I moved to the area about 6 months ago, mostly all I’ve done is work. There are a billion restaurants between Roslyn and Ballston, but it seems like if you want to do anything else (like a comedy show, a play, live music, etc) you need to go into DC or out into other parts of NOVA.
I could be wrong, please let me know if you have any recommendations!
I’m 30 years old, moved to Ballston in May, and basically all I’ve done since moving here is work an incredible amount of overtime. I’m getting burnt out and depressed, despite living in a super walkable and active city for the first time in my life. I go to therapy, and it was recommended that I join a scheduled social club to promote body movement and meeting new people.
I’m honestly so overwhelmed with where to begin though. I have played guitar for 15+ years and sing very well, but I have never done these in a public setting, so I’m not sure which groups to even look for. Other than that, I used to practice BJJ and other combat sports when I was 20.
Is there maybe a list of local hobby/sports groups in the area? I don’t prefer to use the meetup app, and just googling this question seems to be a flood of advertisements.

I’m on vacation on the West coast for the first time, it’s a tradition for me to swing by any IBEW locals on my road trips to get a shirt. I popped into Oregon on my way to the Red Woods and saw local 659 was perfectly on my route. They’re a smaller local, showed me great hospitality, sold me this shirt and hoodie, gave me a bunch of stickers and a challenge coin, took me in the back office and chatted for a while about work culture differences on the East and West Coast.

I’m a journeyman wireman, did my full apprenticeship IBEW. A big reason I started this career path is because the idea of living and working in other places seemed appealing to me. My wife works from home, so she can move anywhere at anytime.
I’ve only ever lived in the South. I think it could be a really cool life experience to try living on the west coast, with the added benefit of helping a local that needs manpower.
First picture is us driving towards Mount Shasta, next three are close to the Peak in Lassen Volcanic National Park, and the last two are crawling around the caverns of Lava Beds National Monument.

I like to sing, I’ve been told that I’m pretty good, and I’d like to make a more serious hobby out of it. I’m hoping to find a private instructor or school between Ballston and Roslyn, but I’m open to more than that.
I travel internationally a lot with my wife, I’ll go multiple weeks living out of a single carry on bag and washing clothes. Because space is so precious, I’ve been trying to find a good “all around” shoe that I can wear my entire trip. One that I can comfortably walk through downtown Tokyo, cobblestone streets in the UK, and hiking trails in Peru.
I got these Yamano 3’s by Flowermountain after doing a ton of research, it seems like they’ll work exactly like I want them to. I went with blue because it’s my favorite color, but my wife is telling me I should have gotten a gray or off-white to match with a wider variety of clothes.
I try to pack shirts and pants that all match each other and are quick to dry after washing, this way even with 3 pants and 3 shirts, I technically have 9 different outfit combos. Did I make a mistake with getting blue shoes? Should I get a more neutral color instead?
One of the best trips of my life! I have a million pictures of each, but these are my favorites.
I moved here about a year ago, but this will be the first time my niece comes to visit. She is quiet and very mature for her age, she gets anxious easily and loves reading in her room. She and I would visit very small art museums when I lived in my home state, so I have a few ideas where I should take her in that regard.
What I’m asking in this post; is there a specific museum or space in the city that an aspiring young author would especially appreciate? Some place quiet would be nice, but isn’t completely necessary. She has only ever lived in car centric suburbia, and I’m worried that a big walkable city may be stressful.
I love her so much, and it’s important to me that she has a nice visit. Thank you in advance for any responses :)
I have a wool hat that I mostly use for hiking and travel, gets way too hot to wear it half the year so I’m getting a straw hat. I ordered two, I’m going to return the one that doesn’t fit. I measured my head, and the measurement is the exact spot that one size ends and the other begins. My wool hat of the same brand is a large, but I think it may have stretched a bit because it feels perfectly in the middle of these two.
First one is an XL, it feels maybe too loose. It falls right on my head and sits low, comfortably just at the tip of my ears. When I move my head back and forth, it wiggles a bit but doesn’t fall off. To be honest, I like the look of this one better and it feels more comfortable. I’m a bit worried though that I’ll be hiking up a mountain, and a good breeze will take it right off my head. It doesn’t feel like it’s grabbing my head, but resting gently on it.
The second one is a Large, it maybe feels a bit too tight. It sits higher on my head which I don’t love the look of, but I read that they’re supposed to sit a bit above your ears. When I try to push it down to actually sit on my head, it feels… a little more than snug. When I move my eyebrows up and down the hat follows because of how much it grabs my forehead, when I wiggle my head, it doesn’t budge at all. I’m worried with this one that I’ll get a headache in the sun from how tight it is, and again I don’t love how high it sits.
I would really appreciate any advice, I’ve been wanting a good straw hat for a while. Thanks y’all!
I’m looking to get a hiking hat for the Summer time, seems a nice straw hat would be perfect for me. I’ve seen this one recommended a few times in other subreddits, $115 seems a bit pricey for a straw, but I don’t mind paying for good quality.
A couple years ago, my best friend and I each bought a Stetson hat, and drove/hiked/camped all over West Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona mid Winter. I didn’t care if we looked silly at the time, we called it our “cowboy” trip and we had an absolute blast.
That hat has been sitting in my closet since our trip though, I haven’t worn it a single time because I’m worried I’d look silly or gimmicky.
Please be honest, do I wear the hat well or should I never touch it again?
I haven’t played this game in many years, it’s soooo different! I’m very excited to get back into it. The last time I played, you would get a perk point for each time that your village leveled up, now it looks like you pick an origin. My map has fertile land, and a strong resource of salt, I’m on the Wide Valley map. My end goal is to go all in on farming and animal husbandry; a mix of cows and sheep. I also plan on making a handful of very long burgage plots to make vegetables and apple trees.
The bamberg small holdings looks appealing because I can set the vegetable and apple residents to work their homes full time, I imagine this would especially make a great boost in food production during the early game as I start to build my farms and import animals.
The Weiden Hinterlands seems like it could be good so that I can purchase livestock for much cheaper, and mine salt much faster. I don’t entirely understand the “high-elevation” farming, is that map specific? Would that even matter on Wife Valley?
I don’t want to min-max, I’m ok not being 100% efficient, but what do you think would be the best origin for my map and goals?
It’s always genji for me. I feel like it should be an easy match up, since he’s a “light weight” flanker, but I really struggle with the 1v1’s. His reflect blocking my hits, and his dash going through my shield is brutal. I’m Master 5 too, so it’s not like I’m just bad at Brig.
Winston’s another one. You can damage his shield, hit him, and heal your teammates at the same time. Sounds like a great match up right? He always ends up just tickling me down through my shield, then jumping me when I try to use my escape. I always struggle against a Winston.
