Did you pick up an Arkfeld Ultra at 50% off? Is it your first one or a spare ?
I've recently gotten into Olight and as a ... person who spends too much time on some things ... that naturally led me down the rabbit hole of trying to understand OAL (Olight's "proprietary" aluminum). FWIW, this post was written entirely by me, a human, with no assistance from AI. Any and all mistakes are my own :)
The purpose of this post is to share why it appears that the Olive Green ("OG") finish is the most durable OAL finish as of summer 2026.
I'm not an expert here - just sharing what I've seen/found. There is so much marketing fluff out there that it can be hard to discern what's real and what's not. I'm hoping that people will see this and that it may help them in making a decision. It would have helped me had this been out there when I first started looking at OAL lights.
I also want to be clear - I'm not saying that the non-OG finishes are terrible. They're still going to provide a durable finish, even if not quite as high-performing as OG.
And this is almost purely cosmetic. The OAL lights, like normal Olights, will perform well for years. I don't think the superior hardness of OAL has any non-cosmetic impact either - 6061 lights virtually never fail because the metal wasn't strong enough. I wouldn't buy OAL because I am worried about my 6061 light getting crushed. The internals will go bust from impact long before the aluminum fails.
If you want to get a non-OG OAL light, go for it! This post isn't for you. This is really just for people like me who are curious about the differences and want to make a bet as to which would be best performing finishes.
I don't have much new to share on OAL metallurgy. Some people claim it's just ordinary 7075, but Olight has stated officially that it's not. Others have said it's 7068. I don't know what it really is, but I assume they are telling the truth and that's it's not 7075 (though it could be something very close to that).
They have data backing this up:
| Material | Vickers Hardness (HV) | Application |
|---|---|---|
| 6061-T6 Aluminum | ~107 HV | Standard flashlights |
| 7075-T6 Aluminum | ~150–175 HV | Premium / tactical tools |
| OAL (O-aluminum) | 230 HV (1.73x harder than 6061) | Olight ArkPro Series |
What I really want to focus on here is the different color options. Two of Olight's claimed advantages from OAL relate to the surface finish specifically:
Naturally the question is, do these advantages differ by color? Based on what I've seen, the answer is an affirmative - OG is the most durable color.
We've seen some clear evidence of this over the years both anecdotally and more formally. One big data point was that Olight struggled initially to produce non-OG colors. The original blue batch of Arkfeld Ultra's was a bust and had to be clearanced because it didn't meet Olight's standards. Even after they fixed it, there have been a lot of reports of the blue OAL lights flaking and the coating overall not performing great (IIRC early Warrior Ultra had this issue).
The olive green OAL finish is unique among Olight’s anodized color options because it does not rely on added color pigments in the same way as the other dyed finishes. Instead, the olive appearance is achieved through the anodizing process itself.
This has an important practical benefit. In dyed anodized finishes, scratches and abrasion can gradually remove or damage the dyed surface, making wear more noticeable over time. Because the OAL finish does not depend on those pigments, there is no dye layer to fade or wear away. As a result, the finish tends to maintain a more consistent appearance even after extended use.
No anodized finish is immune to deep gouges or impacts that penetrate through the hard anodized layer to the underlying aluminum. Those types of damage will be visible regardless of color. However, for the normal wear associated with pocket carry and everyday use, the OG finish should retain its appearance longer than the dyed anodized finishes.
Do you guys prefer the green or black ArkPro Ultra? I was going to get the green but decided on the black because of the detailed finish. The more I see the green in photos the more I wish I would’ve gotten it. I’ve heard the black resists scratching better than the green but man the olive green looks sweet. Maybe I’ll end up buying the green as well but the Perun 3 and Seeker Ultra are on my list first.
Have been looking for a way to attach a small finger loop to my Ark Pro Ultra and finally decided to just drill a hole in the pocket clip. Took inspiration from my i5T
Long and laser or short and red light? Do you find that you need both spot and flood options? How often do you use UV?
Like if I only needed another O-pen. Now I have two oh well, I just couldn’t pass that latest sale 😅

worth it?
I read that the blue model had a bad anodizing finish; does anyone know if they've fixed it yet? I'm thinking of buying one in blue right now.
Is there a difference in resistance? Or are they currently the same?
Don't know why I thought it was going to be the same size ,but I now just hope I dont misplace it as its so dinky , but it does have some left to it
4 1/2 years later I'm finally getting things displayed. Still 2 more shelves to organize. And already need another bookshelf.
Olight wishes a Happy Canada Day to our OFans in the North. Enjoy the celebrations today!
Didn't get lucky enough to get it free as the login gift so ordered it separately. 👍
