my very first project

​Hi everyone!

​About three months ago, I decided to take on my very first project designing a mechanism and working with a servo motor entirely on my own. It was a custom interactive build made as a gift for my 7-year-old niece!

​Since it needed to be both mechanically functional and safe/durable for a child, I focused heavily on structural engineering:

​Used internal bamboo ribs to keep the structure lightweight for the motor while preventing warping.

​Reinforced mechanical joints and hinges with epoxy adhesive and safety-capped screws to withstand motor stress and vibration.

​Sealed the entire structure with epoxy resin for durability and moisture resistance.

​I’d love to get your thoughts on the mechanical layout or any tips for future servo-driven builds!

I built a bimetallic wire tree desk organizer using galvanized steel and copper wire—and solved a tricky soldering problem!

Hey everyone! As an engineering student, I love looking at everyday materials differently and solving structural challenges.

For this project, I wanted to build a sturdy desk organizer tree from scratch using basic workshop materials: 18-gauge galvanized steel wire for the skeleton and recycled electrical copper wire for the details.

One of the main challenges was that standard tin solder doesn't hold directly onto galvanized steel due to the zinc coating. To bypass this, I used a mechanical bimetallic approach—wrapping the joints tightly with copper wire and creating clean terminal loops for hanging attachments.

The Process: Twisted multiple strands for a solid, stable tripod base and core branches, then used precision loop-forming and copper wraps for structural strength.

The Tools: Pliers, wire cutters, a soldering iron, and tin solder.

It really pops against a dark background, highlighting the silver and copper contrast. Let me know what you think of this structural wirework!

I built a smartphone-controlled boat to learn new skills... and the river claimed it as a trophy!

I’m a mechanical engineering student and I run a YouTube channel called She Builds where I work on DIY robotics and engineering projects.

I recently decided to convert a standard RC toy boat into a smartphone-controlled machine using an Arduino and a Bluetooth module. It was a great project to work on, but I learned a very important (and expensive!) engineering lesson the hard way: never underestimate the power of a river's current versus your motor's torque.

Spoiler: My boat didn't survive the maiden voyage—the river won this round! 😅

I’m sharing my project journey, the full Arduino code, the wiring schematic, and the app I used in case you want to build your own version (and hopefully keep it safe!).
