Reuzel Extreme reformulation is too weak/mushy. Need a high-hold, volume-neutral matte alternative for thick black hair

Reuzel Extreme Hold Matte Pomade used to be my go-to, but the newer version feels noticeably different. The jar consistency is much softer, and the hold seems much weaker in my hair.

Looking at the ingredient lists, the main change seems to be that propylene glycol moved higher up, while heavier/waxier components like Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2 and petrolatum moved relatively lower. The new formula also seems more solvent/glycol-heavy and less structurally waxy. My guess is that this makes it easier to scoop and apply, but less rigid and less able to keep thick hair locked together.

I have very thick, pitch-black hair, and I can’t really use the new version anymore because my hair starts falling apart too quickly.

I’m looking for something with very strong/extreme hold, a dry matte or at least low-shine finish, and no visible white residue. Ido not want added volume. My hair is already extremely thick and voluminous, so products that puff it up or add too much texture are not ideal.

Products I’ve already tried:

Reuzel Strong Hold Matte Clay: too weak for my hair and gets crumbly quickly, leaving white residue.

Kevin Murphy Night Rider: no visible white flakes in my black hair, but the hold dies after 2–4 hours. It also feels too heavy and looks too shiny on me.

Kevin Murphy Rough Rider: closer to the matte texture I want, but it leaves white crumbs immediately during/after application. Hold still needs to be stronger.

Interestingly, the Kevin Murphy‘s make my hair more wavy which I also don’t really love. Both Reuzel‘s seem to keep it much more straight.

Any recommendations for thick black hair where I need strong control, low/no shine, no added volume, and no white flaking?

Best pomade clay for hold all day?

My hair is about 5 to 6inches long at the top and I want my hair to hold all day.

None of the clays ive used worked. Water clays seems not to work with my hair. Haanz doesnt work nor does matte by grim grease. Both I believe are water based, and both are advertised as "high hold" which is utter BS because they fall flat with a little bit of sweat at the gym.

Is there any other product to try? Dont want movement on my hair rather than lock & hold without the frizzyness effect

Moist wavy look with medium hold

I have slightly curly, wavy hair, not too long. I use balm with weak hold, but I don’t like the look and want to change it. I am looking for a wet look like you just got out of the shower, but at least medium hold, because I have dry hair and scalp, so it can get out of wack sometimes. Attaching photo below to give you an idea of desires look. Please recommend me a product, thanks.

(Mine is slightly curlier than in the image, but would like that sort of look, not exactly, but couldn’t find better photo)

Should Shear Revival American Gardens come with a scoop already taken out of it?

Thanks to everyone who suggested American gardens. It’s my first day trying this product and it has worked perfectly. I am concerned though as when I opened the jar it seems like a good size scoop has already been taken out of it. Is this normal with shear revival?

Need help with product weighing down my hair

This is how I want my hair to look. I have very straight hair and first of all, is this even attainable? Right now I use sea salt paste with a diffuser and after that I use lodestar rio. It looks pretty good for like 2 hours but after that it starts falling flat. Anything I should do differently or products I should look into? Thanks

Do pomades expire if they're unopened?

Hello, I just saw a crazy deal for Duke Cannon pomade on amazon (Save 80% on one when you buy two) and typically pomade lasts me awhile before I run out. If I leave a jar unopened, will it last for a few years? Thanks!

Suggestions for the summer? I had been using duke hurricane hold, but the second I step outside it’s gone

I’m new to this whole thing. Got a haircut like 3 months back and started doing my hair. Now it’s summer weather and duke is a complete disaster. I step outside and it’s like the pomade disintegrates.

Any recommendations?

Best shampoo and conditioner for men with more bad hair days. Does anybody know why this is happening to me???

I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while and most advice about the best shampoo and conditioner for men feels too generic or ignores how much hair can change from day to day.

For context I have wavy hair not tight curls but not straight either. It can look good one day and completely different the next if something in the routine is off.
After trying a few combinations and paying attention to what yall have to say i do agree with SOME things.
Shampoo is where most of the damage seems to happen. A lot of shampoos feel great at first. Hair feels clean and light but after a few days it gets dry, frizzy, and harder to manage.

IF A GENTLER shampoo used less often seems to work better than a stronger one used regularly, WHYY ARE MY HAIR GREASY ON DAY 3???

Conditioner also matters MOREE RIGHT??
I feel like for wavy hair esp it does most of the heavy lifting. And there's real difference between a conditioner that actually softens and one that just coats the hair shows up after a few days not right away. When it truly works ive noticed my hair being easier to detangle and not puffing up as much after drying.

Washing every day HELPS IN SHORT TERM but its made things soooo much worse now.
It made my hair less predictable bcs TELL ME WHYY some days it looks fine, other days it just felt off.  Why do i have more bad hair days than anything else

Spacing washes out helped it settle into a more consistent pattern instead of constantly resetting.BUT ITS STILL NOT THERE YET.

I also noticed that products marketed for men don’t seem very different. A lot of the so-called best shampoo and conditioner for men are just simpler formulas with stronger scents. Like bro my hair doesn’t care about that as much as it cares about how the formula works with your hair type!!!!

Whyy dont these companies understand that more than anything, wavy hair NEEDS BALANCE. Too much moisture makes it heavy and flat. Too little makes it frizzy and undefined.

So NOW IM HOPING ITS LESS ABT FINDING ONE PRODUCT AND MORE ABT FINDING THE RIGHT BALANCE SO PLS HELPP MEE

Here are things im wondering abt. PLEASE TELL ME WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN'T:
- milder shampoo and letting the conditioner sit longer.
ORR not washing every day, and paying attention to how my hair behaves after a few days instead of just right after washing??
At this point,  I WILL TRY ANY ROUTINE  somebody with good hair days suggests. WHAT ARE REALLLY GOOD SHAMPOOS AND CONDITIONERS THAT WILL GUARANTEE MORE GOOD HAIR DAYSS

Why does Nivea creme work and look better than 99% of hair products?

Hey everyone,

I’m reaching out because I’m stuck in a weird styling loop. I have very thick, stubborn hair that refuses to be tamed. I’ve tried countless highend pomades, clays, and waxes, but 99% of them do absolutely nothing for me. My hair either eats the product and springs back to its frizzy, wavy self, or looks dull and limp/boring after an hour.

The only thing that actually gives me the look I want is, weirdly enough, Nivea Creme (the blue tin) and to a lesser degree CeraVe Moisturizing Cream.

When I apply Nivea to damp hair, for the first 5 minutes while it’s still in that white residue phase, my hair looks incredible. It’s heavy, nourished, perfectly formable, and has a glassy, high health radiance. All frizz and unwanted bends are gone. But as soon as it dries/absorbs, the laminate vanishes, and my hair structure springs back up and gets frizzy again.

What im looking for

I need actual hair product (available in EU) that mimics those first 5 minutes of Nivea Creme but makes it permanent and stable throughout the day.

I’ve realized I need a high-weight, water-soluble laminator that acts as a permanent topcoat. It needs to:

  1. Mimic the physical barrier: Seal the cuticle flat and fill in the gaps like a heavy cream.
  2. Provide Weight: Not just "hold," but actual heaviness to kill the natural spring/bend of my thick hair.
  3. Healthy Finish: Give that glassy, deep-conditioned glow, not the greasy/oily look of a classic petroleum grease (I've tried Murray’s, hated the finish).
  4. Scalp Healthy: I want to keep my scalp healthy, so I prefer something that doesn't clog everything up (however I will definitely wash out every night)

Current failed attempts:

  • Cantu/Shea Leave-ins: Hair feels soft but looks dull and loses shape instantly.
  • Standard Water-based Pomades: Usually too thin; they evaporate and my hair frizzes up.

I’ve been looking into things like Color Wow One-Minute Transformation, O'Douds Heavy Hold, or Layrite Supershine, but I have wasted so much money on useless products so I want to hear from the experts here.

Does anyone with thick, impossible hair have a recommendation for a product that provides that heavy, creamy, laminating effect without the dirty feel of a traditional grease?

Thanks in advance

What kind of deodorant/body wash/shaving products do yall use?

Im always on the search for new and better products, and Im super interested to see what this community has to say.

I love when pomade brands make general grooming stuff too, like shear revivals shaving stuff or Odouds shampoos. Havent seen to many brands do body washes and deodorants, though.

So what do you dudes use?

What product will produce this type of finish?

Hey all. I’m currently growing my hair out and my goal is to style it like this, and I’m curious what type of product would give you this type of finish. I’m so used to spiky type firm paste, so for this how would I go about styling it once I leave the salon and the stylist does it for me?

American Crew Fiber replacement without parabenes or anything dodgy?

I bought this one like back in 2020 or perhaps earlier, it lasted ages. There is still some, but I probably should change it, even tho it still somehow looks and smells good, but just in case.

I have read they have changed the formula. As usual, probably they use cheaper ingredients now or who knows.

So I was wondering, is there any natural alternatives that give you a texture that is not detectable (no wet effect or anything) and makes your hair stand against wind and so on?

This Kevin Murphy stuff I've heard gets so spammed here that it looks like a dodgy marketing campaign so I want some alternatives.

I asked AI and said this:

  1. NO GUNK Clay Paste Matte Hair Wax (100% Natural) — Best overall match
    • Moroccan lava clay, argan oil, cactus seed oil, and other natural/organic ingredients.
    • Strong hold, excellent matte finish, textured natural look, no residue.
    • Highly praised for clean, non-toxic formula and nourishing feel.
    • Search for: "NO GUNK Arcilla Pasta Cera de Peinado Mate" on Amazon.es.
    • Available in different sizes/scents (e.g., original or with essential oils). amazon.es
  2. Highland Ice Clay — 100% natural ingredients
    • Award-winning, fully natural formula.
    • Matte finish, good hold for short styles, scalp-friendly.
    • Search for: "Highland Ice Clay" on Amazon.es. amazon.es
  3. Sapiens Strong and Matte Hair Wax (95%+ Natural)
    • Based on natural clay & sugar, invisible shaping, strong hold with matte effect.
    • Good for everyday natural looks on short hair.
    • Search for: "Sapiens Cera Pelo Hombre Fijación Fuerte y Mate". amazon.es

Other Solid Options on Amazon.es

  • Zew For Men Matte Clay (Natural Strong Hold with Activated Carbon) — Uses kaolin clay and natural oils (though it contains some conventional ingredients like petrolatum in certain versions — check the label). amazon.es
  • L'Homme Grooming Defining Hair Clay — Emphasizes natural nourishing ingredients and flexible matte styling. amazon.es

Can’t Find the Right Product for This Style

For some context, I have the correct hair type and cut for this look, but struggle to find a product that can give me this kind of style for longer than an hour or two.

I have straight, dense but fine hair.

I have tried:
Lodestar Rio
Kevin Murphy Free Hold
America Crew Clay
FlowBros pomade
Blind Barber Hair Clay
Old Spice Classic Pomade
Based Pomade
Reuzel Severed Head
Dry Lift

I have tried these products alongside sea salt spray and a variety of blow drying techniques.

So far lodestar Rio has gotten me the closest to this, but at best it only makes my hair stay like this for maximum of one hour before my hair falls out and just flops to the side or in front of my face.

My main issue with Rio is that it makes my hair feel dry and sticky, and weights it down way too much. And if I use more product to increase the hold, the hair looks super greasy and weighed down.

Does anyone have any advice for some other products I should try to get this look? I feel like I’m so close to achieving this style consistently but just need to find the correct product.

Thanks!
