The absolute hypocrisy of living in arlington right now

sitting here reading about how the governor just vetoed the retail market bill again and it just feels so performative at this point. like they really think keeping storefronts closed in virginia is doing anything when we literally share a river with DC

Its just exhausting watching state politicians argue about "protecting" us while they bleed tax money. nobody in arlington is driving two hours down 66 to go to some overpriced medical monopoly in the middle of nowhere. the reality is we just bypass the whole thing. I just get my drops sent straight to my place from weedz since district couriers have zero issue crossing the key bridge anyway

the state is just handing all our local revenue to dc out of sheer stubbornness. it just blows my mind how disconnected richmond is from how people in nova actually function

rant over, just kinda losing my mind at the local news today.

ExtraSpace Storage

How is it legal to jack up rates by double? There was no email that warned me of this price hike either. For reference, I put my payment history for the previous months leading up to this price hike.

Where to live/not to live

Moving to Arlington at the end of August. Looking to live in the Ballston/Courthouse/Clarendon area. Budget is around $2.5K. I am mostly looking for places to watch out for/to not even bother with. I know experiences vary. There are so many places it’s hard to narrow down. I also have a dog.

Looking for affordable 2B2B in Arlington, VA 😭

My roommate and I are searching for a decent 2B2B in Arlington, ideally around Clarendon, Courthouse, Ballston, Pentagon City, or Crystal City with a max budget of around $3200 total (including parking + utilities if possible).

So far we’ve toured RiverHouse, Dolley Madison Towers, Avalon at Arlington Square, but they’re still kinda pushing our budget. We’re looking for: in-unit W/D, safe area + decent parking situatio

what we don't need: super close to Metro

Would really appreciate any apartment recs, buildings to check out, or even areas we might be overlooking. Pls help 2 girlies out 🫶

Food for large group that is ok to sit outside

My non-profit is hosting a picnic in a couple of weeks that will be held outside at one of the county picnic shelters. We are trying to think of something to order for lunch for 50ppl (of all ages) that will be ok to sit outside the whole time, about 4 hours. There will be other food there, sides and desserts and some people are bringing mains but we'd like to order one more thing to make sure there's enough. Cold sandwiches seem like a bad idea to sit outside so what would be a better idea?

I’m looking for recommendations on websites to use for browsing private condo or home rentals in Clarendon area. Have a healthy budget and looking for a 2BR+/2BA+. Prioritizing a modern space and proximity to The Crossing.

Please feel free to DM me or comment here, but Zillow is showing slim pickings. Many thanks!!

If you like minimal deep house music, stop by Quincy Hall in Ballston on Friday 10-12

Going b2b with my boy for the first time ever. Going to start off with the normal stuff but the real tracks come on later.

Help with antique truck title

Hey neighbors,

We have a 2001 Tacoma that could not pass emissions here and has been sitting in our driveway since we moved here 5 years ago, waiting to hit the antique mark. It was titled in our previous home state but we couldn’t get it changed here without passing emissions. Now we can’t figure out how to register it since it has no valid registration anymore.

Does anybody know this process? Or know of a professional that we could pay to fix this for us? We’d like to be able to drive it again!

How do people make friends in Arlington? (Advice??)

Edit: I wasn’t expecting so many replies & am so thankful to everyone who commented! Lots of good advice and perhaps even some potential friends out there 🤞Might take a day or two to get through them & reply; and if I can figure out how to do a group chat on here I might set one up for coordinating a low key activity for those of us who are interested in meeting fellow Arlingtonians 😊

————————————————————————

I’ve lived here for a couple of years now and I’m wondering if my personality is just a mismatch for the area or if other people are also struggling to establish a local social circle?

I’ve tried Meetups, joined a bowling league, had a Bumble BFF for a while (unsurprisingly, Hinge and Bumble did not yield any close friendships either) and met a lot of really nice acquaintances but no meaningful connections.

Anyone having a similar experience (or previously had a similar experience and wants to share what they did to remedy it)? It has been so nice out lately and it just feels like such a bummer having no one to go on walks, dinner, coffee, or whatever with.

Edited to add that I’m 38F. Realized that’s pretty important since a part of the issue I’m having is that a lot of people I meet at activities are in their early-mid 20s and I just feel like we don’t have a lot in common.

The Barton House Apartments (Arlington VA)

I have recently moved in with my partner, and I wanted to shout out my old apartment building.

https://www.akelius-properties.us/barton-house/floorplans/one-bedroom-with-balcony?Beds=1&Apt=408

I have lived here for the last 4 years, and my rent has only gone up ~$30 a year. Very reasonable increases, never once felt gauged. Neighbors are nice as well, never had any issues, and I used to be the party house.

Just wanted to share with yall!

Reva Apt in Crystal City

Anyone else who lives at Reva dealing with way too many maintenance issues??? I moved here two years ago for work and I’ve had to put in at least 20 maintenance requests since then. And not just minor things. No hot water, broken washer, broken fridge x2, water leaks in the ceiling x2, etc. Truly makes me wonder about the quality of this almost $5000 apartment I’m paying for every month. While I love pretty much everything else about living here and the area, the maintenance issues are just completely excessive and inconvenient. I lived in my prior apartment in TN for 3 years and had 0 maintenance needs. And paid half of what I’m paying now.

Just venting and wondering if it’s just my apartment that appears faulty 😅

*I will add that the maintenance staff are wonderful and very efficient, which makes this bearable. But still, very inconvenient and annoying.

Hole in the wall restaurant gems

This past weekend I traveled to Philadelphia for the weekend. Friday was my b-day and I wanted to make a reservation at a nice Italian restaurant. I didn't want to travel too far from my hotel in northern Philly so I made a reservation at at small, family run Italian restaurant. The place has maybe 10 tables and is BYOB.

It has high ratings, and the food and experience justified it. My wife had incredible branzino, and my Ravioli was the best I've had since visiting Capri. We had a great time, and now I am looking for similar places that have the same business model - not corporate owned, small, cozy with great food and a welcoming atmosphere. Doesn't need to be in Arlington; I posted here because I live in Arlington. Also doesn't need to be Italian food, but Italian dining lends itself well to my description.

FWIW - The place in northern Philly is called Fiorino for those of you interested.

I mean, what’s it with messy, stupid mulberries?

Picked these today. White Mulberries they say. Small, fragile, messy. What do I do with em? I freeze em. Then in August, on a hot humid afternoon, I whip out the vanilla ice cream and some milk and a chunk of…frozen mulberries, and make the ultimate Virginia milkshake. As Vincent Vega says, “Mmmm that’s a helluva milkshake”.
