Buying a used 2016 Volvo XC60 T5 AWD (I5) with 100k+ miles- should I worry about oil burning ?

I’m considering buying a 2016 Volvo XC60 T5 Premium AWD (2.5L inline-5 turbo) with just over 100k miles, and I’m getting mixed advice.
I spoke to a mechanic who strongly suggested avoiding all 2016 models, saying they’re known for oil burning issues. However, from what I’ve read online, the AWD versions use the older inline-5 engine, while the oil-burning problems are more commonly associated with the newer inline-4 Drive-E engines.
Since this mechanic is experienced, I’m not sure if I’m missing something or if his warning applies broadly to all 2016 XC60s regardless of engine type.
Has anyone here owned or worked on this specific configuration (2016 XC60 T5 AWD with the 2.5L I5)? Are oil burning issues a real concern for this engine, or is it mostly limited to the inline-4 models?
Any advice on reliability, common issues, or things to look out for before buying would be really helpful.

Volvo rim need to be replaced?

Just got a quote for $2,292.21 to replace the wheel of my 2023 Volvo xc60. My car is vibrating when driven above 60mph and experiencing tire pressure issues. Is this not something that could be repaired or does it really need to be replaced asap? #Stupid potholes.

Pre heat/cool

So just picked up a CPO 2025 XC60 MHEV (love it!) but I thought it came with a pre heat and cool function on the app, but it seems I can’t set the temperature. Is this right? Is it just automatic?

Anyone have any idea what this car symbol is on the instrument panel?

Considering xc60, do you feel the age of the platform in any way?

Hey, I really like the XC60 and am considering getting one soon. I'm pitting it against Skoda Superb - I know, entirely different car, but I got some requirements that those two are the ones on the top of the list. While Volvo is more premium in terms of fit and materials, I'm wondering if it's hindered in any way by being based on an older platform.

So,my question to the users, especially those that have experience with other new vehicles aswell - do you see the age in stuff like cameras, sensors, ACC performance, anything like that? I'm not worried about infotainment as that's covered by Google and gets OTA but you can't OTA update ACC hardware :)

Thanks!

Split pipe & Engine Light

My Daughter has a 2012 XC60 - the engine light came on today - on opening up the hood we found a split pipe/tube and when we checked the codes - it gave us a P0128.

I assume the two things are connected? The split pipe/tube is right next to where the battery is, if my photo is not clear.

2023 XC60 visor wiring

Can anyone tell me what these red and black wires behind my passenger side’s visor mirror are for? I don’t have HomeLink or auto-dimming. Thanks!

My new Volvo XC60 Denim blue Black edition

Just showing off my new XC60. I hope it gets more upvotes than my gfs S60. Love the car. Absolutely good decision to get it instead of an X3. Looks stunning both inside and out. Zero problems.

XC40? Fjord Blue w/ Blonde Steering Wheel

Trying to find a fjord blue with blonde interior AND blonde steering wheel. In bright (chrome) trim.
Not sure if that combo can be found in the used market. But not sure if it even ever existed. I see a few blonde interior but with charcoal steering wheel. Does anyone know if that total blonde interior can be found? Thank you!

Wheel downsizing with fender extensions - any pics?

Hi all,
I’m getting a good deal on a brand new Bright Pack T8 Ultra in Mulberry Red. Only “issue” is it has the 22” wheels.

I like how they look, but I would want something smaller for the winter and the 21” are actually the wheels I prefer. Dealer says they can put on the 21s no charge.

My only question is: how will that look in the wheel arches?

I know there was a thread on this already but can’t find it. Would you guys mind sharing pics of smaller wheels with the widebody?

Thanks!!

2021 vs 2022+?

My husband and I are looking into purchasing a used xc60. We have found a few 2021 models with low mileage (less than 30k). I have read that 2022 tech is much improved from older models - is it a huge difference? Should we only be looking at 2022 and newer?

Update: not referring to hybrid models (haven’t found many in our area); but interior tech like navigation system, etc. I’m not the best with cars so please excuse any ignorance :) my husband doesn’t use Reddit.

XC60 T8 Recharge 2024 - Stepping down from 22" Wheels

Hey gang, we need to step down from our 22" rims to something smaller to allow for higher profile tires. Not only is the ride is terrible with 22s, a pothole pinched 2/4 tires this weekend... We were going to do this anyway, but the flats sealed the deal. I'm seeing all sorts of advice out there about what will/will not fit over our brake calipers. Since this is a T8 recharge we've got bigger breaks. It's been polestar tuned apparently, but isn't the polestar edition.

Our dealer says 20" is safe. 19" might work. 18" is not really going to happen. We want to get this back on the road pronto so Costco wheels/tires (Velox) is what we were looking at. Anyone have experience with this? Here's what the dealer shared for fitting...

20" Rims
255 45 R20 Tires LR 105

19"
235, 55 19 LR 105

We are in northern New England so we would also be looking at snows/studs for an extra set of tires etc down the road.

Just bought my first real car

Finally I've bought myself a XC60 R-Design 2019 with 135k. The car handles very well, no lag or hesitation.

After 300km in a few days, just got the P0420 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold). I know this seems to be normal and expected.

Here's the facts,

The car has been on sale for a few weeks so I can "assume" that this car wasn't being driven a lot so I've fulled the car and went my way.

I've cleared the code after 250km ish, did the recommended drive (highway, steady speed, etc) and it came back.

Next steps :

Do a test drive 30-45 minutes with the obd2 adapter recording all data.

Questions:

Should I be worried ?

Should I ask the dealer for explanation?

Looking to buy used XC60

Hi. I’m looking to buy a used xc60, not had a Volvo before but always liked the xc60. Can probably afford 2016-2017, looking at an automatic Diesel, either 2.0 or 2.4. Is there anything I need to be aware of or is this a bad idea altogether?? I suspect the mileage will be around 80k for my budget, circa £11-12k

2019 Volvo XC60 Hybrid Plug-in T8 R-Design eAWD

Would you buy a 2019 Volvo XC60 Hybrid Plug-in T8 R-Design eAWD today for around $24k if it has 77k miles? Would it cost too much to maintain moving forward?

2022 XC60 Recharge fully loaded: What should I be asking?

Seeing a 2-3k variation between the offers from KBB, CarMax, Carvana, Stealership. Car has 38k miles, not extended range but all the options: Air suspension B&W, mint condition (very minor kerb rash). Extended factory warranty (cost me $4,600, potentially partially refundable). Blonde interior. Have owned from new. East Coast. What should/could I be asking if I advertise it privately? (Do not want to trade it in).

Volvo’s 8-Month Warranty Nightmare: My XC60 T8 PHEV is now just a heavy, gas-guzzling SUV, and Volvo Sweden refuses to help. Has anyone else experienced this?

TL;DR: My 2020 Volvo XC60 T8 high-voltage battery suffered a catastrophic hardware failure in Nov 2025. It’s fully covered under the 8-year factory warranty. Volvo has cancelled my repair 5 times due to parts shortages and now says maybe July 2026. They refuse to give me a loaner or pay for the massive increase in my fuel costs because the car is technically "drivable" on petrol. Looking for advice or similar experiences!
Hey everyone, I’m at my wit's end and want to warn others / see if anyone else is trapped in this corporate stalling tactic from Volvo. I'm located in Sweden.
I bought a 2020 XC60 T8 Plug-in Hybrid through the official "Volvo Selekt" program. In mid-November 2025, the high-voltage battery completely died. Customer Care has confirmed in writing that this is a genuine hardware failure (not the software lock from the massive LG battery recall) and that it falls 100% under their 8-year/160,000 km factory warranty.
Because the hybrid system is dead, I’ve been driving a very heavy, purely combustion-engine SUV for 6 months. My fuel consumption has skyrocketed from 1.2 L/100 km to 8.4 L/100 km. On top of that, I’m paying 350 SEK/month to my housing association for a dedicated EV charging spot I can’t use.
Here is the nightmare timeline of my scheduled repair dates:
• February 10 (Cancelled)
• March 10 (Cancelled)
• March 30 (Cancelled)
• April 30 (Cancelled)
• May 19 (Cancelled)
Yesterday, they told me to come back on July 10, 2026. That will be 8 months of driving a broken car.
Here is the absolute kicker: I demanded a comparable PHEV loaner car or financial compensation for the 7x increase in my fuel bills while I wait for their supply chain to catch up.
Volvo Customer Care formally denied both. Their official stance is:
1. Because the car can physically roll forward using the petrol engine, it is "drivable," therefore I am not entitled to a loaner.
2. They refuse to cover the extra fuel costs, offering only vague future "goodwill" after the repair is done.
3. They even had the audacity to tell me that if I want to trade the car in, they will lower the trade-in value because the hybrid battery is broken—a battery covered by their warranty that they are failing to supply parts for!
In Sweden, consumer law (Konsumentköplagen) strictly states that warranty repairs must be done within a "reasonable time" and without "significant inconvenience" to the customer. Forcing a customer to burn 8.4 L/100km of petrol during a national fuel crisis for 8 months seems like the definition of an inconvenience.
I’m currently drafting a formal demand for damages (skadestånd) and preparing a report to the National Board for Consumer Disputes (ARN) to force a buyback (hävning), but I feel like Volvo is intentionally keeping customers in the dark and bleeding us dry at the gas pump to cover for their own supply chain failures.
Has anyone else been caught in this endless loop with Volvo hybrid batteries? Did you manage to force them to give you a loaner or cover your fuel? Any tips on dealing with their Customer Care wall would be hugely appreciated.
