Why did all the Azorean locals root for Norway against Brazil?

Im Brazilian-American and came here on vacation to see this beautiful island. I am watching the game with all Azorean locals and bummed out that they want Norway to win, only clapping when the score, and acting disappointed when Brazil does something well. I’m just curious as to why..? Do you Azoreans dislike Brazilians? As Brazilians, we root for Portugal when they play another team and that’s not Brazil. I thought Cabo Verde was a great example of the Lusophone world together but I guess Brazil doesn’t count?

I will never give SATA Airlines any of my money ever again

I’m first generation born in Canada, my parents immigrated like many in the 70s and kept a very strong bond to their native island. Just over ten years ago we bought a family home there and my elderly parents fly every year and spend 3-4 months there. As Azoreans they fly SATA mainly… this might be the last time.

My parents are in their late 70s early 80s and as you can imagine my sister and I do our best to help them get there in an ever more confusing process of travelling for the elderly. My parents fly there every year with their small dog… yesterday in Montreal as they are about to fly out there were told that at the last minute they cannot bring their beloved pet, this after doing it for the past half a dozen years without issue.

This pet is a small dog that is very quiet and sleeps 90% of the way during travel in a small carrier. My parents were forced to leave her behind with my sister and fly out, as you can imaging this left my mom extremely distraught. We’re now scrambling to figure out if we can ship her there or we will be hosting here which is not a huge issue for us. My feelings are purely for the emotional stress this has caused my elderly parents and who have been faithful SATA travellers. They showed no compassion and flexibility at the at the gate.

Items for packing list you wish you had - São Miguel e Pico 🛘🥾🏄‍♂️

Coming up on a summer 2 week trip split between São Miguel and Pico. Itinerary includes a guided hike up Mt. Pico, horseback riding, surfing lessons, snorkeling, visiting hot springs and natural pools, several other hikes, and a day in wineries. What items that, after your Azores trip, were you glad you had? Anything you wish you had that would have proved useful or that would have augmented the experience? Thanks in advance!

Why so many French cars and very few Japanese/Korean?

I was surprised with how many Peugeot/Renault cars are here and how few Japanese and Korean when they also have small efficient cars and better than anything Peugeot/Renault offers. Is it only cause the proximity of the production of French cars?

Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

Visiting Azores for the first time - tips appreciated

First time Azore-Traveller here who is very much looking forward to his visit. We will arrive in mid july and stay for 2 weeks in a hotel on Sao Miguel. I hope somebody here can help me with a few questions:

- Activities: we have a rental car for the whole duration of our stay so we wanna explore Sao Miguel thoroughly. Any hidden gems? We are moderatly fit but not very experienced hikers but want to go on scenic hiking trails. And additionally: a few days we might want to just relax on a beach, any recommendations for sand beaches?

- Clothes: I've read a fair bit about the azores and everybody seems to mention to pack for literally every weather (maybe not snow unless you wanna scale Mt Pico I guess). Given that for july there is only minimal rain forecast in every climate chart I've seen I would opt for a windbreaker and a fleece layer. Is that enough for hiking?

- other island(s): apparantly 14 days is quite long for only Sao Miguel but since we booked all the nights in one hotel we don't have the option to split the days between different islands. Is it possible to do day trips between Sao Miguel and another island and if so what would you recommend?

- final tips: when travelling to new places I often experience the thought of "oh man if only I would have thought of bringing item XY". What are your helpful little accessoires for this trip?

Thank you in advance for helping me plan this trip! :)

Where to watch the Portugal/Spain world cup match on Monday?

I will be on Sao Miguel next week with my son (15 years old). We’re staying near Rabo de Peixe on the north side of the island. Is there a local spot where people will be gathering to watch the match? Someplace where a 15 year old would be welcome?

Rain coat - yes or no?

Hi guys, I’ll be travelling to Sao Miguel from Saturday until Thursday next week. The weather forecast looks lovely. However, I‘ve hard that in the Auores, one can easily experience all four seasons in a day. Considering that I only have a 24L backpack, would you recommend packing a rain coat?

Fruit on Sao Jorge

This might be a long shot as it’s been difficult to search for… Currently talking to my dad about his time on Sao Jorge when he was little. He was wondering if this fruit was still there. He’s from Faja Dos Vimes on San Jorge and he said it was like a yellow berry. He was young and only remembers a little bit.

Order of Islands Visit

We are visiting Sao Miguel and Terceira late September through October from the US. Does it make more sense to do one island before the other? I was thinking Terceira might make sense to do first as clearing customs from the US might be shorter there then in Sao Miguel. Anything we should consider?

Day trip operators from Ponta Delgada?

Greetings from Canada. After dreaming about this trip for years, I will finally be visiting the Azores in September. I've got a week-long small group tour planned that takes me to three or four of the islands and hits many of the highlights. Before the tour starts, I've got 2.5 days in Ponta Delgada, but I will not be renting a car. Are there any local operators that offer day trips to Ponta da Ferraria or other scenic places where I could swim in the sea, soak in hot springs and/or do a half-day hike? Wild swimming (in lakes, oceans, rivers or ponds) is a passion of mine. I welcome all advice, including other scenic swim spots within walking distance of the city centre. Thanks! Obrigado!

Snorkeling in Faial/Pico

Hi Redditors,

I'd like to go snorkeling with my two teens during our time in Faial or Pico (August). I see a few dive operators offering 1-2 hour coastal snorkeling tours from Horta - reviews seem to indicate they select the 'best' option for the conditions that day - Go Shark Azores, Sea Riders. The tour with CW Azores from Madalena goes out to the Ilheus.

My questions for the helpful folks here:

  1. If we book a tour in Horta, will we see anything 'different' on a tour like this versus just going out to the Porto Pim bay ourselves?

  2. Thoughts on booking a tour from Horta vs Pico? AI tells me the sealife will be more interesting off the coast of Horta (but human feed back is more valuable!).

  3. Is this something we need to book ahead of time? Or can we just see how things are going (e.g. weather, jetlag, interests) when we arrive and walk up to the marina in Horta to book? We have four full days in Horta.

THANK YOU!
