Medieval Nights - Live on Kickstarter... (and, a question...)

Medieval Nights is now live on Kickstarter (here) - and anthology of ten adventures for a medieval fantasy setting based on real medieval stories (poems, legends, and "true stories"). There is a core book, plus a rules booklet for Mythras Imperative (or if you prefer, Ars Magica or DnD).

When we did House of the Crescent Sun the Mythras rules, stats and guidelines were in a black and white PDF, with no print version. For this we wanted there to be a glossy, full-colour premium printed booklet of the Mythras rules and stats. So, all backers get the full colour Mythras rules as a PDF, and there's the option to get a physical book, too.

The focus is on telling genuinely medieval stories, drawn from actual medieval sources, to give players a rich, unusual set of stories that are firmly rooted in the medieval world.

The full list of stories in the anthology is:

  • Famine and Pestilence - the dead are walking, and spreading pestilence with them (from an incident recounted in the Annals of Burton Abbey).
  • The Witch of Berkley - a woman has made a deal with the forces of hell, but does not want to pay the price (from the Gesta Regum Anglorum of William of Malmesbury).
  • Cold Christmas - creatures crawl from the darkness to plunder a snowbound farm (based on the Icelandinc legends of Gryla).
  • Wolfpit Gate - after a fire at a church, two strange children wander through the fields of a sleepy village (based on the "true story" of The Green Children of Woolpit).
  • The Devil at the Cradle - the couple's two previous children were murdered on the night of their birth, and now a third has been born and must be protected (another "true story", this one from the 12th Century writer Walter Map).
  • The Faithful Wolf - a story of loyalty, betrayal, and a man trapped in the body of a wolf (based on a tale by the 12th Century author, Marie de France).
  • Stolen Hearts - robberies from a cluster of remote farms lead to a story of dark magics and subjugation (based on a passage from the 10th Century bishop Burchard of Worms).
  • The Cloak of Beards - chasing down a kidnapper sounds simple, but when the brigand has the strength of 20 men victory may require heroic efforts (based on an episode in Geoffrey of Monmouth's History of the Kings of Britain).
  • A Night At Rose Hall - a roleplaying-only (no combat) pair of incidents based on love and romance (weaving together several medieval stories - Chaucer's Wife of Bath's Tale, the Arthurian Dame Ragnelle story, and Der Rosendorn.)
  • A Maiden's Honour - a maiden and a local knight vanished decades ago, but ever since the ghost of an angry knight has been seen in the woods (based on a story from Giovanni Boccaccio's 14th Century collection, The Decamaron).

If we beat the funding goal then we'll do even more stories as PDFs, starting with:

  • Morfynsland - a setting and story seeds that lets players explore a mysterious wild region called Saint Martin's Land, following on from the Wolfpit Gate (Green Children) story.
  • Predators and Prey - a sandbox story of a family of werewolves, based on the old Irish Cóir Anmann.

... but if the campaigns a massive success I'll happily do PDFs for another 10 or 20 stories - we've got a bunch in note form that didn't make it into the main anthology. So the better the campaign does, the more adventures will be included.

So, if that sounds intriguing, the Kickstarter page is here. Back it, or tell your friends (or both!) :-) The more backing we get the more I can write - so, thank you for your support!

Finally... as a question....

When I did The House of the Crescent Sun (a medieval fantasy campaign), most of the Kickstarter backers were Ars Magica fans... but when it went live on DriveThruRPG it was the Mythras version that people mainly bought. This makes me suspect that I'm very, very bad at reaching out to the Mythras community. So if anyone has any suggestions on how I can spread the word, I'd love to hear suggestion!

Are there rules for strangling an opponent in combat?

Grappling only mentions applying Damage Modifier and incurring penalties. However, I believe there was a mention of strangulation in Asphyxiation section, there is a garrotte weapon, and mummies are described as grappling and asphyxiating their victims. Are there any rules for manually asphyxiating an opponent?

Mythras Fatigue for hard labor

Hi, everyone! Thank you in advance for your help! I am planning to use Mythras as the backbone for a Dark Sun campaign. I know other people have done this, and the more I learned about the system, the more sense it made (plus I'm most comfortable with BRP-based systems).

Survival is a big deal in this setting and players will be battling the elements more often than bandits. This first session (loosely based on the original 1991 "Freedom" adventure) will be our chance to learn the system and set the tone of the world. The adventure is basically about escaping from enslavement.

So the initial days of the adventure, their main adversary is hot weather and labor. They have a chance of dehydration, too, if they fail to get their water rations. I want them to deal with increasing exhaustion and look for ways to cheat (take breaks when no one is looking, etc.), but I don't want to just make a million boring rolls, especially since the CON-based timers make tracking everyone individually really complicated.

The "manual labor" easy Endurance roll for fatigue in Mythras seems to assume that you'll work really hard for X minutes, get winded, and then you probably take a quick break. The rules primarily seem to have in mind either combat or travel for this system. I suppose you could use them for a race, like a John Henry kind of thing. But instead, I want to more simply figure out how fatigued people get each day within a few rolls and how much they recover before the next day. Ideally, the threat isn't one day of labor, but struggling subsequent days against increasing fatigue (for most of the characters, they will not be used to this weather or work). The conflict is about the slavers forcing players to work beyond their normal capacities.

Does anyone have any suggestions for streamlining the fatigue rules in a way that makes sense without rolling every 15 minutes of the day? My goal is to use the Mythras fatigue levels, have lower CON characters fatigue more quickly than high CON characters at a reasonable rate, make it feel sufficiently realistic, and roll as few times as possible. It should be a struggle for the majority of characters, causing them to come up with clever strategies to survive while they look for escape chances. Right now, I'm playing with using Standard rolls about 3 times a day, decreasing the grade if they manage to come up with a rest strategy during those periods (then following the usual increased difficulties as fatigue levels increase). But I don't know if I can balance it well enough myself and I think someone with more experience could probably come up with better interpretations of the existing system.

I really appreciate any ideas!

Is there a functional difference between Longbow and Recurve Bow?

I see that there is a small difference in HP, but that is all I see from the weapons chart. I am wondering if there is any further difference that I might be missing.

And a followup question would be, if I were to use one, would the 1 extra hp be worth it over the Longbow with the price difference? I don't believe I'm going to be parrying with the bow often lol.

factotum.fatman.dev

Hello! Long time no post. Many months ago I shared Factotum with you, which—at the time—was a combat tracker and dice roller. Well, I am very happy to be back with the biggest update yet introducing character generation!

There's too many features to list, but here's a few to highlight:

  • Create characters in the Mythras Imperative ruleset: Create characters using the Mythras Imperative tools! Factotum supports mundane, pulp heroic and paragon characters, as well as regular and skill pyramid skill allocations. It includes all the calculations for cultures, careers and their skills, limits your professional skill selections, allows you to select spells and
  • View a virtual character sheet: Each character has a virtual character sheet displaying everything you might need for playing your game. You can also enter into "Edit mode" and change every last detail of your character. The sheet also includes convenient calculations, like calculating your AP based on the best armour for each location.
  • Create custom content: Mythras Imperative items and spells aren't quite enough for you? You can create your own gear, armour, weapons and spells, which will be available to you when you create your characters. You can of course export and import this data, and the importer automatically detects any conflicting items you might have.
  • Other updates: There's been lots of other updates I've done since my last post here that I've been posting about on the Mythras Discord, such as supporting combat effects in the combat tracker and improving the Mythras Encounter Generator user experience. You can check them out in the changelog for more details.
  • And lots more: There's too many features to count, check it out for yourself!

Let me know what you think!

Manage up to 50 characters

Step-by-step character generation supporting may ways of creating characters

A detailed character sheet in play mode

The edit mode allows you to change most things about the character

Manage and create your own custom Mythras content

Automatically import exported data

The world is scarred, its surface criss-crossed with trenches that now serve as the homes to a thousand dying civilizations. You are no longer part of the same nations, in fact, nations don't exist anymore. People now serve their tribes, the remnants of military units, civilian refuges, factory complexes. Nothing stands in the world anymore, buildings are ancient myths, only ruins remain. Anyone trying to build anything up sees it destroyed by a shell. Instead people build down. Trenches, bunkers, caves, cisterns,
underground complexes; these are the weakened but still beating heart of humanity in this dark time... And those that still live in them want to finish The War.
Your ancestors started the Great War, and to satisfy their honor and yours you shall finish it. The war no longer is fought over nations or ideologies, some diviners and scholars may speak of it, but it is esoteric to most. The Great War is spiritual now, present in the hearts of all people.
Under nights lit by star shells and the streak of tracer rounds you will pay with your blood and leave your descendants to pay the same price. Are you ready to make the final sacrifice?
