Ørjan Nyland

I'm not misremembering am I, the magical physics-defying free kick save aside, he was pants for the Villa?

Looks a different beast at this WC.

Mid century x Villa

Maybe a bit niche but had a go at a poster design in that old mid-century Saul Bass style.

Question on Wages

As this is proving to be yet another difficult window for us, I’ve been increasingly referring to this website to confirm our standing on wages.

I gather that the figures with a green check mark have been verified, but is there any truth at all to the others? Because if so, I think we need to have a serious chat about some of the names at the top of the list. If we can remove Bailey and (unfortunately) Mings from our payroll in this window to the tune of £230,000 a week, ≈£150k of that can be reinvested into 3 promising young players from the continent while the rest can be a necessary sacrifice to appease UEFA’s squad cost regulations.

Please let me know if there’s something I’m missing here or if there’s no truth to these numbers.

Beinlich and Breitkreutz

Hello fellow Villa fans, have been meaning to engage with the Reddit for a while now, so here I go. I had a very specific and probably niche question:

What was the deal with Villa signing Beinlich and Breitkreutz back in the early 90s? Who's idea was that? I had always thought they were Venglos signings, that he'd had a tip off, agreed to sign them and then got the push.

But from what I've read he had nothing to do with it. I can't see Big Ron specifically going for them, indeed he rarely played either. Was it Ellis doing Ellis things and getting two players on the cheap after the Berlin wall fell?

Of all our former enigmas I think they are my faves. Beinlich went on to have a very decent career of course, and all power to him.

What is the story with all.the recent...

"I've decided to like football and I choose Aston Villa, new fan, whats up" posts lately...

Is it a running gag im not aware of because there seems to be a disproportionate amount of them recently.

Der Hammer

Always enjoy listening to Hitzlsperger, and tonight it prompted me to watch his 12 Villa goals on YouTube. Obviously, there's one in particular that stands out! If anyone's unsure of what qualifies as a 'thunderbastard', that's it there.

This led me to have a quick scan at his career; Bayern under 19's, Villa, Stuttgart, Lazio, West Ham, Wolfsberg, Everton. The only fee anyone ever paid for him (Lazio I think) was £550K. The rest were free's. I know he never quite realised his early promise at Villla, but that's still mental.

What would you sell Bogarde for?

This is ofcourse if Villa were to sell, but I’ve seen a raft of opinions on his valuation, some going as low as £15m.

I think we can rule out him going for that low a fee but what would you realistically want for him. Based on the current market, his importance in the squad (the only homegrown player), and his age and experience I can see a lot of clubs being interested.

If Bergvall, who has said he wants to leave and who couldn’t get into a Spurs team that finished 17th is valued at £40m that is probably what Villa will be looking for (although he is only 20 and probably seen as a bigger prospect).

I can see Villa accepting lower than that but would going as low as £30m be seen as cheap in this current market?

Edit: wow I didn’t realise Bogarde was hated by our fanbase so much. Shocked at the suggestion of below £20m which is basically less than what we got for Iroegbunam based on inflation. I think fans will be surprised at how much he goes for as he is heavily sought after and will only increase in value.

This could be one we come to regret as Brighton have a record of turning players into superstars and he would be perfect for them.

When do you think they will announce the new shirt sponsor?

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on when Villa will announce their new sponsors? Will it be Audi? Would love to see something like BYD or Revolut

Thought of the Day: Arsenal see us as rivals and are trying to take away our best players

Ok you made it to the description and if you’re a visiting arsenal fan I hope you’re sufficiently triggered, let’s be honest, it doesn’t take much…

But in seriousness though, they seem pretty obsessed with us and taking away Rogers, Konsa, hell they may even look at someone like Youri or Kamara. They seem pretty set on depleting our squad or key players, and deluded enough to believe we would come down on player valuations on players we don’t want to sell.

Also do Arsenal fans not understand the concept of a deterrent. Like their main talking point is the valuation that Rogers is way too high priced, as if somehow they believe we would lower the price to evaluation that they could afford just because they want him. That’s not how it works lads xD

PSR and SCR fines

Why are financial penalties associated with SCR breaches?

Financial penalties will impact profit, which in turn limits reinvestment to increase revenue. There is also a limit on how much our owners can invest of their money.

As the aim is to ensure long term financial security of the clubs this would seem to be hugely counter productive to the stated aims.

a Villa performance that changed how you saw a specific player

Sometimes it only takes one game for a player to go from someone you barely noticed to someone you're actually excited to watch every week. Happened to me with a fairly unexpected name last season. Anyone else have a moment like that.

I Choose YOU!

American here, this World Cup really sparked my interest in football and i've been trying to find a team to support.

I took one of those "What Premier League team should I support" quizzes and got Aston Villa.

I then saw a reddit post comparing college (American) football teams to EPL teams, and my college football team was compared to Aston Villa.

I feel like it's fate now.

Helps that the colors are great too.

It may be boring, but we need to talk about actively protesting against SCR as football fans.

The stated aim of UEFA's Squad Cost Ratio is to make sure clubs spend a sustainable share of their revenue on squad costs, so they live within their means and avoid financial instability. On paper, that's a sensible goal. But in practice, SCR doesn't seem to be achieving what it was introduced to do.

Transfer fees keep rising. Wages keep rising. Clubs with the biggest revenues and the strongest commercial power can still spend at a level others simply can't match. The market hasn't become fairer; it has become more selective.

What SCR appears to do is decide which clubs are allowed to compete in a market dictated by their own superior spending ability, and as a result, deciding which clubs are allowed to actively compete at the highest level.

Clubs with enough revenue can keep paying £70m, £80m, £100m+ for players with no outside interference. However, clubs without that revenue aren't protected from the resulting inflation - they're just prevented from competing on equal terms.

The problem is that SCR is tied to revenue. That means the clubs with the biggest revenues also have the greatest freedom to spend. They can keep pushing transfer fees and wages higher while still staying within the ratio. So instead of controlling inflation, the system allows the richest clubs to set the price of the market.

That is how squad-building costs keep rising. Not because Aston Villa, or other similar clubs, are overspending, but because the clubs with the largest incomes can keep raising the benchmark for everyone else. They set transfer fees and wages at a level which prevent us from competing within the SCR rules.

Clubs without that revenue aren't protected from inflation; they're just prevented from competing on equal terms.

This summer shows the problem.

Villa have grown their revenue through Champions League qualification, have spent relatively conservatively in recent windows, and are still operating under UEFA restrictions.

Meanwhile, other clubs with greater financial power continue to spend heavily. They're not breaking the rules, they're using them to inflate the market and prevent other clubs like Villa from competing in the market, and therefore, as a by-product, likely on the pitch.

SCR doesn't seem to ask whether a club has the means to invest responsibly. It asks whether that club already generates enough revenue to be allowed to do so.

Those are two very different questions.

If a club is well run, has the backing to invest, and meets the ownership suitability rules already in place, why should it be stopped from competing at the same level as everyone else?

If they have the means, they should be allowed to use it.

SCR is ruining our game. It's driving up our ticket prices. It's driving down competitiveness in the market and on the pitch. It's inflating transfer fees and wages.

It's boring, it's irritating. But we need to protest, and I'd argue our club and our fan base should be leading that protest as we are the ones at the gate.

Question for the new fans

What is your earliest memory or reason for gravitating to AVFC?

I’m curious because for me (as an American), we started really getting EPL games on Peacock/NBC regularly and it became easy to watch some clubs over and over and recognize players.

One of my earlier memories where I really fell in love with the players was a match (can’t recall which or when maybe you guys can help me) where Lucas Digne banged heads with an opponent on a play and came a way with a lump the size of a tennis ball on this forehead and just kept playing the second half like a badass. Then you see SJM just own and possess any ball that comes his way and it’s hard not to love this team’s attitude.

Does anyone remember that match?
