Adding Bluetooth to a cheap digital indicator.

First project like this.

Picked the AI flag because the second image was wholesale made by the robots, I'm not that gifted a graphics designer.

So I want a Bluetooth digital indicator for work, the boss is pretty loose on what we can get tool wise, but a $700 price tag is beyond what he's comfortable with. He was willing to spring for the DIY option though, and since I have an unhealthy amount of unrealistic confidence I decided to do it.

Digital indicator is the cheapest 1 inch travel version with an output port. I suspect the manufacturer knows people are going to hack it as the supposed data cable for it goes up to $200-400, wildly exceeding the cost of the $35-50 indicator.

I got the cheapest ESP32s that ran USB C and cheapest digital indicator (Clockwise Tools) off Amazon to figure out the idea.

After a couple evenings fiddling about I've got it mostly worked out. Clock and data signals are negative relative to ground so they need to have NPN transistors to not smoke the board.

The code is well outside of my wheelhouse though, so I leaned heavily on an AI to get it written I'm not going to post it here begging for help, it works on the Hosyond ESP32 DevKit, I'm pretty sure I can eventually muddle through and get it to work on the XIAO C3. There's a free app called Touch DRO that can understand the input and calibrate to the indicator regardless of how many steps per inch. There was some weirdness with how Clockwise tools handles output of +/- signals and also sends different input for metric and inches.

One of the biggest issues I saw during my brief interaction with a Motionics unit my boss had was the refresh rate. It looked like it was running at about 2-4Hz, which is not terrible, but I know it can hit a MUCH higher refresh rate. I've got mine running at 10Hz and can probably go higher. Don't have much reason to though, 10 updates a second should be more than enough for human inputs.

Future plan

So the AI image shows where I'm going to go, I've got those boards and batteries on order. I'll be 3d printing a back enclosure for the battery and ESP32. The AI didn't quite understand everything and keeps wanting to connect the board to power through the port RS232, which won't work. I'll be running the power for the indicator off one of the other GPIOs on the board since it won't exceed the ratings on it. The wire it keeps wanting to use is normally the (+) power wire on micro USB cables.

It looks like the board in the indicator has a lot of blank and unused space out towards the rim, I'm going to drill through a couple spots to allow me to solder wires on to the battery terminals and directly into the clock and data pins of the RS232 port. That will allow me to pass through the back plate and into the XIAO. I've got one unit that is there for stupid ideas and this idea seems perfectly stupid and ripe for such a thing.

If you have any ideas what the red -1.5v wire in the 4 wire RS232 is doing, let me know. I put it on the scope and there's no signal there, just a solid reference voltage.

Second, while TouchDRO works fine, I want a single axis dedicated app to do the job. All of the existing Bluetooth indicators have one, sure, but they also have stuff that stops them working with anything else, both Motionics and Mitutoyo won't read anything but their indicators. Right now I'm starting to look at developing the thing and getting very intimidated (flutter dev space), if anyone has alternatives that work with BLE for Android, I'd be interested.

If you really want to develop an app for this idea? I'll ship you an indicator to play with once the XIAOs and batteries show up. I have no realistic expectation of folks taking me up on this, but if you do, I'll make good.

I'm happy to talk about the code too, since it's wholesale AI with minimal me I'm not going to post it up unless folks are interested.

Blutooth Audio Compression. Flac directly to Aptx

I use audio flac on my smartphone, but I need a lot of memory. I can convert into Mp3 or other lossy format. But in this case i have double compression, Wav(flac) to Mp3 to Aptx(or other standard)

Can I convert my wave file into an native Bluetooth format like Aptx or other standard, and bypass the Bluetooth conversion?

How are identical Bluetooth devices distinguished during repair?

I'm curious about how manufacturers identify individual Bluetooth headsets and other consumer electronics during service or warranty inspections.

If two units of the same model look identical and don't have a visible serial number, how do service technicians distinguish one from another? Do they use an internal serial number, Bluetooth MAC address, firmware ID, or other unique hardware identifier? Can these identifiers be read using diagnostic software through the USB port?

I'd appreciate insights from electronics repair technicians or anyone with experience servicing these devices.

Secure Connections

Was thinking earlier that our bluetooth connections on our devices are extremely vunerable. I've never really heard anyone saying to turn off your bluetooth connection when not in use.

webcam that can be used with bluetooth?

to explain: i am disabled, and can no longer work. the way my PC is set up, it essentially is attached to my TV, which is a few feet from the end of my bed. naturally, if i attached a webcam of some sort to the top of that TV, i would be extremely far away and would not be very visible, making it moot in point to bother with.

i'm wondering if there's something i can do to upgrade beyond just taking my medical appointments through my phone camera (which overheats really bad due to age) such as some kind of bluetooth camera i can have in my bed. do you have any ideas of something i could accomplish like that?

i am naturally working within budget, aka "broke", so i can't go spending a whole lot of money on anything. it needs to work and that's about it. i have a nice headset that can be used for audio and mic instead, so i'm not really worried about quality of audio/mic; i just need to be able to be seen without wires being strung across my bed crazy style.

it would make things much, much easier for me, as not only is my phone no longer up to the task of zoom calls (or much of anything...) anymore, but i struggle to hold it up sometimes due to my disability worsening and making me sicker recently. and truthfully, i want to be able to conserve what energy i have for being able to sit up and hold things and whatnot for things i actually like doing, or else i'll be absolutely miserable... but if i can't accomplish that, it's understandable; a guy can dream though, you know?

anyway, please let me know if any of you have any ideas. thank you so much. 💖

Follow up from my other post…

I’m at my wits end. I’ve done everything I can possibly do to try and fix this Bluetooth problem and nothing. Absolutely nothing has worked.

Name a possible solution and I’ve probably done it. I have no idea what it could possibly be. No idea why it would recognize everything like normal, and then out of nowhere act like it doesn’t have Bluetooth capabilities.

Problem with my earphones

I have Bluetooth earphones, more precisely these are Moondrop collab earphones with Honkai Star Rail character Robin.

Yesterday they were working just fine, but today only one earphone out of 2 is working, but the other one? It's not.

I had a theory that maybe it's because only one earphone properly charged but, that doesn't seem to be the case. I tried to look through the Moondrop app (equalizer) and apparently it sees both??? Idk how these apps work

My brother told me that it's probably an age thing, but idk

Switch connection manually?

Not sure why this is still so hard, but I need to switch between devices my headphones are paired to without having to log in to the old device to turn off that connection.

My newborn is asleep on my chest, in the bedroom. I have my phone on me and my headphones are on and in my ears. But the headphones are still connected to my laptop, which I switched to yesterday.

How do I get my headphones connected to my phone without getting up to go to my computer and waking up my newborn in the process?

This among a myriad other reasons why one/I would want the ability to cycle through available connections and/or make my headphones drop the current connection and/or never auto connect to some devices as I decide.

ETA: Newborn woke up, finally. By the time this is made available I wouldn't be surprised if he was already through elementary. But one can hope.

I have no idea what to do.

I have a pair of Bluetooth headphones that I purchased to use with my computer because my computer doesn’t have speakers.

Everything was fine until today. They disconnected from the computer, and now the computer says ‘couldn’t connect’ when I click ‘add a device’ and then ‘Bluetooth’.

Bluetooth fails to connect on new build (Tried TP- Link USB Dongle and Intel AX210 PCIe card same error)

Hey everyone

I am stuck in a frustrating Bluetooth loop and really need some fresh help on this. My Bluetooth can scan and discover every device around (headphones, controller, phone), but when I click Connect, it's stuck on Connecting... for a few seconds and then fails, saying "Try connecting your device again."

This has happened across two completely different hardware devices with the exact same failures.

My PC Specs: (Built it recently using mostly second-hand parts)

  • CPU: Intel i5-14600KF
  • Motherboard: ASRock B760M-HDV/M.2 D4
  • OS: Windows 11

What I've Tried:

  1. USB Dongle: I started out using a TP-Link USB Bluetooth dongle. It would detect devices perfectly, but always failed on the actual pairing/handshake. I assumed it was a faulty dongle and returned it.
  2. The Internal PCIe: I bought an Intel AX210 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth M.2 card and installed it directly into my motherboard's M.2_WIFI slot.
    • The Wi-Fi works great, and the speeds are as expected.
    • The Bluetooth still has the exact same issue: it scans and finds my headphones, phone, Xbox controller, but refuses to pair or complete the connection.
  3. Drivers: I fully uninstalled the old TP-Link drivers. In Device Manager, I enabled "Show hidden devices" and cleaned all ghost Bluetooth adapters, and left only the Intel Wireless Bluetooth driver.
  4. Windows Services: In services, I made sure that the Bluetooth Support Service is running, forced a restart on it, and ensured its startup type is set to Automatic.
  5. Interference: I unplugged my external USB drives and peripherals to but the handshake still fails.

Since the issue is identically the same for a USB dongle and the Intel PCIe chip, it feels like it's a Windows problem.

Has anyone had a similar problem? Any registry fixes or motherboard settings I might have missed?

Would really appreciate any help

Bose A30 Bluetooth issue

Hi, I just used the Bluetooth feature on my Bose a30s and it worked well. Now, the Bluetooth light won’t even turn on. The batteries are fresh alkaline, and I even tried other batteries. I tried resetting holding the Bluetooth button and the - volumn button but nothing seems to work. This headset is still under warranty, but I’d rather not ship it off and be without a headset. Anybody else have this issue? What is the fix? I find it hard to believe it’s anything serious as I just used the Bluetooth function a couple of minutes ago. Please advise.
