Placement supplies

P/J stream
What would you recommend to start getting in preparation for student teaching placements in the fall (laminator? Arts and craft supplies?)

I'm wondering if it would be wise to start seeking out deals and start a stock pile for when placements roll around

If you've already been through a placement I'm P/J, what supplies did you use?

worth applying after health issues and uoft killed my GPA?

i had a bumpy undergrad with health issues and 1 really bad year in particular dragging down my entire degree average. However, if some schools look at my top 10 full credits--my average for that is a 77-78%. Even the schools that look at just top credits--am i still a bad candidate because of my overall gpa (its like a 69%). I did an education studies minor which had me do a 100 hour internship in a kindergarten classroom, and i volunteered a bit at a pediatric speech-language pathology clinic. I did a psych major and linguistcs minor as well. getting an honours BSc. I'm applying for the next cycle this fall (programs starting in May). I wanna teach Primary. should i even apply? would it be worth taking a couple summer courses to boost my top 10 credit average to an 80? I can explain my health circumstances but don't have super solid proof as it was a complicated autoimmune disease. I do have a strong upward trend in my degree that reflects a turnaround point after i discovered how to cure myself. I'd like to go to western or uoft but i know it's competitive. My school (uoft) is notorious for marking harshly but idk if teacher colleges care at all 😞 --like commonly in psych courses I'd get like a B, however the course average for the class would be a C or even C-... My transcipt shows course averages so that may put my average in context. Anyone with a similar profile that got in? Also do schools care if you did some semesters part-time? Should i try other provinces--Ualberta is somewhat appealing to me. Can i save myself for western by studying well for the Casper?

Which university is generally better for teacher education?

I'm currently in grade 12 and I just got waitlisted for queen's coned science so right now my options are between UTSC, Western, and Brock coned. I want to be a high school teacher with my teachables being bio and social sciences so I was wondering which one would be generally better in terms of quality and transition into the workforce?
Thanks for any responses.

Jobs within the school board while in the concurrent BEd program

I am going into Year 2/5 for the concurrent BEd program, the majority of my courses are online for the first 3 years, minus a few related to the BEd portion.

Currently, I doing DoorDash, it was working for me at the beginning of the year… But with the gas prices and people not buying as much fast food as they used to for obvious reasons, this is a perpetual hell for me.

I need out, ASAP. The problem is my monthly bill output is around $2400 a month. So I need something that will at least support that, and be flexible enough where I can do my few in class courses.

I understand that I will technically be eligible for the uncertified supply teacher at the end of next year, however, I’m looking for something… anything when it comes to ideas of what else I could be doing starting this year.

Has anyone been in the same boat as myself? I am a 32-year-old mature student, SCDSB is the district closest to me, I drive and I have like 13 years of retail/sales management experience!

Do not got to Western BED!!

Just thought I’d put out a small PSA against western as someone who’s there right now. A part from the mundane classes which happen everywhere and student drama ( we’ve had people kicked out for bullying and racism ) the summer term is set up horribly specifically the AFE section. Western requires 210 hours ( 7 weeks full time ) in two different sectors of alternate field experience.

They lay out a period in the summer that you can use to complete it but you need to find the placements yourself. They can also deny them ( any international placements, placements they deem not educational enough or here’s the kicker placements you’ve worked at before ) Most people especially mature students are having to take leaves of absence from their jobs or risk paying an extra semester of tuition. You can theoretically find placements during the summer courses term or before as early as February but if it interferes with any classes ( ie, having to skip, you cannot do that AFE) It’s also possible to have an AFE that you’ve had accepted be rescinded and cancelled. Failure to complete your AFE’s by August 14th will result in a delayed graduation and an extra semester of tuition with no Additional classes.

For reference only a select few schools also do AFE’s and their limit is set to 60hrs whereas western wants 7 weeks full time as described in their emails. Many students are currently panicking and talking about it and the whole thing is one big mess. If you can go to a different school even if it’s a 2yr program you’d be doing yourself a huge favour. Western at the moment is very unorganized and I’ve yet to hear a student praise the program yet.

Side note: The Practicums have been great in my experience but it’s obviously a mixed bag and has nothing to do with western.

Catholic School Elective in TC

Hello everyone! I’m currently enrolled as a TC and there’s an elective course on Catholic education offered at my school. They said it’s an “asset” to teach in the Catholic boards, but that it doesn’t replace the required AQ. I wanted to know if that course is actually considered an asset and if it will improve/impact my chances of getting hired in the board.

Thank you!

Your feedback on the Ontario tech B Ed program please!

Specifically, how intense is the program given its an accelerated 16 month program? How many days are you expected on campus? I’ll be commuting and I worry about the work load and commute. Any insight and experience welcome!!

Laurier Waterloo B. Ed

I’ve been accepted here for September. Can anyone give me honest feedback on their program, profs, workload? I know they have the most practicum time but maybe that’s not always a good thing (ie more work, same outcome?). Thoughts?

uOttawa Waitlist Movement and Application Advice

I was waitlisted the day decisions came out in February and have heard of no movement since. Has anyone heard of people getting off the waitlist (not in FSL streams)? I emailed admissions but uOttawa is historically opaque with wait list information, so I'm not holding my breath.

Some info about me: I was waitlisted for uOttawa B.Ed for J/I English. I had a 3.8 GPA (10.6 CGPA) on my top 20 courses, and a 3.5 GPA overall (9.6 CGPA). I have a Bachelor of Global and International Studies with a Specialization in Teaching English in Global Contexts, a Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language, and a Master's in International Development and Globalization.

I worked as a daycare supply teacher for a year during my undergrad, I completed an 8 month student teaching practicum in LINC 1 and 4 programs, I helped with ESL instruction in an IELTS prep course, was a section leader in my high school marching band for four years teaching peers to play their instrument and march, was a trainer at my last job in a public-facing fundraising role, and am currently responsible for the development of training and onboarding material in my role in the public sector at a large federal government department. My two references were both teachers whose classrooms I taught in during my CTESL certification.

I thought I had a relatively competitive application and was a little disappointed to receive a Wait List offer. I know that the competition changes from year to year, but I would be grateful for any additional advice or input to help me strengthen my application for next year, should the waitlist not move. Next round of applications, I would also apply to P/J in addition to J/I English. Thank you for your help!

Laurier BEd Waterloo 2026 — Housing Advice / Potential Roommates?

Hey everyone! I recently got accepted to the BEd program at Wilfrid Laurier University on the Waterloo campus for Fall 2026.

I’m excited, but honestly pretty nervous about housing since I’ve heard the Waterloo rental market can get competitive 😭 Does anyone have advice on where BEd students usually live, when I should start looking, or any good places/companies to check out?

Also, if anyone else is going into Laurier BEd and wants to maybe look for housing/roommates together, feel free to message me!!

What are the requirements to have French as a second teachable subject?

I am entering my first year as a Bachelor of music student at Western and I hope to apply to Westerns B. Ed after graduation from this program. I want to have Music as my primary teachable and French as my second teachable. I have been researching about what the required courses are and I know it says that I need 5.0 credits in French or I can pass the B2 DELF exam. I have found it very confusing to figure out what is required of me to have French as a second teachable subject. Can anyone who has gone through having French as their primary or secondary teachable subject help me out on understanding this?

Teaching Subject Requirements(Engineering graduate)

I am a computer engineering graduate and am looking to apply to teachers college for the May 2027 - May 2028 School Year. I've been doing research about admissions requirements and i have some concern as to whether ill be eligible for my ideal subjects.

I'm looking to apply to the I/S stream for Mathematics as my first teaching subject and Physics as my second. My concern is that due to the wording on most of the universities websites i wont be eligible. Wording below.

  1. For your first teaching subject, five (5.0) full or equivalent undergraduate or graduate credits, with a minimum average of 70%, are required. We'll accept no more than two (2.0) full or equivalent related credits.

All of my eligible credits were obtained through either the faculty of engineering or computing, which seem to be considered related credits. (APSC, ELEC and CMPE course codes).

I'm hoping that someone here was in a similar situation and can help clear my doubts about how my credits would be considered? I'm planning to write emails to the admissions offices as well, but am not counting on them.

Male Practicum Outfit Inspiration??

Hello!!

My first day of Practicum is TOMORROW (GR12 English & Creative Writing)!!! I've been told a variety of different things from different members of faculty regarding what (or what not) to wear for practicum; everything from we should be dressing more professionally than faculty, to "as long as you don't look like a high school student or in-school volunteer, you're good".

So much of what I see for appropriate student teaching attire posts are for feminine wardrobes, so I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of what's appropriate for masculine clothing??

My "practicum/future teaching attire" that I've been building includes polos (both knitwear and plain fabric), plain knit, patterned knit, or professional-looking graphic sweaters/quarter zips (to wear with dicky collars), and I've got clean straight-cut jeans & khakis that I was originally planning on wearing but have been second-guessing since being told a variety of different dress code rules.

If anyone has advice it would be much appreciated!!

Trent Waitlist

Is anyone still on the waitlist for Trent’s P/J program? My last email stated that if a final decision was made I would hear back early May. Does anyone know if this is the last round of offers or is there another round? Eager and tired of waiting but hoping for the best
