else done something similar? I have completed intern year. I have not completed a scheme nor am I currently on a scheme.

Hi everyone, I’m a medical student who’s very interested in cardiothoracic surgery, and I’d really like to get involved in research in that field.
I’m not entirely sure where to start, so I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to find research opportunities - e.g should I try cold emailing consultants or SpRs?
Any advice on how to get started, who to contact, what types of projects are realistic for a med student to contribute to, and how best to make myself useful would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
I have to laugh or I'll cry
I am not clear whether it is 10 or 12 working days.. is it maximum 10 working days because they have to take the two days for the bank holidays?
Thanks
I hope everyone is doing well, im currently at the end of my third year of med school (non eu but i am an irish citizen) going into clinicals and i wanna work in ireland after grad. Seeing all these posts about a lack of jobs is concerning and so im looking for advice as to what i can do during my remaining years of med school to get the best shot at landing a job in ireland
much appreciated
Honest opinions on them, people who worked with them and how does it work in practice that they are supposed to be getting supervised directly by the consultant ? Surely that takes away from nchd training time?
Hello
Im planning to set for December MRCP Ireland Part 1
is it better to do passmedicine or Onexamination
also what is a recommended solid plan?
Anyone receive a placement yet? I assumed mid May we would get news but nothing as of yet from my side. Tier 2 applicant here feeling anxious 😬
Had a seemingly good interview for a surgical sho position in Dublin. Anyone know around how long it takes them to get back?
Should I give up if they don't send anything back after 2 weeks?
My spouse and I are both doctors and have two children who are going to be 1 and 5 years old when we will need full time childcare. The local creche does afterschool collections but doesn’t mind babies. The next nearest creche who minds babies would make for a difficult commute to and from work. But even if we managed it, the waitlist is nearly 2 years long. My scheme wont wait that long.
Asking around a few of our colleagues have had luck with au pairs and mindme, but I personally have trust issues stemming from childhood accidents I’ve seen at work which many might relate to in this sub. I have also learned a lot about how many au pairs are (perhaps unknowingly) in illegal arrangements in Ireland vs other EU countries, especially around minimum pay. Ireland classes au pairs as domestic workers with all the same rights as a nanny, and once you pay them properly a career nanny isn’t that much more expensive in the end.
Our standards are basic I think - don’t text and drive, cut grapes etc into quarters and supervise meals, know CPR/first aid, know how to swim, be a nice person who actually likes children most of the time. We wouldn’t expect a nanny to also be a housekeeper and primary school teacher (some of the ads on nanny agency websites are in fact this demanding).
It’s difficult to find someone who you know will be a good fit, but I met a few in my daughter’s creche. Just wondering if anyone here hired a live out nanny, perhaps from a local creche or an agency, and how it worked out. We are considering offering a salary match with proper payslips (PRSI etc) to a room leader. They’d never be asked to work holidays or weekends either.
Hi, dual-citizen of Ireland and the US here. My entire adult life I have wanted to move back to the EU, but I'm hesitant to completely jump ship especially because I've spent so much time specifically laser focused on US medical school requirements. Also, from what I understand my MCAT isn't transferrable to an Irish medical school because it's too old.
I was wondering what it would be like if I decided to get my medical degree here in the US, and then later move back to Ireland. I would imagine I have to go through the entire equivalent of residency, what exactly is that process like? How long is it? How likely is it for a nonresident citizen to get into one of these positions? Is the pay just as shoddy as it is here in the states?
Another important thing, does the USMLE (US medical licensing exams) have any value in Ireland?
Should a Pakistani doctor after doing their training (HJ) consider Ireland as a good place to find a job? Is it a NO NO or is still an option available?
Anyone have a realistic idea of salaried GP earning potential. Looking at 8 sessions per week.
Genuinely have no idea what to do. In a niche specialty, so even if there were gen med/surgical jobs going, I've been out of clinical long enough to not be able to compete for these jobs. Irish grad, went to the UK for a year after internship (only way to get experience in my specialty), and have been home for the past two years. My wife (also a doctor) is struggling to find a standalone too. Have applied to everything. I know no one has a solution, just needing to vent.
Hello I am a fifth year medical student in Poland (English programme 6 years)
I was hoping someone could please give me advice on this issue
I am hoping to apply for intern year as part of the 2027 intake however my college has told us Irish students that they will not be able to provide us with our official centile rankings in time to meet the HSE requirements, this is extremely disheartening as all other polish universities have made requirements to accommodate Irish students however my college has stated we are too small a cohort for them to make such an allowance, however they have stated they can provide us with preliminary centiles in view of providing official ones as soon as every student both polish and english programme have had the opportuiny to resit any exams if necessary
I was wondering if any person knew if the IMC or whatever body that governs the intern year would accept preliminary rankings as long as we provided our diploma stating all exams had been passed in time
I would really appreciate any assistance in this matter
Thank you in advance
Hi everyone. I recently applied for a Surgical SHO position and received an email saying I was in the final shortlist, but I had to reply by 6pm that same day confirming I still wanted to be interviewed. It was basically a ~2 hour window from when the email was sent. Seeing as I was busy at the time and didn’t have access to my phone I was unable to reply in the timeframe requested. I have emailed explaining this and still await a response. Is a short timeframe like this normal to accept for interview? Seems bizarre to me.
