Asmodeus 8m pupdate

It's been about 3 months since I first posted our puppy Az, well, he's gotten much bigger! His personality shines every day haha. I love this dude so much! Mountain curs are awesome, and I hope nobody finds out 😂 these dogs certainly aren't always for the faint hearted.

I don't want this to turn into a weird promotion, but we have a (tiny.. TINY) IG and I would love to follow other MCs, so if you have social media, please drop it below! Hope everyone had a safe holiday, until next time! 🐾

We think he is part German shepherd and maybe mountain cur or boxer? What do you guys think? We would be interested in getting a dna test done just out of curiosity because it’s driving us mad trying to figure out what he is 😭

How to properly train/discipline(for lack of better word) mountain curs?

My boy is around 1 year and 3 months-ish, I keep him as exercised as I can and take him for multiple walks a day aswell as take him to a dog park where he can run as much as he wants to. I’ve gotten him a few toys he can chew on and play with but still, when I lock him out of the bedroom(so i can eat, have some space, spend time w my bf, etc.) he seemingly specifically Looks for something that isnt his toys to chew up and destroy :0 I’ve never been very harsh with him as my family was harsh to their dogs, I don’t wanna be like that, I just give him a very light pat kinda on his butt above his tail and tell him no. He understands he’s not supposed to do that but this method isn’t making him stop, so maybe I’m doing something wrong

Any and all advice is appreciated, thank you

Edit! Thank you so much, I’ll stop hitting his butt altogether and get a crate. Once I get enough saved up, I’ll get him signed up for a good training program

Treeing and guarding MC

I’ve been working and camping in the mountains in Colorado. I take my MC Julio with me and I must say it’s not by mistake they are called Mountain Curs. He is so tuned in, he lets me know when anyone is around or any animal is around. He shows me which trees the turkeys are roosting in. He is constantly treeing squirrels and he has treed bears twice. Both times he was running the mama bear off and in the process he treed a cub. On one of the first nights up here I had not pitched a tent yet and was sleeping in my work van when At 2:00 am a bear opened the sliding door and Julio met the bear face to face with his howling bear bark. He commenced to chasing the bear all over the mountain side far a half an hour. He’s dug bathtub shaped nests all around the perimeter and prefers to sleep outside so he can guard the campsite. He has a different bark for cats and bears and squirrels and turkeys. His nose and the speed he track is unlike any other dog breed I’ve seen hunting. He’s about 8 years old now and shows very little signs of slowing down. His vertical jump is not as it used to be but he can still easily do over ten miles of running in the morning and his guard duties has him running in 15-30 minute high speed chases at night. I’m getting older an I hope to have to energy to have one more mc in my lifetime.

What's "fun" for MC dogs (hunting type dogs)?

This is our dog, she is 60% MC, 20% APBT, and the rest is hound (coonhound, treeing walker). She is a great hunter (squirrel, bunnies, chipmunks). She has started to do zoomies with us, she likes walks. But I can't figure out what is FUN for hunting dogs. I've had herding breeds who loved going on walks where they would look at you adoringly and 'protect' you, a spitz (very into playtime like tug, catching a bouncing ball), terriers who love the thrill of the hunt (even with fake prey like squeaky toys), and a scent hound who loved to track.

But this dog ... Likes to walk but couldn't care less who is at the other end of the leash. Zero interest in plush toys, or a ball, or a frisbee. I am thinking there must be some form of entertainment I am not aware of - something hunting breeds love to do. She is my first hunting dog (or dog of hunting lineage). We only have so many bunnies and chipmunks in the yard to act as 'playmates'.

Morning musings.

I find myself this morning outside after a storm, letting my pint sized terrorist run around, and socialize with my older dogs. She would love nothing more than to wake up the nearly 2 year old grocery goblin (my son) for play and snacks but that would irritate mama bear, and as a good southern Appalachin, we know not to poke the bear.

I find myself reflecting on dogs of the past I've owned and think of dogs of the future. I think of conversations I've had with old timers of the breed and think back on the stories they shared. Where the breed came from, where its going, how dogs past and dogs now are so different.

I know I'm of the minority on this sub that hunt using their curs, but as a majority the history and culture of curs comes from hunting. I'd like to share a podcast with the group called Tree Talking Media. The gentleman who hosts it does a lot of interviews with old timers and big names of the cur breed. A lot of history and wisdom to be shared within it. (He also talks hounds but we won't hold that against him.) At the bottom I'll post a link where he speaks to Robert Kemmer, a man who has done some much for the breed and has probably forgotten more information on curs than most know.

Hope you all have a great day.
