In your opinion: why do you think Renfairs are acceptable, whilst LARPing is stigmatised?

It seems odd that whenever I talk to people, they’re excited by the idea of going to a ren fair or me playing dnd, but as soon as I mention larping, they seem to become really dismissive and judgemental about it. The only difference I see is the involvement and fighting, essentially you’re behaving like one of the paid actors at a ren fair, but those actors are not stigmatised. Is it because you’re acting for free? I really don’t understand why it’s any more “uncool” than playing dnd, doing improv or going to a ren fair (those things are all very cool to me though haha).

Would you unironically pay for a 1800s "Screen-Free" Sailing Voyage?

Hello everybody! Just to clarify for sub rules: I am an independent experience designer pitching a concept I want to personally create, not a student or company doing a formal survey or academic research. I simply want to hear community input.

Imagine booking a 4-day long-weekend voyage on a real historic tall ship/schooner (like on Lake Superior or the coast).

The catch?

  1. Digital Quarantine: Your smartphones are locked in a wooden chest at the dock for 4 days.

  2. Immersive Atmosphere: The crew consists of historical reenactors who keep the 1800s atmosphere, leading sea shanty circles at night and telling maritime lore.

  3. A Gamified Badge System: You get a leather logbook and earn real brass medals/stamps for completing tasks, like learning to tie 5 historic knots, standing the 2 AM lookout watch with a brass spyglass, or navigating using a sextant.

You can opt-out and just relax on deck if you're an introvert, but the activities are there to make you feel like part of an adventure.

If this existed for around the price of a boutique weekend retreat, would you unironically consider going, or would it be too niche?

Anyone know rawblade ?

Hello!

I just found my dream (for the next larp at least).

https://www.rawblade.com/gb/search?controller=search&s=Oria

A brand name Rawblade. From Spain apparently. Everything look great and legit but after 9 years of larp, I found myself suspicious of this very big looking brand I never heard about before.

Does anyone know it ? Already buy from it ? Is it as good as it looks?

Thanks in advance!

Hynafol Curiosity

Hey y’all, my friends and I are thinking of planning a trip to hynafol grand gathering in the future. Currently I am the only single one(25M) in the group so everyone else plans to share a tent with their SO. To immerse myself a little bit more i was hoping to find some folks to camp out with at the event but am nervous to share a sleeping area with strangers lol. This would be my first experience at an event like this and I guess am just looking for some insight of what it’s like? Do folks mainly prefer private tents at this event? Does anyone have any fun/funny experiences in a shared environment they are willing to share? Was it a cool experience? What is the shower situation like at the event? I guess i’m kinda just looking to ease my anxiety over the concept lol. Thanks for any insight on personal experiences you can give!!

I ordered my boyfriend a LARP sword for our anniversary, and I’m terrified it’ll be useless

Which, it’s fine if it’s a decour piece. Truth be told we live in a rural area and there’s not really a community for this anywhere close, so he doesn’t get to use the weapons he does have often. But I custom made a sword on a website that I’m praying is legit, but I’m reaaaally worried now that 1) I fucked it up somehow, and 2) it won’t come in time. And I don’t think I can refund it since it was a custom order. I’m hoping it’ll at the very least be a nice piece for him to display, but I want opinions on if this looks/sounds… right? I really don’t know much about LARPing stuff, so my limited knowledge was based off of google searching and things I’ve picked up in the time I’ve known him, like the length of the blade and style I based off of what he seems to prefer when he does get a chance to go out. Anyways, someone please tell me if this thing will actually be a decent sword or not 🫠

How to paint foam shield?

I want to add some details to the Epic Armoury Krom shield, preferably with some type of paint. How would I go about doing so? The shield is foam, which is very appealing to me from a safety standpoint. Plus, it would look badass with my armor. My only issue is that it's somewhat bland and I'd like to add a bit of flair.

Where am I likely to hear live music that sounds like the Witcher soundtrack ?

Sorry for the weird question but I've always loved the Witcher's soundtrack (I listen to Markets of Novigrad while shopping to LARP drip) along with the band that inspired them, Percival and I wanted to know which LARP's am I mostly likely to hear live music that sounds similar to that.

I just want to RP a off duty soldier sitting by a campfire or in a tavern and chill while listening to Witcher like music.

Thanks everyone.

My Studio Style LARP Shoots

Heyo yall!

Back again to share some private studio style shoots I did at last years Faeble LARP!

I love offering such a service cause it allows folks to get portrait style, high quality shots of their characters that they worked so hard for!

I use a full 3 point light set up on black backdrop to ensure folks really pop, all in a small single tent footprint!

Really proud to say all these shots were taken, edited, and delivered immediately at the end of the shoot!

LARP groups with a focus on both pvp and cosplay

Hey eveyone, Im looking into getting into LARP and wanted to see if there's any groups that have a focus on the cosplay and does PvP.

I like the idea of Amtgard, but when I look up videos of them doing their battles I notice they're usually just wearing normal clothes and not really cosplaying, or a lot of people wear tank tops/sleeveless shirts. I get it, it gets hot when fighting, but it kinda just takes me out of the roleplay; just a personal preference is all.

Anyone know of any groups that might fulfill both wants? I live in the South East of the United States.

What makes fantasy/medieval boots worth buying for you?

I’m working on handmade medieval-inspired leather boots, and one thing I keep thinking about is comfort.

A lot of costume boots look good in photos, but after a few hours at a Ren Faire, LARP event, or festival, comfort becomes everything.

So I’m trying to improve these with better leather, stronger construction, and possibly rubber soles for more grip and durability.

For people who wear boots at events: what matters most to you?

Comfort for walking all day, historical style, custom sizing, leather quality, rubber soles, or the overall fantasy look?

I’d love honest feedback before I make the next batch.

Should I mention LARP in job interviews?

A surprising amount of interviewers like to ask what I do for fun. So far, I've never mentioned larp in an interview (or I call it "camping" if I do) since it didn't feel worth the potential stigma or the time it takes to explain. However, now I have an interview coming up that includes dinner with some of the team, so I'm going to have a very long time just for casual conversation and to talk about my personal life. I wonder if larp could be a unique talking point that might make me seem more interesting or more social, but I also worry that it could easily do the exact opposite due to the stigma.

What are y'all's attitudes or insights towards mentioning LARP in work environments like this? Is it worth the risk?

Extra context:

I live in the USA and I'm applying to engineering jobs that care a whole lot about taking initiative and being good at communication and working with others. I believe that larp has been a very good exercise in my confidence, collaboration, and generally being more pro-social and putting myself out there, but idk if I can convince others to see it that way. If the topic comes up, I could explain how I went to my first ever larp event alone even though I was kinda terrified and way out of my comfort zone. I think my ability to take that initiative and be bold despite my nerves is a pretty good quality that an employer could appreciate. Plus, I also wonder if talking about larp could be that extra little something that makes me stand out and seem just a bit more interesting or passionate. I have a handful of other hobbies that I can talk about too, but this one is definitely the most unique and most involved.

However, larp still comes with all of the negative stereotypes, and even if they don't know what larp is, they could still be put off just by the general strangeness of how it sounds on the surface. In particular, I would hate for the cliche stereotype of larpers being weirdo recluses who live in fantasy land to be associated with me. I know I don't come off anywhere near that bad, but I *am* a fairly timid person who also gets quite nervous in interviews. I really don't want that stereotype to exacerbate my natural awkwardness. That's probably the biggest concern I have about mentioning larp, so I don't know if the potential small benefits are worth that risk.

Drachenfest!

Currently in the Week of Joy after my 4th Drachenfest. This one meant a lot to me particularly because I created the biggest prop I've ever brought to a LARP (the Fae Wylds mushroom garden). I have been engaging in experimental alchemy the past couple years regarding fae mushrooms, and went all out with props this year (even creating a book of information).

I have aphantasia, meaning I can't picture things in my head, so for this to come out just as I planned and "envisioned" makes me so happy and proud!

Bonus photos of my PC, Silas Hawthorne of the Alchemy Guild.

Handcrafting A Custom Medieval Fantasy Shirt From Scratch

I’ve always loved medieval and fantasy-themed live-action role-playing (LARP) costumes, so I spent several days crafting this Renaissance-style shirt entirely by hand from scratch and documented every step of the process to share it with you all here.
