Dead fish in potomac river

We went kayaking yesterday in the Potomac river at Riley‘s lock and we must have seen at least 15 dead large fish floating in the river. Probably not safe to be fishing and eating your catch. Is this due to the sewage leak? I have not found any information on this online

Chesapeake bay gear

Thinking of getting out on the bay if I can find a reasonable priced way of doing it, and wondering what tackle folks use?

I've done a lot of catfishing got 3000 - 5000 reels for cats and surf fishing but the rods are pretty long. Then I've got some medium fast 6' rods and reels for ditch pickles (LMB).

When I boat fished as a teen it was in deeper 100-200' water for skate, conger, spurdogs and the odd shark with trolling reels like penn senator style reels with 50lb mono and heavy ass glass rods 40lb rods.

I'm going to assume that's overkill for the bay, so what do you folks use?

What I'd love to get to give you an idea of what i'd target

- Sheep

- Drum

- Cobia

- Bluecats

Best Place For Bass Fishing ?

i have been struggling so bad trying to catch some bass over the past few weeks. i live in the baltimore area and have gone to so many places so far. Centennial park, Lake elkhorn and just recently liberty reservoir also. although i only have been up to liberty once i just haven’t caught anything. using chatterbaits, swim baits, and some top water occasionally on a bait caster.

Liberty Reservoir VS Loch Raven

My Dad and I have been trying to get back into fishing as of late but haven’t had the best luck. We’ve gone both bank, and boat fishing at Loch Raven, frequently catching Panfish with the occasional small White Perch but nothing larger. We’re going to try Liberty Reservoir later this week as I’ve seen people have a lot of luck bank fishing there. My inexperience with fishing in the summer combined with the pressured waters of our reservoirs is really kicking my butt, any tips/advice?

Biggest bass caught in loch raven?

Caught this couple years ago and didn’t have a scale but I’m sure he was over 7 pounds.

Private Pond or Loch Raven?

Weighing the options of where to fish tomorrow. We canceled camping because of the heat, so my bf is taking me fishing to appease me.

Should I fish my families pond, with decent crappie and bass, or head to loch raven and rent a boat?

I’ve only fished Loch Raven once, had no luck. idk what the best lure/rig is and what y’all have caught.

Thoughts?

Savage River Success!!

My wife and I finally got around to fishing the savage river recently and had a great time! It was a lot more difficult wading than I had anticipated, though. We're looking forward to visiting the area again soon. What are some other "must visit" rivers in Western Maryland?

Video on YouTube of our adventure if interested:

Finally getting dialed with bank fishing Loch Raven the past 2 weeks.

First year consistently fishing Loch Raven from the bank. I primarily kayak fish for smallmouth. Still do, but got tired of driving to PA to fish so I started bank fishing Loch Raven around May. Finally starting to learn it a bit more.

1st is my PB for sure but didn’t have a scale. Was 18.25”. Second was 2lbs on the dot and 3rd was 2.87lbs at 17.5”.

Livestream Lecture about Blue Catfish & the Health of the Bay

🐟 PSA for anyone who cares about the Chesapeake Bay: there's a silent threat lurking below the surface.

The Blue Catfish was introduced to Virginia rivers in the 1970s as a sport fish. Nobody told it to stay put. It's now found in nearly every tidal river in Maryland, it can live 20+ years, grow to over 100 lbs, and eat basically everything in sight — blue crab, menhaden, American eel, you name it. Watermen are noticing. Scientists are alarmed. And the Bay's ecosystem is under real pressure.

On June 25 in Easton, MD, Lectures on the Shore is hosting an evening with two people who are doing something about it:

🔬 Dr. Noah Bressman — marine biologist at Salisbury University, researches invasive species in the Bay, works with MD DNR and USGS
🦞 Nick Hargrove — waterman from Tilghman Island who built a seafood processing plant specifically to catch, process, and sell blue catfish commercially. He literally got a Congressional Record Citation for it in 2024.

The idea: if you can create a market for the fish, watermen have an incentive to pull them out of the Bay. It's not a perfect solution, but it's a real one — and it's working.

Reception with speakers at 5:30 p.m. ($60) | Program 6:30–8:00 p.m. ($40) | Livestream also available if you're not local

📍 Temple B'Nai Israel, 7199 Tristan Drive, Easton, MD

Questions? Reach out to info@chesapeakeforum.org. This one's worth the drive (or the stream)!
