CNA/MA positions at UNC hospital?

If everything goes to plan this summer, I will end up with a Nurse Assistant I certification after completing an accelerated program sometime into Fall 2026 semester.

Questions:

- Does anyone know how available Nurse Assistant positions are during the school year, preferably part time? (I have checked the UNC medical jobs website)

- How difficult is it to work as a student?

- Would there be any reason to choose MA over CNA or vice-versa? (in terms of which position is more in demand)

Any and all advice is appreciated!

Typical for instructor to refuse SIAR and what options?

My kid made a mistake and turned in a creative project to two classes. He wasn't thinking and created one work that had specific parameters and then turned the same thing in to a similar class that just wanted "something you love." He did love what he created and simply wasn't thinking. I'm fuzzy on whether he told Instructor 1 - the one he actually created the work for - that he turned it in for both classes or somehow Instructor 1 found out, but he did admit it and begged for mercy. None was forthcoming. Fair enough, but Instructor 1 also said many demeaning things to my kid and ostracized him for the remaining weeks left.

Upon receiving notice from the administration, he realized he qualified for and so submitted the form for SIAR, the Student Instructor Alternative Resolution, by admitting his guilt.

But, at his initial meeting to resolve the case, he was told SIAR isn't an alternative because Instructor 1 wouldn't agree to it. This seems to kick in many other issues, including receiving a written warning and one semester probation and, importantly, lowering by one letter grade not just in Instructor 1's class but also the other class. Instructor 2 in the other class didn't seem to have a problem with it when my son told him. Instructor 2 has submitted the grade, Instructor 1 has not.

Is it typical that instructors won't agree to SIAR or is this instructor an outlier? I'm trying to figure out how to help my son. He is P/F in the class with Instructor 1 who said demeaning things, so does this mean Instructor 1 can fail him? My son certainly feels that is the instructor's intent even though a letter grade lower should mean a passing grade. Are there any campus resources that could provide support or is it up to the parent to find an advocate and if so, who? TIA.

Commencement thoughts?

I'm a 2015 Alum - Heels til I die.. I cant even remember who the speaker was at my graduation, some tech CEO or something without much of importance to say. I also have been seeing all the clips online of cringe AI bootlicking speeches getting, thankfully, booed by graduates across the country. I know the bar is really low. My dad sent me the Eric Church speech today and was gushing about it, "best commencement speech ever," etc. I dont know much about Eric Church as i'm not a country music fan - i do know that he's seemingly more apolitical/liberal than most country artists, and a well liked person in the music industry. I dont think it was the greatest speech ever, but it was memorable and felt like it came from a sincere place, that essentially any Tar Heels could rally around.

What did you students/2026 graduates think? Did it resonate with you at all? Was there controversy around campus considering the crappy optics of a white dude country singer doing this speech at this time? Considering how many people are talking about it, i'm surprised to not see a thread on here about it. Go to Hell Dook

Parking for an off campus grad student?

The title basically says it all. I’m starting my first grad semester in fall. Do I have hope? Is it hopeless? Any advice? Thanks!

does anybody else feel like some of the students here dont deserve to be here?

after reading all the comments, i’ve come to the conclusion that i was probably looking at things too narrowly. i still think there are people everywhere who take shortcuts or exaggerate things, but a lot of you reminded me that i truly don’t know everyone’s story or what they had to overcome to get here.

some people may not have traditional ec's because they were working jobs, taking care of family, dealing with personal struggles, or just living a completely different life than mine. that doesn’t make them less deserving.

at the end of the day, i got into unc too, and i should focus more on being grateful, working hard, and making the most of my own opportunities instead of comparing myself to others. appreciate everyone who shared their perspectives honestly.

this was the original post, thank you for sharing your opinions:

idk… i’m an incoming freshman, and i’ve seen people who i genuinely feel should not have gotten into unc get accepted. not because they’re bad people or anything, but because they seemed to do nothing outside of school besides get good grades. i asked one of them what their ec's were, and they literally said, “oh… well about that,” because they basically had none.

it honestly makes me wonder if some people lied on their common app. did they lie their way in???? im sick of people lying on common app and getting spots so many others deserved. and yeah, i know that sounds harsh, but it kind of bothers me because i, and MANY other students, worked extremely hard to get into UNC (and other schools). we spent years building activities, helping our communities, balancing leadership, jobs, volunteering, etc.

meanwhile, it feels like some people only had to focus on grades and then exaggerate the rest.

i know admissions aren’t perfect, and i’m not saying everyone with fewer activities is undeserving. i also know there’s probably stuff i don’t see behind the scenes. but it still kind of irks me sometimes, especially knowing i’ll see these people on campus in the fall.

i’m curious if anyone else has felt this way, or if you see it differently. genuinely interested in hearing other perspectives.

How to retrieve old documents

Hello, UNC alum class of 2024 here! I am wondering where I can retrieve old documents from Microsoft word that I linked to my student email. I had them downloaded on an old laptop but silly me didn’t back them up. I’m applying to grad school and some applications require writing samples and I had a bunch stored in onedrive. I also submitted them to Sakai. If anyone knows how to get those back it would be greatly appreciated 🥹

amazon mini fridge fake?

i am going to dorm in the upcoming months and need to buy a mini fridge under $90-$95. i looked for them in walmart and target but they are either super expensive or have an outrageous delivery fee.

i ended up on amazon where the cheaper mini fridges without a delivery fee dont have customer reviews, since they are “new on amazon,” or real name brands, since they are coming from china. what should i do and where can i buy a mini fridge from? i can return it if i purchase the amazon one so should i just hope for the best?

thank you for your help!

Short Term e-Sim plans

Hi all, wondering if you have any recommendations for reliable and yet affordable e-sim plans, I am planning to stay for 4 months in Chapel Hill for the coming fall. May also be travelling to other parts of the US for short trips but mainly will be in Chapel Hill.

Any advice is appreciated.

Waitlist Update?

Hi everyone! I was recently waitlisted for UNC Chapel Hill for the Class of 2030 as a first-year applicant.

I’m just wondering if anyone has heard about any waitlist movement yet or if UNC has started admitting students off the waitlist. I know a few people got off the waitlist around Regular Decision, but I’m curious if there’s usually more movement after that or if that’s basically it for UNC.
I know my chances of getting off the waitlist are very slim, but I’m still holding out hope!

Don't graduate UNC without some engineering skills.

Consider adding APPL101 or APPL110 to your degree. Both are Gen-ed courses, with lots of valuable skills that you will appreciate in your next career steps. Whatever your major is, you can be a UNC graduate, or you can be a UNC graduate who is knowledgeable about prototyping (APPL110) or have good programming and modeling skills (APPL101), enough to do amazing things with the help of LLMs. If you have any questions about either course, I have taught both in the fall, and we are continuously improving them with student feedback. Question

My son would be 4th gen (though we heard that doesn't matter anymore)

Has a 3.8+ unweighted, 4.3+ weighted, a 1400 SAT, and lots of rigor on his HS transcript

Does UNC require applicants pick a major and if so, how does that impact admissions?

Are some majors "better" (less competitive for admission) to apply for than others? If so, which ones?

thanks!

Missed UNC housing priority by 2 days… how bad is this?

Hi everyone,
We’re out of state, and my son submitted his UNC housing application on May 17—about 2 days after the priority deadline 😞
He doesn’t know anyone at UNC yet, so he’s fine with a random roommate. That said, he’s an assured admit to business and was really hoping to:
room with someone with similar academic interests
and get into one of the dorms he listed as preferences
Now we’re worried that applying late might significantly limit his options.
How much does missing the priority deadline actually impact:
dorm assignment?
chances of getting a compatible roommate?
Any insight or experiences would really help calm some anxious parents here. Thanks so much!

housing question!

hi everyone! i am currently on the waitlist at another university, but have begun the process of completing all of the required steps in case i end up at unc in the fall. i signed my lease for granville, but if i don’t know (from other college) by june 15th, i will have to cancel it… will it still be possible to get housing (through the unc housing portal) by then, even if my choices are slim? i will be a freshman so i know i have to live on campus, just not sure how it works with different timelines.

Incoming UNC Student missing two weeks of class, any class recs?

  1. I'm joining the NC National Guard, and I'm returning from BCT around August 31st, about 2 weeks after classes start. The absences will be excused due to military orders, but I'll still have to make up work. I'm planning on taking a light schedule for the first semester; are there any easy courses I could take while filling up my gen eds? I just don't want piles of work to make up once I'm back.
  2. Beyond that, are there any classes y'all found particularly interesting? Anything I should look out for?

thanks in advance!

Off-Campus Meal Plan

This may be a silly question but am I able to get an off campus meal plan if I’m still living on campus. I had Block 120 last semester and ended the semester with around 90 swipes left. I did still want get a meal plan because I’ll probably eat at the dining hall occasionally but all of the on campus meal plans are way too many swipes and would be a waste of money. I think the one of the off campus plans like Block 35 + 100 flex would be much better. Just wanted to see if I would be able to do that lol

84K applicants this year?

Last year chapel hill has 69K applicants this year that increased to around 85K first years and transfers included. What is this recent trend? I feel like this is being overlooked.

Chat is chapel hill going to become in the mid to low single digit acceptance rate for out of state students.
