Have you ever switched BJJ gyms because of one person?

Has anyone had a teammate, coach, or higher belt that you just didn’t get along with, and it eventually made you leave the gym?

Was it one specific incident, ongoing tension, disrespect, arguments, unsafe rolling, personality conflict, etc.?

Did you try talking it out first, just avoid the person, or decide it wasn’t worth dealing with and switch gyms?
If you left, do you think you made the right decision?

How can I improve in Jiu-Jitsu?

I'm a white belt, I've been one for 6 months already, and I want to learn and reinforce the basic concepts and improve my guard passing. Do you have any guides or videos to recommend, please?

Why did you switch BJJ gyms or why are you thinking about switching?

For anyone who has switched gyms, what was the main reason you finally decided to leave?

And for people who have thought about switching but haven’t, what’s keeping you at your current gym?

Was it coaching, training partners, schedule, gym culture, personal conflict, cost, location, competition goals, or something else?

Also curious if anyone had a personal conflict with a coach, black belt, or teammate that made them seriously consider leaving. Did you end up staying or switching, and do you think you made the right decision?

Tips to be more relaxed

Hi guys! I have now trained No-Gi bjj about 8 months and right now my goal is to learn and focus on being more relaxed when rolling. I am currently always very stiff and people say that to me. So is there some tips how I could work on this? Breathing is the key but if there is any other tips/tricks, I am happy to hear

When is it safe to return to BJJ after ringworm?

Good morning, everyone. I unfortunately caught the dreaded ringworm a little under two weeks ago. I started OTC treatment right away, and the swelling, itchiness, and raised borders are completely gone. Obviously, I’ve completely avoided training since I noticed it.

When do y’all think it’s safe for others for me to return to training? I’ve attached two pictures: one from today and one from the day I started treatment.

Chess rating compared to BJJ belt

So I’ve been playing chess for years now and I have a peak rating of 2070 rapid and 1985 blitz on chess.com.

I recently have been going to Brazilian jujitsu classes and falling in love with it! Especially the belt system.

Anyone familiar with BJJ belts and have an idea of a break down ? I’m very curious, what belt do you think equals to the equivalent chess rating ?

Here’s what I was thinking

White - > 1000

Blue - 1001-1500

Purple - 1501 - 1900

Brown - 1901 - 2300

Black - 2300 +

I’m going by chess.com ratings not OTB so I know it’s different.

What do you guys think ?

Moves to practice while waiting for ACL to heal

Was going to get into BJJ, but tore my ACL in January. Had surgery in April. Still not cleared for wrestling or twisting motions, but wanted to know if there are moves i can start practicing that don't involve a lot of torque to the knees.

Okay, so what just happened?

Hi everyone. I’m a beginner at BJJ, and a few days ago I was rolling with a classmate. I was on top in mount, and while he was trying to sweep me, I resisted and suddenly felt a sharp pain in my shoulder. It felt like the bone moved out of place and immediately went back in. The pain was bearable, so I rested for a couple minutes and tried another round, but the exact same thing happened again.

I’m pretty sure I’m doing something wrong when defending the sweep and putting too much stress on my shoulder. Any idea what could have happened or what I might be doing wrong?

Advice on BJJ as a secondary sport/exercise

Hey everyone,

There’s a brand new BJJ gym that opened down the road from me and I’m curious about trying it out (definitely going to do the free class to see). I have been competing in strongman competitions for the last 15 years and want to continue to do so. I figured BJJ could be a fun way to increase my conditioning AND learn a new skill at the same time.

My plan if I end up liking that class is to train 2x a week BJJ and cut lifting back from 4x a week to 3x a week.

Would BJJ completely screw me over for strongman competitions? Is the injury rate super high?

Thanks for any insight you all can provide!

EDIT: Thanks for the advice everyone! I officially signed up for my free class for Wednesday night!

Is it normal that the coach doesn't check people while rolling?

Hi, I am coming from a striking background, where 2 coaches look at the class while sparring to correct technique and give feedback and most important they check that nobody goes too hard and even stop you if they see that happening.

I've noticed that in bjj our coach (Brown belt) rolls as well during sparring and there is nobody supervising or looking at people's rolling. Is that normal or just my gym?

¿O esperar?

Should I give another gym a shot or just quit?

Used to do muay thai and that was lots of fun and I wanted to try some bjj, but bjj is genuinely so boring for me in comparison.Muay Thai gym the vibe was much better as well, like idk man it's not more personal it's just much more like everyone's got each others back vibe and even if you're not progressing and are in the plateauing stage, it still feels like you're doing something, but with bjj bro I'm genuinely feeling nothing. I just cannot care for some reason, and there's a Gracie barra really close to me which is where I go out of convenience, but omds the curriculum is so slow and there's no way I'm just gonna be practising the same thing for one week and then I can do something new next week, I genuinely feel like I'm getting nothing done with how my gym approaches it.
