Arkpro Ultra vs original Arkfeld

Does anyone else find the original Arkfeld or Arkfeld Pro—specifically the activation switch—much easier to use than the switch on the Ultra? Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the upgraded battery, options for throw and flood and the increased durability of the Ultra. The issue is that I frequently wear gloves on the job and have noticed that it’s more of a chore to activate my Ultra vs the Pro. The switch on the Ultra is somewhat countersunk/recessed vs the slight protrusion on the Pro.

How many parents here have taken a good summer vacation this year?

Summer has been a bit of a bummer for us. The families with young children in our middle class neighborhood have all gone on really nice summer vacations this year—Europe, Disney, cross country trips, etc. Meanwhile, my wife lost her job last year and we’re down to a single income. There’s simply no way we can afford the $10-$15K needed for a nice vacation. (This comfortable budget assumes airfare, eating out, sightseeing, lodging etc).

My sample size is admittedly small, so I wanted to see where my fellow Millennials stand on summer trips. Are you sitting this one out? What do you have planned?

Looking for the biggest multitool available.

I own the Multper MP2049 and it’s the best multitool I’ve ever owned, but I’m looking for something even bigger. I frequently use gloves at work, and having a big, beefy multitool is my preference.

From my understanding, the MP2049 is itself a Surge clone, and the Surge might be the biggest of its kind available. Is anyone aware of anything bigger?

Vaush commentary on trans genocide

On one of Vaush’s streams several weeks ago, I very briefly heard him mention something to the effect of right wing leaders, politicians and institutions laying the rhetorical groundwork for what would one day become institutionalized trans persecution and/or genocide.

Does anyone have any further insight into his thoughts on this issue? Links would be appreciated.

The Pensacola flyover incident is so illustrative of our national divide

tldr: the Blue Angels, the Navy’s aerial stunt group, performed a dangerously low flyover on a beach in Florida.

National media outrage ensued over this extremely risky stunt. I checked out some YouTube videos (mostly from local Florida news stations) and the comments were super interesting. People were absolutely enthralled with what happened. These were people who love big, brash displays of power and speed and the risk of injury associated with such displays. They sneered at the wimpy liberal media who made a mountain out of a molehill. Many comments praised American might, as though America were the only nation in possession of jet aircraft.

There’s a greater psychosocial and spiritual divide illustrated by these YouTube comments than I’m able to explore. I just think this same divide is what’s leading to our national divorce.

What happened to this industry?

In the aftermath of George Floyd, thousands of grifters and Ph.Ds and authors and race “experts” exploded into prominence. There were conferences and papers and dissertations all dedicated to discussing white guilt and white fragility. It became an entire industry. Decades of fringe academic thought, once isolated to private liberal arts colleges and tumblr threads, went mainstream.

Is there still a market for this guff? How do these people make a living in the age of Trump?

The multi-day hangover

I’m 36. Over the course of the July 4th holiday weekend, I consumed an amount of alcohol that I’m ashamed to admit. The hangxiety from this consumption was insane—my last drink was Saturday night, and I’m *just now* starting to feel better.

At what age did the punishing side affects from alcohol become too much to bear? And has it caused you to stop drinking entirely?

What is Nitecore’s endgame?

I just read ZeroAir’s review of the P17ix. According to their measurements, the light has a very middling sustain of 6-700 lumens for about 2 hours before crapping out. In a $40 Wurkkos this would be acceptable, but after taxes and shipping and grabbing an extra (proprietary 🤮) Nitecore cell, you’re looking at damn near $200 for a 700 lumen flashlight.

This isn’t the first Nitecore product to combine an innovative design with mediocre performance (looking at you, EDC29) so what exactly are these guys up to with these repeated disappointments?

School lunches and social status

At my school (somewhat well-to-do public school in the American south in the 90s-early 00s), kids whose parents were well-off/popular always brought their lunches to school in a lunch box or paper sack. Poor children ate prepared hot meals in the cafeteria.

My wife, a native New Englander, had the opposite experience—wealthy kids ate from the cafeteria, while poor kids ate from a lunch box.

This is just a funny conversation we had and I wanted to read about others’ experiences around the country.

Has Vaush ever mentioned writing a book?

I’m a former Trump voter. Vaush, among others, has been instrumental in my transition to left wing thought. Has he ever mentioned writing a book detailing his political philosophy? I’d happily read it if he did.

Nitecore P27ix vs Acebeam L35 2.0

I’ve lurked and posted here long enough to know this sub’s stance on most Nitecore lights (overpriced and middling quality) and the L35v2 (legendary). Still, the P27ix looks freaking amazing.

I already own the Acebeam. Does the P27ix compare, or does the L35 still stand alone after all these years?

Should the state/municipalities do controlled burns?

If anyone here is educated on forest ecology, I welcome their opinion as I’d love to understand this topic better.

I live in the heavily wooded eastern half of the state. To my untrained eye, it seems as though the woods are in desperate need of a series of low-intensity wildfires. Not necessarily for fire prevention, but to burn out the briars, brambles, detritus, countless rotting trees, invasive species, pest insects etc. that seem to have overtaken the forest floor.

My research into other forest systems shows that when a forest is never allowed to experience a fire here and there, it is overwhelmed with impenetrable scrub that overtakes more established trees and effectively chokes out the undergrowth.

Obviously, the difficulty and risks of executing these burns might answer my own post, but I’d love to know if the state has implemented controlled burns in the past or at least toyed with the idea.

AWU 2 ruined by seawater

Replacement through AppleCare already on its way, but wanted to see if anyone else has experienced a device failure after exposure to seawater. I went swimming in the ocean the other week for probably the 3rd or 4th time since I’ve owned the watch, and within just a few minutes of exposure my AWU2 started going haywire.

I rinsed the watch in fresh water to get the salt out like I always do. I took it home and threw it on the charger to see what would happen and it began to get extremely warm. Took it to Apple to process the replacement and now waiting on new one.

Aren’t these supposed to be diving watches? I’m a little disheartened knowing that such an expensive device rated for a marine environment died after being used as such.

Is there a name for this paradox?

Those of us in the trades are intimately familiar with the “hierarchy” that exists in companies both large and small.

The people who plan the work, analyze the work, make PowerPoints about the work, sell the work, manage the work, have meetings about the work, etc etc etc are almost universally held in higher esteem than the skilled tradespeople actually *performing* the work.

Why do you think this is, and what are some examples of this you’ve seen at your company?

Should all Sofirn/Wurkkos lights be re-soldered before use?

This question is inspired by the recent post of a guy who sneezed on his fc11c and it nearly exploded. (/s) Informed users of these lights know they’re a good bargain but somewhat shoddily assembled. Does anyone else here “harden” them by re-soldering any and all wire connections to increase impact resistance?

Height is the primordial truth (4Chan)

You are a slave to a world that judges you based on characteristics you didn't choose, and against which you can never do anything. Height isn't just a measurement in centimeters. It's a divine verdict, a social brand that determines your worth before you even open your mouth.

Women themselves confess it in street interviews, unfiltered and without hesitation: they prefer a tall, unattractive man to a short, handsome one. It's visceral, instinctive, uncontrollable. Their bodies choose before their brains.

If you're tall, doors open by themselves. You inherit a VIP ticket to respect, desire, natural authority, and attraction. Eyes glide over you with deference. Women become more easily aroused, men fear you or admire you without even knowing why, even with the most bland personality imaginable. You didn't deserve anything, but nature crowned you. You win by default.

It's mind boggling to think that a country like Japan, for example, where most men are shorter, if it were ever invaded by hundreds of millions of much taller men, almost all Japanese women would betray their people in the blink of an eye to sleep with the invaders, and Japan would disappear. Culture, history, loyalty, national pride? Everything would go up in smoke in the face of the animal instinct that screams: "Tall = better sperm, better protection, better genetics." The photo of MacArthur and the Emperor of Japan side by side wasn't taken by accident; it was done to humiliate the Japanese people: "Looking at your 5'5" God next to a 6'1" American" (the reason for the photo has been documented; it wasn't a coincidence, it was for humiliation).

Beach madness

Took the family to Rocky Neck beach this morning. We were among the first there and easily staked out a nice spot.

We left around 2:00 after the park was shut down to additional cars. Anyone familiar with the area knows that it’s a good 4-5 minute drive to the beach area, so imagine my shock when I saw scores of people *walking* 20+ minutes from wherever they’d parked to the beach—many of them carrying tons of crap! Like is the beach *really* that worth it??

Just amazed at some people’s poor planning contrasted with their dedication in pursuit of a mediocre goal lol.
