Has anyone had any issues traveling with an expired permanent resident card and an I-797 notice of action?

My husbands permanent resident card expired in October of 2024, we applied for his renewal and received the I-797 notice of action in July of 2024 and haven’t heard a peep since. We had questions but no major issues traveling with this letter in December of 2024 but given all of the immigration altercations of late we are worried about our plans to travel to see family this Christmas on a card that is now two years expired even though the I-797 letter indicates it extends the validity of the permanent residency for 48 months. The letter is also getting quite tattered now that it’s two years old so just looking for any advice or experiences similar! Thanks all.

Hi, what advice can you give me? I’ve been in this situation for over three years with no changes.

Hi, what advice can you give me? I’ve been in this situation for over three years with no changes. I have an I-220A status and a pending asylum case—though a court date has never been set—but I also applied for permanent residency and haven't heard anything yet; they just requested evidence, and that was the last I heard.

Congressional inquiry

My USC son filed my petition 12/25/25 for adjustment of status. I had a job and had to stop working due to cancellation of TPS. My job gave me a 1 year of absence that will up at the end of October 2026, if I don’t return by then I will lose my job. I was hoping to at least get a work permit before my time is up, but I have not received any updates.

I have read on here of congressional inquiries. My question is, who should do the inquiry? My USC son or can I do it myself? Which documents should I submit with it?

Thank you

130 approved 485 pending Tampa FO

I-485 pending since March 2024 – Tampa FO – Anyone with a similar timeline?

Hi everyone! I’m trying to see if anyone with the Tampa Field Office has a similar timeline and is still waiting for their I-485.
My timeline:
I-130 & I-485 filed concurrently: March 29, 2024
Biometrics: May 10, 2024
I-485 actively reviewing: August 24, 2024
I-130 approved: August 29, 2024
No interview so far
I-485 still pending as of August 2026
Marriage-based adjustment of status
Tampa, FL Field Office
My I-130 was approved almost two years ago, but my I-485 has now been pending for about 29 months.
I contacted USCIS and was told that my case was within normal processing times. I also recently contacted my U.S. Senator’s office for assistance and I’m currently waiting for them to process my request.
Is anyone else with Tampa FO still waiting from early 2024? Especially anyone who filed around March/April 2024 and already has an approved I-130?
I’d love to hear your timeline and whether you’ve had any recent movement, interview, RFE, or approval. I’m trying to figure out if this is common for Tampa or if my case is unusually delayed.
Thank you!

OPT Start Date vs. EAD Approval Date — Can I Start Employment on the Approval Date?

Hi everyone, I have a question regarding my OPT start date and unemployment days.
I filed my OPT application on 4/24 and upgraded to premium processing on 7/21. My OPT case was approved on 8/17, but I have not received my physical EAD card yet.
I’ve seen several people on Reddit mention that their EAD “Card Valid From” date was the same as their OPT approval date, so I’m wondering how this works in practice.

My offer letter currently states that my start date must be on or before 9/14/2026.

My questions are:

  1. If my EAD card shows a “Card Valid From” date of 8/17, can I ask my employer/HR to change my employment start date to 8/17, even though I have not physically received the EAD card yet?
  2. If I cannot legally start employment until I physically receive the EAD card, will the days between 8/17 and the actual date I start working count toward my 90-day unemployment period?
  3. If the above is not possible, what would be the best way to minimize the number of unemployment days used?
I would really appreciate any advice, especially from people who have been in a similar situation or have experience with OPT/SEVIS reporting.
    Thank you!

3rd FTA0

Is 3rd FTA0 normally links with biometrics day? My spouse and I both got 3d FTA0 on August 13 but no SU. I am trying to understand if that FTA0 is just part of general batch update or it really means an advancement on the case. My case is still on NBC and Spouse's case is on San Diego FO. Receipt date March 18 and Biometrics April 8.

Pending Form I-131 Re entry permit approval

I would like to ask the community if there is any one who had the same experience as my son's case right now and get your opinion before I call the USCIS for updates since reaching them by phone really takes time.

Our application was received by USCIS on May 20 and my son had his biometrics on June 9, 2026 related to this application and went back to Philippines to complete his last year in senior high school on June 13. This is our second time applying for this permit, the first time we had it approved within 2 months with 2 years validity that expired last June 23, 2026. Upon checking the processing time this year it showed 16 months which is way beyond his intended stay outside US.

My question is, does he has to re-enter here in the US by Dec 13 to avoid the 6 months absent outside US or will it still be safe to just wait there in the Philippines and max the 1 yr outside US hoping that the permit will be issued before that? Another question is, worst case scenario that he stays there till mid July which is the target graduation day, will it be a problem for him when he returns in the US after a little bit over a year if he still will not get hold of the permit or the notice and biometrics proofs will be enough for him to present to the CBP officer or he may be denied entry?

Please share with us if you know of any one or yourself had experienced similar to this. He will be staying here for good with me and my other son next year and continue his college here. With the situation in immigration right now, I am just so scared to take the risk.

Thank you for your time and responses.

I-485 denied

I got my I-485 denied last month because of USCIS error. They messed up my A-number and my name with another person who already has green card. I am in my F1/OPT so no removal proceedings. They claimed in the denial letter that I can stay here even my I-485 was denied because I already had green card. They told me to apply for I-90 to ask for replace the green card instead of I485, and they approved I-130. We sent I-290B and have not received anything from then. Is there anyone filed 290B and get approved? How long is it going to take and what would happen after I-290B approve? Will I have green card if my I-290B approved? I am so stressed right now. I have never been out of status during the time staying here. I went home twice every year and renews visa. I thought my case is really strong but now I’m just waiting and don’t know the timeline for I-290B

Should I fear retaliation following bar complaint against immigration lawyer?

Hi all,

Location: NY, NYC Field Office

Last week, I made this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/USCIS_FORUM/comments/1vnn7mr/immigration_lawyer_prepared_paperwork_never/

TLDR: Incompetent lawyer that I've since fired, struggling to get refund/full case files within my requested time frame. Frankly, I'm at the point where I'm giving up on the refund, as her emails have been somewhat incomprehensible and she's, at the very least, not going to refund the full amount.

Thank you to everyone who gave advice so far. Following the advice, I am looking into the process of filing a bar complaint for several reasons, including the above, and also including:

  • lack of communication & frankly abusive and unprofessional communication when it did happen,
  • refusal to show files/documents despite requesting copies up until this point,
  • refusal to allow us to review documents and then neglecting to correct errors on forms that we WERE able to see (i.e., since we had hired her for both myself and my husband, she would often mix up details on official documents and submit without our knowing. For instance, my husbands i485 was riddled with errors, including putting MY mother's maiden name for HIS, that she refused to acknowledge despite persistent comms on our end)

I feel as though I have a legitimate reason to file a complaint, and the emails/comms + lack of comms to back it up, but I worry about any retaliation from her since this is such a sensitive topic.

Has anyone filed a complaint for their immigration lawyer before? What was the outcome? Do I actually have anything to worry about or am I just paranoid?
