Potential Sequel idea?

I had an interesting thought just now. If both Erid and Earth noticed that Tau Ceti wasn’t dimming, and both Erid and Earth were populated by life seeded from Adrian, with complex societies… how many more were there that saw Tau Ceti, or better yet saw that Sol and 40Eridani were brightening back to normal levels.

So could there be potentially dozens of other alien civilizations in the local group, all descended from Adrian life, all coming to Sol and 40Eridani to ask for the solution? If I were an alien civilization, I’d go to the stars that were brightening again because that would imply life around their systems already figured the problem out.

What if in the sequel Grace decides to finally go back home in his old age, and Rocky and some other Eridians joined him, after expanding the ship with some Eridian biosphere attachments and larger fuel tanks, and on the way out of the 40 Eridani system they bump into more aliens from other systems and get sidetracked into helping them?

We could have a side plot of some Eridians who went to Earth to set up communications and an embassy or something long before Grace decided to set out, so they are already arriving when the story starts, and they have to deal with helping earth out of all the problems it’s gone through in the nearly 30 years of decreasing stability, as well as new aliens arriving at Earth to ask for help on top of everything else.

I doubt this is how a sequel would go but I thought it made for an interesting idea that seems plausible by the facts established in universe.

I put this as book discussion because I doubt a second movie will be made until a second book is released and Andy Weir has toyed with the idea, and I think this plot though unlikely works in the book setting as well, even if Grace would be like 70 by the time it was over.

Merch search - key rings or pins etc where Grace has a cane?

Not sure if this is the place to be asking this but I figured it was worth a shot 🤞.

So I read the book way back and was so disappointed when the movie version of Grace didn’t use a cane because I use one and I’ve NEVER seen any other representation (non elderly) before or after. Aside from that one kid in roots of pacha I guess but that’s niche lol. Still absolutely love the film. Also super excited by how much popularity and fan merch its brought ! But now the popular interpretation of Grace doesn’t include his cane which is a bit disheartening 💀…

I’ve searched around quite a bit and not had any luck yet but I was wondering if anyone else has happened to find anything where he has one? Ideally a pin/badge or keychain that could put on my bag but I’d be pretty happy with anything.

*Ideally* not from America because the shipping is absurd to my area but I might just have to be willing to pay that in the end if that’s my only option :P…

Why was Grace able to reach Rocky’s planet but not Earth?

So, Rocky gave Grace 2 million Kg of fuel to help him get back to earth but that also meant Rocky’s trip would take an additional 6 years for himself. So when Grace decides to save Rocky instead of going home, how come they were able to still reach Rocky’s planet on the Hail Mary when Grace only had enough fuel to make a 4 year journey (to earth), never mind a 6 year one to Rocky planet.
Apologies if I’m sounding dumb, it just didn’t make sense to me, unless I’m missing something obvious.

Thank you

Project Hail Mary x The Scientist

I was listening to music and I realized the song called The Scientist by Coldplay was similar to Grace’s story. I went onto YouTube to see if there was a video but there wasn’t any. Could someone make a video called Project Hail Mary x The Scientist and it is like a montage, that would be awesome

Plot Questions

I just watched the movie and was wondering if there are some answers to these plot questions.

When they discovered the Petrova line and then discovered that it was a flow of astrophages from the Sun to Venus. And then Grace discovers that the astrophages are traveling to the CO2-rich atmosphere of Venus (bypassing Mercury) to breed and then return.

I would have liked some scenes discussing some alternatives to the plan that they eventually settled on. The Petrova line starts off thin and then arcs towards Venus where it spreads out. Once Grace killed one astrophage and then figured out its composition. Why was it not simpler to figure out an infrared-invisible filter to kill astrophages before they reached Venus or before they returned to the sun? They could have dismissed it by saying they couldn't filter them fast enough or the filter would get saturated too quickly or anything. But the movie didn't attempt to convince us that discovering a new organism, figuring out how it breeds, it being able to breed quick enough to fuel a starship with new engines invented and manufactured to take advantage of its high energy-density, and then make a 12 year trip to a distant star was a more feasible plan.

Why was it planned as a suicide mission due to the engines not having enough macrophages to return to Earth? Was it not possible to plot a course that included refilling astrophages as fuel when they showed the galaxy was littered with Petrova lines? They knew that the destination star had its own Petrova Line? Why wasn't it incorporated into the plan to refuel from those astrophages before returning home?

Did they need to collect a large sample of the amoebas that kill the astrophages and send them back? It was never going to be enough to replicate the population of amoebas required on Venus, so why wouldn't they just sequence the organism and transmit that data back to scientists on Earth instead? Or just use the amoebas to understand how to metabolize the astrophages and then send that mechanism back to Earth. They already had to evolve a strain that could survive the Nitrogen content of Venus' atmosphere, but what about it's gravity or radiation? The solution is going to end up highly-customized anyway. When the amoebas arrive on Earth, it's said that they will start growing more of them anyway. Wouldn't the data be enough (kind of like in another show where the instructions for a virus are sent to earth and then scientists on the ground create them). This felt like a contrivance to make that dangerous amoeba-collection mission happen.

Hail mary - Review and Spoiler alert

For starters both the creators/producers/directors and Gosling deserves Oscars for what they have managed to achieve.

The way the flash backs were staggered and the build up to the ending was perfect.

Both the directing and Gosling managed to make me feel so much emotion throughout the film....mainly towards rocky.

The way there friendship blossomed was brilliant. When Rocky saved Grace I was hoping that he survived and was happy and smiled when he did.

When Gosling realised he then needed to go and save rocky from their own discovery was like a full circle moment as well.....also glad he did.

I also think the ending was both excellently thought out and executed, seeing them both having a happy ending, walking on the beach and Grace being a teacher again was heart warming and brought another smile to my face.

I don't know if it was intended to have this kind of message, but how much it got me to care about something so different from a human was eye opening and inspiring.

I know there are plenty of films out there that try to normalize us about differences and love people/things for who or what they are, but I think hail Mary did it in a genius way and so much more impactful.

Also who doesn't want a friend like Rocky.

Nothing half as lonely as "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" (1970) by outlaw country singer Kris Kristofferson.

Needle Drop: https://vimeo.com/1204651413

Kris Kristofferson's path to a successful music career is a story of quiet persistence, never giving up, and always looking for unique and unexpected opportunities to collaborate with other musicians. He wrote lots of songs that were more famous for their covers by other musicians.

The song "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" describes a man feeling restless and disconnected until familiar sights and sounds remind him of something he'd almost forgotten. In a way, this also describes the journey of our protagonist, Ryland Grace, adrift and lost and slowly remembering who he is, why he's 12 light years from earth, and who he has to be brave for.

Kristofferson's feeling of restlessness and longing for something familiar was the byproduct of his upbringing. Born in Texas in 1936, Kristofferson's father was an active military member, which meant their family moved a LOT during his childhood. Anyone who is an "army brat" will understand the feeling of never being able to call any place home.

Some time after World War II ended, the family settled down in San Mateo, California. Kristofferson wasted no time out of high school, enrolling in Pomona College in 1954 and graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Literature. He earned a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford in 1958, and continued writing and recording songs in England. After graduating with a Masters in Literature in 1960, he served in the US Army from 1961-1965, and formed a service band with fellow soldiers during his time in West Germany. After being discharged, he taught literature at West Point Academy and worked other odd jobs.

One such job he started in 1967 probably changed his life: janitorial services at Columbia Records, where he could talk to artists and producers at all hours of the day. He even met fellow outlaw countryman Johnny Cash through this network. He and June were extremely impressed by Kristofferson's body of work.

His first release, Kristofferson (1970), included a lot of songs that had already been performed by other artists. His 1969 song, "Me and Bobby McGee," was performed first not by Janis Joplin, surprisingly, but by country artists like Roger Miller, Kenny Rogers, Gordon Lightfoot, and the Statler Brothers. Lauded by critics, Kristofferson was a commercial failure with an audience that didn't know who he was. Then Janis Joplin included the song on her 1971 album, Pearl. Kristofferson hadn't even heard her cover until the day after she died. Owing to the success of that record, the label re-released his debut album with a new title: Me and Bobby McGee (1971). It peaked at #10 on the Billboard Country charts, and was certified Gold (500,000+ copies sold).

Kristofferson released a slew of albums in the 1970s and 1980s, and worked with such artists as Rita Coolidge (whom he married and later divorced), Dolly Parton, Brenda Lee, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and Waylon Jennings. In 1985, Kristofferson, Cash, Jennings, and Nelson formed the outlaw country supergroup, The Highwaymen, which released multiple albums and went on tours until 1996. He appeared in a few movies, but his most notable role was opposite Barbra Streisand in 1976's A Star is Born, which was remade in 2018 (starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper).

He continued touring and performing throughout the 2000s and 2010s, only slowing down for the COVID-19 pandemic. His final public performance was at the Hollywood Bowl in 2023, and he passed away in 2024 at his home in Hawaii, at the ripe old age of 88.

His tombstone is engraved with lines from a Leonard Cohen classic:

> Like a bird on the wire
> Like a drunk in a midnight choir
> I have tried in my way to be free

Rest in peace, cowboy.
