Cushings Disease?

Recently my pups vet said she suspects he may have Cushings disease based on a blood test. He’s about 9 years old and other than being a little overweight, he hasn’t exhibited any symptoms that would typically be associated with Cushings.

He’s been on a low fat prescription diet for about 8 months. She said there’s a test she can do that requires him to be in the vets office for a full day to draw blood at various times to confirm Cushings. My understanding is Cushings is diagnosed from high cortisol levels in the blood. My pup is a love bug mamas boy who gets very anxious being away from me and gets anxious at the vets. (He’s the poster pup for a Velcro dog.) Which I feel spikes his cortisol levels. I’m really hesitant to put him through a full day of testing like that.

Can anyone who’s been through this with their pup tell me your experience? I only want the best for him and if he truly does have Cushings disease I’d want to have him treated properly for it. His next visit with the vet is in October and I’m just trying to figure out the next plan of action for him.

My backstory.. I do trust our vet but I guess I have a little PTSD regarding vets. My previous rescue pup went in for a tooth extraction (different vet) and she “accidentally” killed him because she forgot that he had gauze in his throat while he was under, and he died from an obstructed airway. So I’m super protective of this pup. He’s the sweetest boy ever and the idea of dropping him at the vet for a whole day for tests while I’m not there makes me sick.

How big are your Bichons?

I adopted my baby when he was a little over a year old and he was 8.2 lbs then (he was sick as a baby - and so he was pretty bony when he came home). He’s 11 lbs now but he’s still such a cute toy boy. Like a children’s cartoon come to life.

I haven’t done an Embark yet but I wonder if there’s any maltese or poodle in him too. He’s very much a Bichon in every sense though.

How do you bring a new dog into the family after a traumatic loss of the best dog ever?

TW: death

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice - ideally from someone who has had a few bichons over the years.

For background: I had an amazing bichon, the best wee guy, my little shadow. We lost him when he was nine, total shock. He had a heart attack and died one night, totally healthy, no indication of any issues. Genuinely healthy, no problems, clean bill of health from the vet, and suddenly just gone. I was devastated. He was just the best. And he just died, no warning.

That happened just under two years ago and I’m still coming to terms with it. I thought we had years more together.

In the last few months I’ve started to think I am ready for a dog. Not a “new dog” like a replacement. Just… a dog. A new member of the family. Nothing can replace our last dog, but I think we’re ready for a new addition. We’re a family of three (son is 9). He wants a dog, I want a dog, my husband wants a dog. We’re all aligned. We’re a dog family and there’s a hole where our old dog used to be.

BTW I’m not saying the name of our old dog because I need to retain my anonymity, but please know I don’t call him “our old dog”!! He has a name!

I wanted to ask people who have lost dogs before - how do you do it? How do you bring a new dog into the family after a loss?

I have a lot of allergies, and bichons are really the only dog I can tolerate without serious reactions (ended up in hospital a few times after a stray hair or a nip). Bichons are weirdly ok. My face puffs up a bit, but that’s a small price to pay for these wee guys!

How do you do it? You’ve had one, they’re such a big part of your life. You get a new one - does it bring back the memories of the first one? Does it have the same face? Bichons look so similar, I feel like I would see this new puppy and think “my old dog did this too”.

I really want a dog as part of our family, but I don’t know if I’ll mess it up for everyone if I can’t handle my grief here.

Has anyone gone through this? Any advice? Thanks!

Relaxing after a satisfying lunch

Cooked ground turkey, mashed yams and some kibble. Our boy came back from his grooming appointment famished.

The fireworks have already started in my neighborhood 🥺

Because of the World Cup games, fireworks have been going off for the last couple of days where I live. Along with a little tent I purchased for her which she seems to love (last post) I've been wrapping her in blankies and giving her treats to calm her down. I also have a sweater wrap that I put on her on actual 4th of July. She's such a sweet girl and I hate to see her afraid. I used to love Independence Day but I hate it now 😔

Any tips to keep my girl more calm while fireworks go off?

How do you manage separation anxiety?

And if you got your Bichon as a puppy, what was your daily routine with them? I'm mostly focusing on continued potty training and getting my puppy used to her crate and her playpen in the evenings right now (she's only been home with me for a little over a week), but while she pad trained basically overnight, she really struggles with the latter two things. Unsurprisingly, she has terrible separation anxiety and hates anything that keeps her from being right up on top of me all the time. I don't want to give in and never get her acclimated to the crate, but I also don't want her to get too distressed 😭
