Cyclists are a good bunch…

On my way to Pink Lake lookout this morning (closed due to construction , by the way) I stopped by the side of the road to pump up my rear tire which looked a little low.

No less than 4 people slowed down or stopped (at the base of a climb, mind you) to check in and make sure I was OK. In both official languages, no less.

Thanks for having my back folks. Keep up the good work!

Popped tire, E-bike

Hi there. New to Ottawa. My rear tire popped this morning. I currently don’t have tools to fix it so I was wondering if there are any repairs shops that can help me out. Located near little Italy. Thank you!

Looking for advice on biking from Ottawa to Montreal

Looking for any and all advice on biking from Ottawa to Montreal.

I'm an avid road biker with a well-maintained, vintage Peugeot bike, but this will be the longest bike ride I've done by a long shot. My main question is: Should I consider buying a gravel bike?

I've heard taking the road route on the Québec side is longer and hillier than the Ontario side. Has anyone done both and could suggest which route I should plan for?

Any other advice or tips on training/preparing for this ride welcome! Thanks in advance!

Greenbelt Trail - Kanata To Corkstown

Took a short ride from Kanata to Corkstown on the greenbelt trail. The rail trail section from Kanata to Bells Corners is in great condition, but after that there's some sections that got a lot of damage. It's still passable if you don't mind a few sections of hike-a-bike. The part running next to the 417 was really deep fine gravel and you can slide out if you aren't careful.

Thanks!

Black bear with cubs on Trail #1 in Gatineau Park

I know this is a bike Ottawa group but every license plate in the parking lot was Ontario. Trail 1 near Camp Fortune parkway there is a momma black bear with cubs near the trail. She was bluff charging hikers so be careful!

mer bleu trail report - trees down!

First visit in a bit - many many large trees blocking pretty much all trails on west side.

Some are passable on foot but not all by bike, FYI.

Off trail conditions were mucky wet and hordes of skeeters and flies.

You can get around but you might be back tracking!

Did I make a mistake buying a road bike for commuting?

Hey everyone,

I recently bought a Decathlon RC 100 road bike for short daily commuting and the occasional ride on bike paths just for fun. I’m pretty new to cycling, so I don’t have much experience with different types of bikes.
Originally, I was planning to buy a mountain bike, but then I figured, “Why would I? I’ll be riding on roads 99% of the time.” So I went with the road bike instead.
Now that I’ve ridden it for a couple of days, I’m starting to wonder if I made the wrong choice. The roads where I live are pretty rough, and even a lot of the bike lanes have endless cracks, bumps, and potholes. I feel every single one of them through the bike because of the skinny tires, and it makes the ride much less comfortable than I expected.
I’m also a bit worried about getting frequent punctures because of the thin tires.

For those of you who own road bikes or hybrids, is this just something you get used to, or would a hybrid have been a better choice for my situation? Are there any upgrades I could make (wider tires, lower tire pressure, etc.) that would make a noticeable difference, or should I consider switching bikes while I still can?
I’d really appreciate any advice from people who’ve been in a similar situation.
Thanks!

Is there any other damage to the MUPs from the flood?

Specifically from Andrew Haydon Park to downtown? I have been out of town and just got back. I didn’t see any posts so I assume they are okay. I hope.

Downtown agro - WTH?

Wow - the aggressivity of vehicle drivers in and around downtown/Market around noon July 1 was positively scary! Can confirm!!
40 year daily downtown bike rider here, no car - 100% comfortable in heavy traffic and know how to take my lane. 6'2", 200lbs.
Never in 40 years biking downtown has ANYONE ever challenged me? Car, truck or otherwise. I drive to stay alive.

In front of the Chateau Laurier headed into the Market. City full of peds, traffic and jets. In red light traffic, I was straight on revved and overtaken by a 30-something PQ Subaru WRX in my own lane, bumper 6" from my tire! We rolled less than 75' - to a RED LIGHT! He then felt it was important to roll down his window and ask me angrily (in English!) "Are you a car or bike? Which?". Revved again.

Five blocks later I watched a tour bus completely pull over and almost roll over a commuter cyclist in a suit! Biker was nimble but the bus driver was oblivious!!

WOW

Did my longest day ever and forced my self out of downtown

Over all goal was to see if I could make it to my in laws place I. Kanata, but also wanted to see how much I could stay on the trails incase I ever convince my wife to do it in the future.

Usually i don't wander much past baseline but I felt i should challenge my self this past weekend. Took the river path to Andrew H and then up to green belt to get into Kanata. Spent some time with inlaws and then zipped back again. Was hot tired and a bit sun burnt and my knees did much like me. But i felt i accomplished something fun and new.

Thoughts?

Very thin layer of asphalt in top of the concrete. Wonder if it will last.

Where to safely park E-cargo bike downtown so I can commute from distance?

Hi! I'm moving to Ottawa and brining my cargo bike (Tern GSD). I'll be working in an office downtown (Bank & Gloucester) and want to use it to commute but my office doesn't have secure parking. Does anybody else do this? I need to get a few kids to school on route and I'm coming from reasonably far out so "buying a cheap bike" probably not going to work for me.

These are my ideas. I don't love any of them:

  1. Park at City Hall? then I’ve still got a bit of a walk on either end….
  2. Rent a bike spot at garage from someone with a condo downtown? (anyone done this?)
  3. Secure public bike parking lockers, I see a few spots that could work, but not even sure it would fit inside, also the cost isn’t great if I’m doing it daily. Has any used them?
    1. 210 Gloucester Street,
    2. 141 Clarence Street
  4. Buy insurance, leave a huge chain lock downtown on a pole, take the battery out when I arrive and hope for the best?
  5. Any other options? Would love to hear what you do, especially if you roll with a cargo-bike.
