Thoughts on the referendum result to leave the NUS?

Just saw the official announcement from the SU that the referendum passed the voting threshold and UCL has officially voted to leave NUS UK. Interested how people think this will actually affect students day-to-day, or whether most people voted because they felt the NUS wasn’t offering much value anyway. Do you think focusing more on internal UCL issues is the right move, or are we going to lose an important national student voice?

final module mark timeline/penalty application question

hi! i'm a poly sci affiliate student and was unsure about if/when penalties are applied towards final grades in the political science department. i've gotten my essay marks back on moodle (my whole module mark is based on two coursework essays) and in the feedback, i'm told i'll get a 5-point deduction for an overlength essay (i forgot that footnotes counted), but my mark on moodle still shows the mark without a penalty applied.

when i submitted a previous essay less than 10 minutes late in the same module, a penalty didn't appear in the months after and still doesn't show up. is the final module mark I see on moodle (>70) going to be far from what I actually get? when are penalties applied?

URGENT advice anyone?!?

I noticed that this thread is for education blah blah blah, accommodation blah blah. Can we talk about something serious like helping me find a GF at UCL? I’m so sick and tired of turning my head in a lecture theatre and seeing a guy. I got more experience talking to some AI chatbot than to a girl.

The other day I saw a girl at my old uni and I fumbled so bad that she just smiled and walked away. It was so embarrassing. I had to change from Mech Eng and now do BME, simply cuz of the girl to guy ratio being well over one and no other reason.

Should I reach out to societies? Should I make a society where you can help me? Guys (and gals) please just help me out on this.

PS I’m applying here for a MSc but need some extracurricular activities on the side. If I get a confirmed place will you help a lad out?

Are internships and career prep something you need to start thinking about from year one, or is that overkill?

I’ve just started uni and I keep hearing mixed advice about internships and career prep. Some people say you should be thinking about it right from year one, while others say it’s way too early and you should just focus on settling in first. Curious what the actual reality is and when people really started taking it seriously.

Visiting research student

So I will most likely be present at UCL as a visiting research student for the summer (from late August till October). I would reaaally appreciate if anyone can give any type of advice regarding things like housing, social activities at the university during the summer, clubs etc. Basically anything is of value to me right now. Also, if someone is also planning on staying there during the summer and is open to socializing and meeting people, hit me up.
P.S. I'm not from the UK.

Severe dysmenorrhea right before exam

Hi everyone,

I’m currently a first-year undergraduate student in UCL and I have a final exam tomorrow afternoon.

I’m experiencing a sudden and severe episode of dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps). This is significantly worse than my usual symptoms.

Right now:

•	I am basically bedbound and unable to sit upright for long periods

•	I cannot concentrate or function properly

•	I have taken paracetamol and ibuprofen (OTC standard doses, as directed) but there has been no improvement

•	I have a prior history of dysmenorrhea, but this episode is much more severe than usual

Because of this, I do not think I am medically fit to sit the exam.

I have already started the process of submitting Extenuating Circumstances (EC) via my university system, but I am unsure about the evidence part.

My questions are:

  1. Is severe dysmenorrhea generally accepted as valid grounds for EC in UK universities?

  2. What kind of evidence is typically required for cases like this (e.g. GP note, NHS111 record, pharmacy receipts, self-certification)? If I do not yet have access to a GP appointment, is it still acceptable to submit the EC first and provide evidence later?

  3. Given that I am currently in severe pain and essentially unable to leave bed, attending the exam does not seem physically possible. In this situation, is it still advisable to attempt the exam before EC is processed, or is it acceptable to rely on the EC outcome?

I have also registered with a GP, but the process will take a couple of days, so I will not have immediate medical documentation before the exam.

Any advice from people familiar with UK university EC systems would be really appreciated.

Thank you.

Is it realistic to work full time and study part time postgrad degree?

Hi everyone,

I’m based in London and currently working full-time in a management role in a small company. I work 5 days a week, with 2 days wfh. For this reason I cant take study leave, but I also have pretty relaxed wfh days where I get on with my own work as well as the job. My boss is pretty flexible too, but wouldnt want me to reduce my role to part time.

Still, i'm considering applying for a part-time Master’s at UCL (MA intercultural communication), but I’ve been told teaching is in-person and attendance is required for lectures and seminars. Id be doing max 2 modules at a time.

I wanted to ask people who have done something similar:

Is it realistically manageable to work full-time and do a part-time MA with in-person attendance?

How many days a week are you usually on campus?

Does it tend to be concentrated into 1–2 days, or spread across the week?

How did you balance deadlines, reading, and full-time work?

I’m trying to understand whether this is genuinely doable or if it’s only realistic for people working part-time or very flexible jobs.

Im hoping if it is manageable, Id be able to attend the in person things while working my job assuming I dont have to go into campus every day of the week.

Any honest experiences would be really appreciated.

Is living near UCL worth the extra rent cost?

I’m trying to work out whether paying more to stay close to campus actually improves day to day life enough to justify it, or if commuting from further out is more realistic financially.

About to submit an EC and got told it probably wouldn't be accepted, is this true??

Okay so a close family member of mine made an attempt on his life about 10 months ago.

Since then I have had a pretty hard time. I essentially fell into a deep spiral and couldn't get out of bed for days at a time unless I was using substances. Because of that I did not hand in a lot of coursework over term 1 and 2. I would simply like the chance to hand them in during the LSA period with no mark cap because I haven't even attempted it yet it would SUCK to be capped at 40.

My personal tutor essentially told me she didn't think my EC would be approved due to a lack of evidence. But she also said she couldn't say for sure so I really want to know.

In terms of evidence I'm not sure I have enough:

\- I contacted student services during term 1 about the substance abuse and the depression. I unfortunately did not follow up in terms 2 because the depression got THAT bad.

\- My attendance around this time is pretty damn low. Below 40% in every module I'm pretty sure

\- I attend a support group once a month (not NHS, but from a recognised organisation) and the lead therapist can write an email detailing everything I am struggling with and how it's affected me.

Is this enough??? Or are they still likely to cap me at 40 for everything anyway?? Is it even worth applying for the EC??

Calculator miscomduct

I had an exam today, I had brought my a level calculator by accident (fx-991ex) and I had told the invigilators about this to ask if they had a spare calculator and they told me they don’t and to just write that model name on the exam envelope and do the exam.

I checked online and using calculators that aren’t permitted (fx-83GT,85GT) is considered academic misconduct. I emailed my department about this situation but I cant help but worry that my whole exam can be disqualified, what are the chances of this actually occurring?

Exam

Hi all,

I just sat my exam at the ExCel centre today, it was a computer exam. But halfway through I lost internet connection and my work wasn't saving. Overall, I lost about 10mins in trying to sort this out, and was worried I'd lose my work. While in the end everything worked out ok, I lost quite some exam time. They did give me an extra 6mins at the end but between all the shuffling around and all the noise, it really didn't make up for the interruption. Do I raise this with UCL? How would I go about reporting it? Is it likely they would do anything about it?
