This piece carved on vegetable-tanned leather. The design is first hand-tooled into the surface to create the details and expression. The 3D raised effect is achieved using a relief embossing technique from the back, which gives the portrait more depth and dimension. After the carving and forming process, I hand-painted the piece using leather pigment paints, layer by layer, to bring out the colors and expression.

The piece is carved entirely by hand, then painted with acrylics to build natural depth and color layering.

To achieve a 3D effect, the back is lightly filled with a mix of leather scraps and soft filler, giving the piece volume while staying durable and lightweight.

Finished with hand edge-burnishing and sealing for long-term use.

The fur is the hardest part I build the colors in layers to keep natural depth and avoid a flat look. It takes time to get the balance right between light and shadow so the expression feels alive.

I started by tracing this baby’s facial features onto vegetable-tanned leather and carefully carving the details by hand. After shaping and tooling the leather, I gradually built up the colors with multiple layers of paint to capture his expression, eyes, and unique personality. The final step was stitching everything together
