3D printing clay pass the "vibe" check?

Do 3D printed pieces not count as hand made? What if the creator makes the model and dips or paints the slip? Or makes a multi color clay? Is it not handmade until it's painted?

Here's a fun question: If I printed an available STL - say of an owl mug.. would it not be handmade? But I give it to my grandma and she paints it? is it only hand-painted? What if I designed the model - then is it "hand"made? or what if I carved it out of wood and scanned it? Does it change the conversation if the creator has a medical issue that doesn't allow them to work on the wheel but they make some amazing models using a space mouse or visually directed CAD?

Genuinely looking for acceptable terminology - I would never want to take anything away from anyone who feels like they've earned the right to label their art in a specific manner - so prior to gifting or sharing anything we make I want to make sure that I have some feedback from other creators - if I'm allowed to call myself that ;)

Genuine question and full transparency I took a class and I would consider myself meh at the wheel. I'm asking mostly because I've started printing pottery and want to see what the community thinks. I've seen so much interest from people outside of the pottery community but maybe 1/10 people who seem active on reddit and discord are extremely against it. Also I am very open to understanding different perspectives so genuinely looking on exploring all opinions and reasons for those opinions. I probably have only printed about 5-7 different models and only about to print a few of my own design - but we have some ideas and we've been experimenting. I'm not planning on selling anything so I won't be posting a link to my store or anything like that - only if you are interested I'll share pics of what I've printed but the goal of the post is to get community insight.

I used air clay to make bases for rocks to sit upright and latest creations

All are original except the beehives, I used Snowdonia Rock tutorials.

Acrylic paint pens, brush, mineral powder, UV sealed (I'm still getting the hang of it).

I used air clay to form a base. It's hard! I'll paint them black with a resin. The ladybugs will sit on fake grass with a green pinecone tree. The cottages will also be together and sit on driftwood with the cabled rope backdrop to hang.

I hope you like them!

Made something with air dry clay for the first time

My childhood dogs name was snoopy so I wanted this to be my first clay creation. And can I coat it with clear nail polish for a glossy look? Or I have varnish too so should I use that?

[help]What clay should I get for doll sculpting?

I’m about to finish my current pack of clay (DAS air dry clay) and it’s not my favorite to use so I was looking for other suggestions. I think I’m trying to decide between la Doll premier, la Doll premix, and Creative Paperclay but other suggestions are welcome!

The Summer Hikaru Died inspired trinket dish I finished recently

Just wanted to share some pics of my anime inspired trinket dish I completed recently! Don't ask how long this sat on my shelf half painted before I finally finished it. I used Fimo air dry clay, acrylic paint, and polyurethane to varnish it.

Mixing Oil Paints into Cold Porcelain Clay

One of the easiest ways to create realistic clay flowers is by coloring your clay with oil paints before sculpting.

Many cold porcelain clays become slightly translucent after drying and may develop a subtle yellow or gray tint. To achieve a softer, more natural look, mix a tiny amount of **Titanium White oil paint** into the clay before adding other colors. This makes the clay more opaque while preserving its flexibility. Be careful not to add too much—an amount about half the size of a pea is enough for a ball of clay around 5 cm (2 inches) wide.

Once the white paint is evenly mixed in, add your chosen oil colors. Oil paints blend exceptionally well with cold porcelain, producing rich, smooth shades that stay vibrant over time. They are also gentler on the clay than many other colorants, helping it remain workable during sculpting.

Keep in mind that heavily colored clay may become less elastic and dry out faster. If that happens, knead in a tiny amount of hand cream or a drop of water to restore its softness.

Another important tip: most colors become one or two shades darker after the clay dries. Always test your color on a small piece first if you're trying to match a specific flower.

You don't need an expensive paint collection to get started. A small palette is enough: Titanium White, Yellow, Red, Magenta, Green, Blue, Violet, and Black. By mixing these colors, you can recreate almost any natural flower shade.

Zashiki Warashi air dry clay figure 👻🧒👘

Zashiki Warashi is a Yokai that has both a good and mischievous side, the same as stories about them. Some say that they bring luck to the house they came to. Some say that they are attracted by the luck that is already in the house. But in every tale, they mention that Zashiki Warashi will take the luck of the house with them when they leave, if the house isn't taken care of well. It makes me somehow feel connected with my situation, when I don't really know what my future will be. It may be good, it may be tough. Everything ahead is just a mysterious mist. The only thing that I can be sure of is I'm freely doing what I want to do, freely enjoying my life. Just like the Zashiki Warashi will keep the good fortune to the house that is taken care of well. I believe that as long as I'm doing it with my whole heart, it will lead me to the right destination, and I'm still on the right path.

If you're interested in my process of making this figure, you could take a look at my sculpting video here.

Can I salvage this? Next steps?😭

I started making a cat but let it dry outside which I found out is horrible + makes it crack. Then I did the tail and dried inside under a bag, still cracked. I think I am making the clay too wet it just feels SO firm and hard to work with if I don’t wet it.

Should I start all the way over? Any tips are so appreciated.

🌹 Anyone Can Make This Clay Rose

Even beginners can make a beautiful clay rose. Watch this video: I create three different sizes of petals, which gives the rosebud more volume and a natural look. I attach the petals to a wired base using glue, then add color with soft pastel shading. Give it a try — you can do it too!

Glazing help

I'm making cold porcelain cookies like these I found on Pinterest and want to protect them without losing their texture. Resin makes them too shiny. What's a good glaze or sealant that keeps the cookie feel?
