Regarding Gavin Newsom

What specifically is wrong with him. I am probably outing myself as a bit of a plebe but I would like to know specifically what, according to the Vaush community makes Gavin Newsom so bad. Is it just or mainly that he is an establishment democrat? If it is, that I understand, but is it just that? My dad thinks Gavin Newsom would be great for president and I don’t know how to explain to him that I don’t think he is radical enough to make any real change. Then I asked myself what I actually personally think about Newsom specifically and realized I dismissed him primarily because Vaush does. I’m not very good at judging candidates, either because I have been really dissociated from the nitty gritty of politics and political partially because my mental health has been somewhat touch and go, so I could use a few more precise prescriptions on what to look for in a candidate.

Sooner or later this will end in a lynching, an actual good old fashioned American-style lynching : Police and political leaders in Northern Ireland call for calm after Belfast knife attack

I really wish Vaush didn't have to cover stuff like this but in this instance I think he should - it seems really bad & the summer period is always tense as is - thank you Orange Order

Vaush may Have Given up too Soon on Steyer’s Chances

I know Vaush was disappointed with the primary results last week but looking at how things have been moving Steyer is within 216,000 votes to take over Hilton with over one million ballots left to count. I know his biggest disappointment was about the lack of younger people voting due to voter apathy created by the Dems.

Depending on if Steyer gets the 2nd spot I’m wondering if the youth vote was mostly mail-in ballots now since they’d be more likely to vote for him over Becerra. We’ll see.

Just like how Nithya came in second a few days after the primary election. I didn’t like that she joined the race on the last day to screw over Rae Huang but she was the “progressive” that had the better chance. So it’s very possible Steyer can win

The Right to Bear Arms

I was watching Vaush's stream yesterday and he started talking about how people don't know how big arms are when cropped out of context and he made some truly wild claims, the most quantitative of which was "Arm #3 is 18 maybe 19 inches"
I may be a casual gymbro but I am a serious engineer so I got nerd sniped and spent the last hour answering the question. I took photos of my arm, posed as close as I could to the original, and photoshopped it at the same length scale in between #2 and #3. Then I measured the pixel width of each arm at both the upper arm and forearm and scaled these to tape measurements of my actual arm, which was 15" flat around the bicep and 13-3/8" around the forearm.

The results? Assuming the arms are the same length and shape as mine, they would be
#1 9.7" bicep, 10.2" forearm
#2 13.2" bicep, 13.0" forearm
#3 14.6" bicep, 15.2" forearm
#4 16.6" bicep, 17.0" forearm
#5 19.5" bicep, 21.0" forearm

For reference, I'm 6'1" 185-190lb, wingspan 6'2", with a 33" long arm (acromion to fingertip), est. 13% bf. For taller people and longer arms I think it'd be fair to scale the arm circumferences linearly.

Comments:
- It's true that all these pictures are quite lean, ranging from about the same me for #1 and bodybuilder-on-stage for #5. It's fair to say that all these arms represent physiques much leaner than a normal person.
- Arm #1 at <10" circumference is borderline unrealistic for an adult man. It would almost have to be like a teenager just after their growth spurt or extremely thin endurance athlete or a malnourished person.
- The forearms are insane. Look at the brachioradialis bulges. All the pictured arms have scaled forearms circumferences comparable to or greater than their biceps. This is a very unusual proportion, representing professional rock climbers and arm wrestlers, and lends a lot to the feeling of inhumanity of the pictures, especially towards the upper end. There are only a handful of people in the entire world with 21" forearms like Levan Saganashvilli, Andrey Smaev, Jeff Dabe, and all of them have *vastly* bigger biceps than the picture, and also carry much more fat. In that sense, picture #5 is maybe truly impossible. The original picture was probably generated by AI and didn't capture a super accurate sense of human proportions.

Addressing some other claims:
- Lebron James / Michael Phelps is between #1 and #2
I can't find any data on Phelps but Lebron has 17" arms and a 7 foot wingspan. Scaled down to my wingspan his arms would be 14.97", which lands him between #3 and #4. Though his forearms are definitely closer to #2 as discussed above.
- Arm #3 is not just a normal fit guy it's an extremely muscular person. They would not just be in the top 5% of physiques it'd be in the top <1%
I don't have good population level data but I can say that I'm a pretty normal fit guy and I train mostly for rowing cycling and bouldering, not specifically hypertrophy. I routinely encounter people with bigger arms than me everywhere.
- People are bad at judging the size of body parts out of context of the whole person
I guess this is true, specifically if he's talking about himself and the many commenters who said things like they were "#1 on the scale" or "#3 and above are on steroids". In contrast I think the girls being interviewed who answered between 2 and 4 were pretty good judges of proportions and they were basically saying they like lean men of roughly average size. Realistically he and much of his community just wanted an excuse to dunk of gymbros so they made up the necessary premises to facilitate that.

Vaush is correct but; The Buck

I feel like the underlying thing about a lot of contractor bloat is misunderstood. While I won't deny graft and bloat, the reason this (and a lot of other industries) are fucked up is due to:

Legal Liability

The reason that everyone has 35 different specialized subcontractors and is bloated and inefficient is because if your project breaks/kills someone, you have to find who to sue into the dirt. The buck doesn't stop with anyone and you throw it in a bloathole until the angry party goes away in confusion

This is the same thing as to a lot of bloat in medicine, but you could also argue that a lot of the reason shit is expensive is due to the cost of human life in America

Vaush is definitely on the right track, but I personally feel like he misses this aspect and hope he addresses it

If you like this Vaush video, read Player Piano

In my favorite Vonnegut novel, prettymuch the whole country has been automated, leaving a class of a handful of educated administrators and a class of manual laborers - both only have to do things people haven't yet figured out how to automate.

The educated enjoy a fulfilling life of challenge and reward, the latter become frustrated at a lack of meaning and some seek a revolution to destroy the technology that lets them work only a few hours a week.

Instead of exploring the overt oppression by a ruling bourgeoisie, Vonnegut asks what happens to people when they cannot labour, when one's living is completely disconnected from purpose.

It's not just the topic that I love, its HILARIOUS. I think all Vonnegut novels should be made into Cohen Brothers films. I highly recommend.

Why is the Whole Economy Just Coffee Shops?

I saw one of Vaush's videos, and thought this was a more indebth explanation of the phenomenon. It also gives a better explanation of the origin and ramifications than vaush gave.

Since we're doing arm discourse this is what 15.5 inches flexed looks like on a Gymbro Vaushite

Vaush is completely right about how warped people's perspectives are. I'm a big dude, and I'm a 2 on this chart. Tops. 3 is borderline not achievable naturally without elite one in a million genetics and an eating disorder.

Why do far leftists not take women seriously?

Hello hello, it's me again with a semi-provocative post title! I'm in the hospital this week because I just got bottom surgery, so I'm bored and only slightly informed on the news.

I wanted to first ask about all the stuff with Platner that's been going on recently. I don't think Vaush has said anything particularly untoward, but the way that people have been talking about it has left a really bad taste in my mouth. Of course it's meant to damage his candidacy. Of course if I were a Maine voter, I'd still vote for him (I'm vote blue no matter who, baby!) But it also would make me wary to support progressives like him in future primaries, especially progressive men. IF the accusations are true, the way that some on the far left have been dismissing them as "no big deal" or "not actually abuse" just feels...not great. They still have plenty of reasons to continue supporting Platner's candidacy without being so dismissive towards stuff that a lot of women have to deal with from men in relationships.

The other thing I wanted to ask about was the comic/movie Persepolis, which I haven't seen but a lot of people are talking about online now that the artist has recently passed. My friend said we can watch the movie next week while I'm recovering! I don't know why, but a lot of far leftists (ie tankies) have accused it of being "imperialist propaganda" despite its themes mostly being about women's empowerment under a theocratic regime. The way that some leftists talk about liberal feminism, it feels an awful lot like they just don't care about women's rights and just see us as acceptable sacrifices to the leftist cause (the same way some of them talk about trans rights, for the record.) I really don't care that Western conservatives use it in bad faith as a pretext to attack Iran and other Islamic countries - oppression of women is bad! It's not that hard!

So yeah, that was all. If you're a normal leftist who supports women and wasn't saying the things I described, you're cool! But for everyone else, I just have to ask, why???

A Big Thanks to The Streamer For Pushing Canvassing

I would've never canvassed before I got involved in this community. Today, I just got done knocking on around 75 doors in about 2 hours. It wasn't always fun, my legs are certainly feeling it, but I got to spread the good word about a local politician in a neck-and-neck race, and I got to remind a few people that they need to vote.

Now to eat some rice and beans.

What happened to OKBV?

I just tried to search for it and only found a past post from the subreddit. When I tried to reach it that way, it was unavailable. Is it gone? If so, why? I know he hasn’t done a segment for like years I think: is that why?
