Laurentian University's cutting of the Intermediate & Senior Teacher Education stream was probably one of their worst decisions, especially now with a teacher shortage. (open discussion)

So I'm a prospective LU student, and I start in September 2027. After my 3-year BSc in Interdisciplinary Science, I will then pursue a Bachelor of Education (in French) with a goal of being a high school biology and chemistry teacher.

It would've been so much easier pre-2021, when they had a designed teacher education stream offered in Intermediate & Senior Divisions (Grades 7-12)

Now, you need to do your base qualification in Junior & Intermediate divisions (Grades 4-10), then take ADDITIONAL qualification courses that are almost $800 per course to get your qualification in the senior division.
Teachers are needed in all streams, not just Junior & Intermediate Divisions. It's an inconvenience, especially being one of the few universities that offer a French BEd program...

This is dumb, and I can't be the only one to feel this way, and it breaks me that I'll need to spend extra money over and above my tuition to get the same qualifications I could've gotten in 2021 but faster.

Ontario Tech B.Ed. (Waitlist) – Accepted July 3, Deposit Deadline July 5... Am I okay?

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone has been in a similar situation or has some insight.

I was admitted off the Ontario Tech B.Ed. waitlist on June 29 and officially accepted my offer through OUAC on July 3. The OUAC acceptance deadline was July 5, so I accepted before the deadline.

However, when I try to pay the tuition deposit, the Ontario Tech portal says that I need to wait up to 3 working days for my OUAC acceptance to be processed before I can make the payment. Since I accepted on Friday, July 3, those 3 working days won't pass before the July 5 deposit deadline.

I'm worried that I won't be able to pay simply because the system hasn't updated yet.

A few questions:

  • Has anyone else experienced this after being admitted from the waitlist?
  • Is Ontario Tech usually flexible with the deposit deadline in situations where the delay is caused by OUAC processing?
  • If I accepted through OUAC before the July 5 deadline, is that all that matters, even if Ontario Tech doesn't receive the processed acceptance until a few business days later?
  • My offer also says my Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) was due June 1, which was before I even received my offer on June 29. Is that just a standard date for all applicants, or will they give students admitted from the waitlist a new deadline?

I have already contacted Admissions and explained the situation, but since it's the weekend I'm anxiously waiting for a response.

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through something similar. Thank you!

How to become a School teacher? Am i even eligible?

Is it possible for me to get an admission for B.ed. ?
I am 34M and a permanent resident living in Toronto since Feb 2023. I graduated High School in 2009 (India). I also completed my Bachelor of Business Administration in 2012 (India) and Master of Arts Marketing Management in 2016 (India). My CGPA was always less than 70%. I have transcripts of both the degrees vetted by WES, they gave me double bachelors. I also learnt French language from 2010 till 2013 at Alliance Francaise in India till C1 level. I have my IELTS general test report (2022) with an overall band score of 7.5. I have over 5 years of experience working with different digital marketing agencies in India as client manager.

Since 2023, after moving to Canada, I have struggled to find any meaningful job and I am now looking for a career change/fresh start and guidance from you as to what all I need to do to get an admission in a B.ed. program? I have always loved languages and want to teach English and French even if it's from Kindergarten-Grade 6 or what you call Primary/Junior.

I am considering these universities: Brock, Redeemer, Tyndale, Niagara, Ontario Tech, University of Ottawa, Wilfred Laurier and York if I can even get an admission. Not sure if OSAP covers private universities’ fees or not but tuition funding is also something I need to think about if I can get a student loan or not. My wife works in Downtown Toronto and has to go office at least twice a week so I can't look at other universities where GoTrain doesn't go or commute time is too much from Union station.

Looking for advice from people who are studying / people who have graduated / people who are working or if someone has been in a similar situation?.Your guidance will be highly appreciated.

Tech Ed question

Hello All, I am looking at making a career change and becoming a teacher. After some research I have learned of tech Ed. I love the idea of using my 10+ years in the fine art/museum world in teaching but unsure if that would qualify for any of the streams. Any insights or similar experiences?

I see tourism and hospitality as an option but the more I look at that, it seems to be more cooking/baking oriented. Maybe there's something I am missing?

How do I become a French Teacher in Ontario?

Considering a mid-30s career change and looking for some direction. I have a Bachelor of Applied Science from Guelph with a minor in Psychology and have been working in healthcare as a Recreation Therapist for over 10 years with patients of all ages. I completed late immersion (starting in grade 5) all the way to grade 12 and took a 0.5 credit in French in university. My skills are rusty but I think I could pick it up again.

Obviously I’ll need to apply for a BEd, but how do I go about making French my “teachable”? Where can I get this type of qualification?

Thanks for the guidance!

Anyone get into Ontario Tech P/J B.Ed with a 3-year bachelors degree?

Hi everyone! Hope you’re doing well. 😊
I am planning to apply for the Primary/Junior (P/J) B.Ed stream at Ontario Tech University as a domestic student. I have an international 4-year bachelors (Honours) degree in English Literature, but my WES evaluation assessed it as a 3-year Canadian Bachelor’s degree. My CGPA is 3.95/4.
I know Ontario Tech officially accepts 3-year degrees but states that preference is given to 4-year honours degrees.
Has anyone successfully gotten into the P/J stream with a 3-year bachelors degree?

I would love to hear your experiences or any advice you have. Thank you so much!

Can't get into teachers college in Ontario

My daughter has applied for teacher's college at York, U of T and U.O.I.T. and been turned down everywhere. I can't really understand this. She is interested in the primary program. She graduated with high distinction from U of T and made the dean's list every year she was there. On top of that she has worked at summer camps every summer since she was 16 and taught various part time programs for the city through the school year. What is she missing? She will apply again next year and is planning on broadening her search. Fair bit of talk about Lakehead and Windsor being easier to get in to. Anyone have any thoughts or advise?

Construction Tech programs

Asking for my significant other -

Has anyone successfully applied to a tech program /bachelor of ed. With no bachelor's degree?

My s/o has tons of experience in construction and works in a trade but does not have a university degree. I have checked entrance to these programs and it seems doable but is there anything else we should know? Any advice for someone who is not necessarily a "school person" in terms of assignments but would be an awesome tech teacher? He would be applying to schools in the GTA.

Also - pay scale- I work as a secondary teacher so I'm somewhat familiar but how does having no bachelor's degree affect future pay if he is hired as a teacher? I'm assuming he would be at A1 but his years of experience in the field would count as steps up in his years? TIA
