Meridian Ballston

Looking for recommendations to keep my electric bill down from those that have lived in the building.

The units are inefficient, I’m assuming this is driven by the sunroom. I typically keep my ac around 73ish and I face the west side so I’m not getting direct sun.

In my previous apt, I would keep my AC set at 68 and my bill was never over $70 / $80. But since moving, I’ve tried to up the temp since I saw others complain about their bill.

Thus far, I’ve tried to keep my blinds close and shut the door to the sunroom when possible.

It’s only 5 days in the month and I’ve already used 385 kWh. If we continue to have temp in high 80 + I fear my bill will be close to $400.

Thanks so much for any recommendations you may have !!

Is the area around North Rosslyn safe?

Seems like a mostly business area, staying for 2 days while SO is traveling for work - so I’ll be solo around town. Never been to this area so just wondering if it’s fine for a woman to walk around alone

Power Outage Q - Grace & Reva - Crystal City

Hey everyone- regarding the current Crystal City power outage… does the emergency backup power at the Grace and Reva cover refrigerators and AC? I’m away for the weekend and need to know if I have to throw out all of my food… thanks so much.

Need fitness meetup group interest

Hi there everyone! I’ve recently moved to the general area and am still working on forming friendships. One kind of niche area I haven’t seen a huge overlap in is nerds who workout. Long story short, my ideal Saturday is going to the gym, then going to spend the evening playing DND. I know DC is a pretty nerdy, AND fitness focused area, but I haven’t really found a group that overlaps that. Thus, I was thinking of forming my own group and wanted to see if there was any interest in it.

I’m imagining it would be (of course) open to everyone, regardless of fitness level, but it would focus on having regularly scheduled events that combine some kind of movement, whether it be a few laps around the mall, a 15 minute HIIT workout in a park, a hike in a local forest, a rock climbing event, etc, with socialization afterwards. Similar to the run clubs in the area, but aimed at the people who like to play board games, AND box. Or for people who want to be more active, but feel more comfortable in what’s usually described as the “nerdy” activities.

It’s in no way, shape, or form meant to be discriminatory or rude to those who aren’t as fitness-focused. Just a way to combine some interests in what appears to be an underserved niche. Let me know your thoughts!

Best place to see fireworks with monument in background

This is a tradition I’ve had with my kid every year for the last few years - we fly up for this, and it’s my youngest’s first time. However, I don’t want to go to the cluster in DC.

Which site has the best view of the fireworks with the Washington Monument in view? Not sure if Long Bridge or Gravelly would fit that bill… would Iwo Jima be crowded? appreciate any tips, haven’t lived here in 10 years.

Akelius Properties and Rooftop Fireworks

Just learned they aren’t opening the roof for us to watch fireworks (the Barton House). Curious if this is true for all Akelius properties?

Iwo Jima Fireworks Transport

Hi!

With all the road restrictions and the heat, how are people planning to get to Iwo Jima to watch the fireworks? Doesn’t seem like driving or taking a rideshare is going to get you close and the metro is far enough way that doing the 15 minute walk in this heat is still going to be brutal. Any other ideas?

Thanks!

So sick of the flyovers as a pet owner

I live in the Crystal City/Pentagon City area and all these low altitude flyovers are making my cats so stressed out. Not sure WHY they need to fly this close to my apartment building when the 12 people who want to see this are at the National Mall getting heatstroke but the noise is even putting me on edge at this point.

My heart goes out to anyone else trying to handle stressed out pets or kids with this constant noise and I can’t wait for all of this to just be over already.

July 4th Public Transportation question!

Hey fam, I’ve been here 30 days and don’t have a lot of public transportation yet. I’m taking the family to the National Mall for the fireworks, but curious about the best way to do it? Which stations on our side have public parking? Should I be taking a bus to one of the train stations? Help!?

Update: I live in Shirlington
