Lice season is ramping up again — a few free tips from a local lice-removal business

Hi r/BellevueWA — full disclosure up front, we run a lice treatment business (Lice Charmers), so take this as coming from someone with a commercial interest. Mods, if this isn't allowed, no worries — please remove.

Posting because we're heading into the part of the year when calls pick up (summer camps, then back-to-school in the fall), and every year we talk to parents who spent weeks and a lot of money on stuff that didn't work. So, some genuinely free advice, no strings:

  • Nits ≠ active lice. Finding eggs (nits) alone doesn't always mean an active infestation. Live, moving lice are the sign to treat. A lot of panic (and unnecessary re-treatment) comes from misreading old nits.
  • Most drugstore products don't kill eggs. They target live lice, not all nits — which is why timing and thorough combing matter, and why people often think a treatment "failed" when they just missed the egg stage. If you use one, plan a second pass around day 9–10.
  • Combing with oil is the unglamorous part that actually works. A good metal nit comb on wet, conditioned hair, small sections, every few days for a couple weeks. Tedious but effective.
  • Check the whole household the same day. It spreads fast; treating one kid while missing a sibling restarts the cycle.
  • You usually don't need to fumigate your house. Lice die within a day or two off a human head. Wash recently-used bedding/hats in hot water; skip the chemical bombing of every soft surface.

Happy to answer general lice questions in the comments for free — no pitch. If anyone wants professional help there are several options in the area including us, but honestly a patient parent with a good comb can often handle a mild case at home.

Hope this saves someone a stressful week.

Is it okay to use anti-lice shampoo every Friday as a preventive measure?

My kid had lice a year ago, but now everything's been okay. I keep a stock of lice shampoo, just in case!

Then he started kindergarten this month. Later on, the teacher notified us that some preschoolers have lice. We were encouraged to check our kids and use lice shampoo, if there's any.

UGHHH are these lice 😭😭😭

I have an itchy scalp and dandruff in general although I use a shampoo that helps with that but I really didn’t think much of it when my scalp was beginning to get increasingly itchy which was at least 1-2 weeks ago. I saw a couple of these guys on my blanket and then on my coloring book while I was working on it?? just so weird that I didn’t notice them in my hair first especially with how itchy my scalp has been (particularly the top/front and underneath/at the bottom near my neck). I honestly probably didn’t check my scalp thoroughly enough the first time because I just assumed it was dandruff but after seeing these bugs and doing a second check of my scalp, i’ve noticed the white things in my hair are really sticking to my hair which i read is common with lice eggs. i have long thick hair and this feels like a literal nightmare and im so worried that i may have given lice to the people in my household or at work. ALSO does itching your scalp make it worse? because as hard as i try i just cannot stop myself and am having trouble sleeping because of how extreme the itching has been 😩 ive ordered lice treatment already bc im paranoid and 90% sure this is in fact lice. is there anything i can do in the meantime/during the process of getting rid of these lice to help with this unbearable itching? i love my hair so so much and have finally reached a length i really love after letting it grow out but I am ready to say fuck it all and shave my head bald because of the itchiness 😔

Question] Is permethrin cream effective for removing nits from hair?

Hi everyone,
I have a question about permethrin cream. I know it’s commonly used to treat head lice, but I’m wondering if it is actually effective at removing nits (lice eggs) that are firmly attached to the hair.
Most of the live lice seem to be gone, but the nits are still there, and it’s becoming really embarrassing because people keep noticing them and asking about them.
Has anyone here used permethrin cream and had success getting rid of the nits, or does it only kill the live lice? If it doesn’t work well for nits, what actually helped you remove them completely?

My nightmarish experience with pubic lice – I don’t know what else to do.

Hi everyone.

About two weeks ago, I went to the beach with some friends. We were there all day and got back late at night. I took a shower and went to bed, but I woke up in the middle of the night with intense itching on my lower abdomen and genital area.

After scratching for a while, I absentmindedly looked at my fingers and saw
this(https://vimeo.com/1204925311?share=copy&fl=sv&fe=ci) .I completely freaked out. I ran to the bathroom with my phone flashlight and found another one(https://vimeo.com/1204928865?share=copy&fl=sv&fe=ci) , then another(https://vimeo.com/1204930333?share=copy&fl=cl&fe=ci) , and another(https://vimeo.com/1204931283?share=copy&fl=cl&fe=ci) ...You get the idea.

I had to be at work a few hours later, so I didn’t have much time to think about it. I spent the whole morning stressed out, wondering what these bugs were. At that point, I honestly thought they were mites or something similar. Pubic lice never even crossed my mind.

The itching continued at work, so I called a retired dermatologist who knows my boss. Unfortunately, she’s around 80 years old and doesn’t even have a smartphone, so I couldn’t send her any pictures. She threw out several possibilities, which only made me even more anxious.

Eventually, I made an emergency appointment with a dermatologist near my workplace and practically ran there. After less than a minute of examining me, she said they were body lice, which I had “probably caught through sex.”

The problem is… I haven’t had sex since 2024.

I explained that to her, but she didn’t seem very interested. She prescribed Frezyderm Lice Free and told me that if I followed the instructions, I’d be rid of them within a week.

I left the office even more confused than before. I live alone, I haven’t had any sexual contact in almost two years, and I couldn’t understand how I could possibly have gotten lice.

Anyway, I followed her instructions exactly. Four days of treatment, then a one-week break, then another treatment. By the fourth day, I honestly expected them to be almost gone, but they weren’t. To give you an idea, these are all the lice I removed with tweezers on the fourth day of treatment (https://vimeo.com/1204938174?share=copy&fl=cl&fe=ci) (Sorry about the music, I had it blasting because I was trying to make the whole process a little less mentally miserable.)

She told me to be patient during the one-week break, so I did. Oddly enough, by day five I actually noticed a big improvement. Instead of finding around 20 lice a day, I was only finding 2–3.

Still, they never completely disappeared.

After the break, I did four more days of treatment instead of the two she originally recommended. By the last day, I couldn’t find a single louse, and I finally thought it was over.

Everything seemed fine until today. I hadn’t found a single louse since Monday, and I was finally starting to relax. Then, about two hours ago, I removed these two lice that were literally mating on my skin(https://vimeo.com/1204945027?share=copy&fl=cl&fe=ci)

Yes… you read that right. Just when I thought this couldn’t get any more ridiculous, they were attached to each other and mating on me.

At this point, I honestly don’t know what I’m doing wrong.

I’ve washed everything at 60°C (140°F), I change my bed sheets every day, I’ve shaved all the affected areas, and yet these damn things are still showing up.

I’m begging for any advice.

Does anyone have any idea why they haven’t gone away despite all of this? Could the diagnosis have been wrong? Could the treatment have failed? Is there something I’m missing?

This whole experience has been mentally exhausting, and not knowing how I got them in the first place (or why they still haven’t gone away after everything I’ve done) is making it even worse.

If anyone has been through something similar or has any suggestions, I’d really appreciate your help.

Son's friend with chronic lice wants to come over -- what should I do?

My son has been friends with a really nice girl for several years. He's been invited to her house on at least one occasion and they've gone to each other's birthdays, etc., for years.

Over the past year or so, she seems to constantly have lice. It's so bad that other kids in my son's class have noticed it and have even said something to her. Not bullying or shaming, but apparently just asking if she's aware. When they've asked, she's just shrugged it off.

Our school has had at least two lice outbreaks this year and each time I've helped spread the word to parents. Her mom has seemed concerned both times...but the girl's lice are still there. The girl even had to go to the hospital for appendicitis a few months ago, which I figured would mean the lice would be taken care of, since hospitals should be sterile environments. But when she got back to school, the lice were still there.

I've been giving my son prevention treatment each week, and it seems to work. But lately this girl and another boy my son has been friends with for a while have been asking to come over our house. I have no problem with them -- they're good kids and I'd be happy to host them. But I don't want to get lice in my house.

We live in a small-ish apartment, so it's almost impossible to avoid having the kids on soft surfaces like our sofa or on my son's bed to sit down.

Does anyone have any advice about this situation? For instance, why might this girl still have lice? And especially, what, if anything, can I do about having her over and not leaving lice behind?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Shaving before my flight to be lice-free?

I've never had lice in my life. All of a sudden, 3 days into a temp apartment, I see them. I've been working with younger kids since March; maybe that's where I got them.

Either way, I'm at a loss of what to do. I understand there's the dimethicone + comb method, which I read on here, but I'm dreading reinfection or creating drug resistant bugs if the situation is prolonged. The temp apartment is fully furnished and there's not a lot of things I can do here deep-cleaning-wise.

If I clean-shave my head before going on my flight back home, will I completely eliminate lice?

Thanks for the advice.

My Special Needs Child Has Lice

Discovered my (7yo) child has lice . Am unsure of how long it’s been . She is nonverbal and handicap. I noticed her itching her scalp . Lice . Used Nix lice treatment and i found 5 adults while combing her hair tonight . She gets very combative with prolonged hair brushing so I had to stop combing. What are the next steps ? I plan to call pediatrician in the morning and see if he’ll prescribe anything . I want the most efficient way to rid any of us and the house of the lice .

I think my friend has lice & I'm unsure how to bring it up.

So for context, I recently got lice (maybe 1-2 weeks ago?) After meeting my friend for a little bit, I got a treatment, but I hung out with my friend two days ago and now, I have them again.

I don't know how to ask her about it, she has a younger sibling who is under the age of 12, so I think its came from them. Bringing it up feels like I'm accusing her of giving me them.

(My aunt is concerned for me because my friend wants to have a sleepover at some point)

I'm just wondering what the best course of action could be?

Head or Body Louse? Found on my hand while visiting a relative in the hospital, I am freaking out

I am hoping someone here can talk/calm me down. I have PTSD from a bedbug infestation some years ago as well as sebopsoriasis, and ever since I was a little kid my head always itches when I get nervous.

I was visiting a relative in her hospital room on Monday, so 4 days ago, when I saw this bug on my hand maybe 15 min after sitting down on the chair there. I consulted a few sources and have been told it is a louse, not sure head or body. I am very poor and live in a neighborhood of my city with many homeless encampments. Nevertheless I am hypervigilant because of my ptsd and wash my clothes every single day if I even think I came into contact with bugs. I shower daily.

My head IS itchy but it is always itchy and hard to tell if it is psychosomatic or not as I developed stress induced formication disorder following the bedbug infestation and subsequent PTSD a decade ago. A friend sent me detergent and spray that kills lice and bedbugs, and I washed every single piece of clothing I wore to the hospital first in Dawn dish soap before the detergent arrived them then the detergent, and I sprayed down my hat that I wore and my overnight bag in with the spray. Someone on another forum said this bug looked more like body lice than head lice. There are tranq users on the streets all over where I live and I rolled my overnight bag to my sister's on wheels when she was hospitalized, I tried to stay far away from any discarded clothing on the ground, too.

It is now Thursday. My sister does not itch and saw no bugs in her bed or clothes or on her person while hospitalized. My dad and a friend of hers sat in the same chair I sat in and weren't infested. There was a homeless gentleman behind me in the visiting line at the hospital entrance angling to use the restroom and he was kind of hovering or looming over me, but I read lice could not jump? I took a lyft to the hospital because it was so urgent for me to get there the day I saw the bug, so could it have crawled on me on the lyft? If it was in my hair, would it have crawled on my hand even though I didn't touch my hair at all in the hospital? Could it have been in the lyft and crawled on my bag?

Complicating matters is my living situation is very scary and chaotic bc my roommate is an alcoholic with very extreme mood swings and I am very scared of telling him I have head lice. But is it possible I do not? I only saw the one bug, haven't seen anything else, washed my hair with Olbas oil last night and took an ivermectin tablet this morning to kill anything living on me. I work 7 days a week and am under so much terrible stress I can't handle any more. Please tell me if there is any way one body louse could have randomly crawled on me and I don't have to worry about an infestation? I am on my break at work sitting in a coffee shop bathroom crying and crying in terror grief and fear. Thank you. The first image is magnified, the second is not, they are the same bug.

How can I prevent lice?

Hi all,

I have a problem. I’m going to be at my family home soon to look after my sibling, and my sibling’s dad is visiting. This man has head lice and is only starting to treat it this weekend. My sibling and I will be in the same house as him in about 5 days, which isn’t long enough for him to completely get rid of them, and I don’t know how to stop us both from getting them other than staying away from him as much as possible and washing everything. He’s hopefully only going to be there for 24 hours. I’ve discussed with my parent how uncomfortable it makes me that we’ll have someone with lice in the house and how I don’t want him there, but I’m not being listened to at all, so I’m asking for any tips or tricks that anyone here might have. Thank you all so much.

Stuffed animals after lice

I had lice about half a year ago and I bagged up some stuffed animals in a ziplock and asked my parents to put them in the wash for me at the fine since I was afraid to touch it (severe lice phobia and contamination ocd)(they forgot to) and they’ve been sitting in a ziplock since and I just put them through the wash. Are they safe and clean from all the bugs now? this is a dumb question but I just want to be a 100% safe.
