Beginner - What do I do during rolling sessions?

Hello everyday. I am on day two of my training and I still don’t know anything. I understand during rolling people are trying to submit or get ground control. My question is, what am I supposed to do as somebody who doesn’t know what they’re doing? How can I submit if I don’t know any submissions? How can I get back/ground control if I dont know how? How can I escape submissions or strong holds if I dont know how to?

Please help.

BJJ is fucking useless for the streets

The number 1 rule of street fighting is to be always on your feet because god knows what might happen.

They might pull out a knife
Their friends might come and gang up on you
etc

When that happens, before you can get up and run away, they’re already fucking up yo ass😭✌🏻

You need to always be on your feet so you can run.

The number 1 best martial art is sprinting/running

I know im not wrong and if someone in the comments tell me otherwise, you know they’re just defending their ego🤣

BJJ Gi for beginners price point, how much does it actually matter at white belt?

About two months in on BJJ and the gym gave me a loaner for the first few weeks which was fine but I want my own. I've been looking online and the price range is kind of wild, anywhere from $60 to $200+ and I can't figure out what the actual difference is at my level. I've read the "just get a cheap one because you might quit" argument and I get it but I've also read the "buy once, cry once" argument and I also get that. Not sure which one is smarter here.

How much does weave type actually matter right now? Is a single weave going to fall apart faster or is that more relevant at higher levels where you're washing it more often?

I know there's a megathread but I felt like this was specific enough to warrant its own post. Happy to be redirected if not.

Ive just cleared a recent ringworm bout a few weeks ago using clotrimazole, i went back to training a week ago and ive got it again but its now widespread. Any unhinged recommendations to speed up the healing process?

Should I go to heavier division or to jump down from M2 to adults?

Hi people,

Sorry for bothering with dumb question, I would like to know your opinions and maybe experience, because I am facing such “issue” for the first time.

On upcoming IBJJF event there is no one in my age and weight category (light, M2).
I basically can see two options:

  1. To go up to Middleweight
  2. To go down from Masters 2 to adults.

I am a bit anxious about Middle weight because if some spine issues in the past (since then I am avoiding rolling people 80kg+), but mostly because of my gameplan is built around ankle pick and/or collar drag which I didn’t have chance to test in heavier people and, to be honest, I hardly imagine I can pull it off…

But at the same time going to hungry adult brown belts who can happen twice younger than me also doesn’t sound as a smart decision 😅

So the questions are:
Did you have this experience before and how it did work out?
What would you do in my shoes?)

Thank you all and have a great day!

Osss🤙

Cross-training/Drop-ins: Do you prefer classes, Open Mats, or a mix of both?

I’m in my late 20s and about 2.5 years into my journey (Blue Belt). I have a solid home gym, but I work 45 minutes away and just bought a pack of passes at a gym near my office to keep my volume up.
For those of you who "gym hop" or cross-train: do you usually drop in for a full class, or do you stick to Open Mats? I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons.
Structured classes give me new perspectives, but Open Mats are great for just getting rounds in.
Also, since I'm using drop-in passes, do you think it's better to:

  1. Stick with one secondary gym to build rapport and learn their system?
  2. Rotate through different gyms to see as many different styles and body types as possible?
  3. Lastly, how often should I be dropping in without it
  4. "ruining" or conflicting with the curriculum I'm learning at my home gym? What's your go-to strategy for staying sharp at a second location?

Weird question regarding visiting a gym in Brazil.

So I decided to pick up BJJ as a 52 year old about 2 1/2 months ago. I train through a gym with an owner that came up through Carlson Gracie.
Last night, my wife informed me she has an opportunity to go to Brazil through work in August.
Would it be wise to try to train in Brazil having basically minimal knowledge or would I just be too far out of place as a 2 stripe white belt at best?
