PlayStation 2 toys blue. Ratchet and Clank

Another item from the collection, guys! It doesn't get more CIB than this! 100% complete. Immaculate. It's a rarity to find one complete like this! From Brazil!

What could go wrong, Bubsy? Someone at High Impact Games not getting the memo that they're supposed to increase challenge prizes in NG+, that's what.

I even beat one of the hoverboard challenges in New Game + yet its bolt reward still didn't increase. But hey, at least the screen goes dim after waiting long enough in the pause menu, right?

Was doing glitch techniques in Rift Apart and saw a random teleporter in the distance. Was hope'n that I found a teleporter to Insomniac Museum. Turns out it's not a random teleporter and for some reason a lot of assets just didnt load in.

A few days ago I finally played Rift Apart, and decided to make a tier list of all the games I played. My thoughts as a fan since 2009 and speedrunner of the series.

I've never owned a PS5 and up until a year ago, I didn't even have a gaming PC. I got one around this time last year and set it up back in January and started playing the 8th/9th gen games I missed out on. With Sony deciding to end disc production, Rift Apart might be the final new game in the series that I play, which makes this a good time to do what I consider a "definitive" ranking (based on my opinions). I'm not 100% certain on some game placements (mainly in B tier) but overall I'm happy putting this out on social media. If you have any questions on some game placements, feel free to ask.

This is a repost since I wanted to add a spoiler tag to keep the ranking a surprise, as well as adding additional info to the post.

Ranger Rumble is surprisingly a lot of fun

Long time Ratchet fan here, as far back as the original game on PS2 (and demo discs even before that). When Ranger Rumble got announced, I had a pretty frustrated groan that the first title we were getting since 2021 was a mobile game, but I was willing to give it a shot. Lo and behold, it dropped today in the UK, and I downloaded it and gave it a shot, and it’s actually pretty fun to play. It’s not a serious competitive shooter or anything, but there’s a lot of cool unique designs, the gameplay loop is pretty solid, and the matches are bite-sized enough to make losses not feel too serious.

I’m not quite sure how I feel about monetization yet. Costumes seem really grindy, and locking certain weapons behind characters in drops is rather iffy, but even with just Chip so far, I’m having a lot of fun mixing his Tesla Claw and Agents of Doom to be a close-quarters menace. Could be the honeymoon period speaking, but I’m really enjoying it so far. Ratchet is apparently being added as a limited time character too, so I’m interested to see how he’ll play.

I love the Ratchet & Clank games :)

I started playing the Ratchet & Clank games at a very young age, so unfortunately i can't remember which one i played first, but i do remember that i have ALWAYS loved the games. I started with the PS2 and the 3 originals, i first played on pre-beat saves and at some point i started my own saves. One of my favorite memories of the things i did, was going to the starship phoenix, going to Skidd's empty seat and pretending to fuel my ship so i could keep going on my "adventures" :D.

Im also quite young for a Ratchet & Clank fan, considering i dont think i have ever met any fans my age, so i had a somewhat different childhood than most people my age, which is why i dont really understand people my age, but looking at what people my age are doing, i dont think i want to even understand them.

There was also a time where i kind of forgot about Ratchet & Clank and started playing minecraft for like a couple months or a year, but when i finally remember about Ratchet & Clank, it was like i never stopped playing.

Im just so thankful i have known about these games since a very young age and got have an amazing childgood with them, and ive loved them my whole life. Im not doing very well mentally right now, but i just wanted to make this post as an appreciation to the series, because the games just mean so much to me :)

weapon cracking

I wanted to know something about Ratchet & Clank 2. I'm in challenge mode and I was wondering if there's a mod or a hack that lets you get all the challenge mode weapons (weapon icons in yellow) and then upgrade them to their maximum level (weapon icons in blue), because in this game the weapons are way too expensive. You can really feel the capitalism in your face.

Was testing pc[steam] vs ps5 dualsense performance, and omg

Not only is the dualsense much weaker even cabled, without steam input and all, but holy cow is the performance atrocious!

You cannot tell me I can run frontiers of pandora at ultra with no lag and this booted at 6fps? Heavy drops to 30 without raytracing or dlss? How atrociously optimized is this?

Like I have a 4060, not the best but definitely not the worst, it handled several open world games, why wouldn't this?

Replaying Up Your Arsenal. Observations as a fan since ye old 2002. I am old oh no.

Finished Ratchet and Clank Up Your Arsenal and omg, best PS2 Ratchet and Clank. Insomniac really upped it every time. Up Your Arsenal refined the gun play to be more slick than Going Commando, and it had a great story that balanced galaxy wide stakes with the satirical, silly comedy of the first two games. Weapons were not as varied as Going Commando, but like the first game, I found more opportunities to experiment with gameplay choices. The one area it’s weaker is a more linear level design.

+ A big part of what makes Up Your Arsenal great is it manages to tie all three games together by ironing out Ratchet’s personality (after he was virtually two different people in previous games). Giving Qwark a satisfying redemption, without forgetting he still kinda sucks. Revisiting planets from R&C 1. Etc.

+Nefarious is the star, I can’t think of any character in the PS2 era animated as well as him except maybe Daxter from the Jak games.

+Armin Shimerman acts his ass off, shrieking almost every line. The animation and VO made Nefarious such an iconic villain, it feels like he always was there. Also as a Trekkie, I enjoy the guy who played Quark screaming “Qwark” every other line.

+ One issue I have with UYA is the inconsistent environment art. Florana looks great, but comparing UYA Metropolis with its appearance in R&C 1, it just doesn’t hit the same level of wonder. (Check attached screenshots). This is likely due to the weapons and amount of enemies and effects on screen using up all of PS2’s hardware power. The amount of chaos on screen in Up Your Arsenal is 10x R&C 1, which would experience frame drops when 3 enemies simultaneously explode. Simplifying Metropolis is understandable, but was a bummer.

+ gameplay variety: Clank sections were not great. The Qwark vidcomics were a delight. Tyranoid talking sim was entertaining. Battlefields were a chore.

+ The MUSIC is SO good.

+ Regardless of the shortcomings, I had a BLAST.

+last time I played this was in 2012. Back then I felt the first game was the best if memory serves. I think back then I enjoyed Ratchet’s abrasiveness and the higher reliance on platforming more. I like him more in UYA now, probably because I just find him to be a great straight man to all the ridiculous characters around him, plus having some optimism in a hero feels so warm and cozy these days.

What’s a level in 2 besides Robotica Farms and Metropolis that could easily fit into a R&C planet?

Breeze Harbor and Hurricos for me

Breeze Harbor feels like a mix between Blackwater City and Gemlik Base

Hurricos even has enemies that resemble Ratchet and Clank

Honorable mention: Aquaria Towers, the way you need to raise the level of the water feels like the Blackwater City mission

Missed Opportunity in Going Commando

With the reveal that the Protopets are actually hostile as hell, it would have been a lot cooler if all of the Protopets appear in all of the others planets, including those prior to its rescue.

Also, they should have the Protopets battle the other native creatures and enemies.

Short film I did back in the day for film school. I now work at Pixar as the head animator for various film projects.

Which Wrench Is The Coolest?

I Compiled All the Wrenchs from the series Including the 4 cut Wrenchs from Ratchet Gladiator and the one used by the combat bots I really like the look of the PS2 era designs and wish for them to return at least as a wrench skin in the next game

Also at the end I put a high definition renders I found not by me of the PS2 wrenchs

Could this possibly be Klunk? Maybe he exists in Emperor Nefarious' dimension. (Discovered by DOMEN99, who shared it on Insomniac's discord)
